The Voice of Mukesh #16
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
This delightful and endearing sound of a heart that is finding love for the first time, took me by surprise. And the song seems to be really rare, in that I am not able to locate any published version online so far.

The film is ‘Do Dil’ from 1947. The film is produced under the banner of Jamuna Productions, Bombay, and is directed by the renowned veteran actor / producer / director Jagdish Sethi. The list of artists in this film includes Suraiyyaa, Motilal, Karan Dewan, Badri Prasad, Gulab, Ram Singh, Shabnam, Baburao, Khalil, Sudhir etc. The music is composed by Pt. Gobindram. There are eleven songs in this film, all coming from the pen of DN Madhok.

Of these 11 songs, Mukesh got to contribute his voice to six of them. Three of them as solo song, and three as duets (two with Suraiyya, and one with Rajkumari). It is interesting to note that Rafi Sb also sang in this film, but just one solo song. Suraiyyaa and Mukesh clearly dominated the signing voices in this film.

Four songs of this film are already posted on this blog. These include two Mukesh songs also. Both are Suraiyyaa-Mukesh duets – “Kaaghaz Ki Meri Naao.
. .”
, and “Maati Ka But Bhaa Gayaa”.

So now we are adding the first of the three solo songs by Mukesh. This is a very lovely sound. The composition is somewhat uncharacteristic and yet, very endearing. The loveliness of this song took me by surprise. The poet is telling about the heart that now seems to be under the spell of someone. Just the words “Jiyaa Beimaan”, and its rendering, is enough to set the tone and the expectations about this song. The heart is insincere, it is deceitful , it is playing truant to the one who owns it, and it has allowed itself to be captured in enchantment of another. And there is an imploring plea for the stealer of the heart, to come and sit in “nainon ki naao” for a “dil ke panghat ki sair” – oh such a lovely play on words. The words, the melody, and of course the voice of Mukesh, make this a very special song.

An out and out winner. And although I have no clues as to the on screen performance, my guess is that this may have been picturized on Motilal. Listen to this wonderful find, obscure and unavailable for long. And enjoy.

jiyaa beimaan, bas mein paraaye hai
ghadi ghadi bhar bhar aaye hai

Ah this deceitful
This two timing heart
It has come under the spell
Of another, an unfamiliar stranger
Every moment, every breath
It brims up (with emotions, thinking of her)

meethe meethe bol, bol bol ke jiyaa ko bas mein kiya
waah re mere mann baawre, sukh de ke dukh liyaa
ab pal pal karey haay haaye hai

With words like honey
Spoken so sweetly
My heart, it was pilfered away from me
Oh what a crazy, silly heart you be
Giving up your comforts and pleasure
For the pain and pining in exchange
And now
Every moment
Is a whimper of aching anguish

nain ki naao banaaun, tumko bithaaun main
dil ke panghat ki sair karaaun main
aao bhi chale bhi aao, haaye jiyaa jaaye hai

Allow me
To craft a ferry with my eyes
And thence to invite you
For a beautiful sail
Around the ‘panghat’ of heart
I beseech you
O please come
My heart, it is just about to go away from me

(NOTE: the literal meaning of ‘panghat’ is the well from where the ladies in a village would draw water for domestic use. The word is made from two words – ‘pan’ and ‘ghat’. ‘pan’ is short for ‘paani’ or water. ‘ghat’ is short for ‘ghadaa’, the earthen vessel in which water is stored. It is traditional that the village well, ‘panghat’, used to be the place of romance. Every village belle, would come there sometime during the day, to draw water for her home. And so, ‘panghat’ becomes one the possible meeting places for romancing hearts. This tradition is very strongly captured and showcased in romantic poetry and prose of this land, from across the ages. It is also a central theme in the pastimes of Lord Krishna, immortalized in Hindi films through songs like “Mohey Panghat Pe Nandlal Chhed Gayo Re”. )

Atulji,
In the tags the present Mukesh number is linked to “Do Phool” 1958 and NOT to “Do Dil” 1947. Kindly correct the typo error.

Sudhirji,
Many thanks for unearthing such great and rare numbers.
