“Manoranjan” (1974) was an Eagle Films production. It was produced by F C Mehra and directed by Shammi Kapoor. The movie had Zeenat Aman, Sanjeev Kumar, Dev Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Faryal, Madan Puri, Paintal, Asit Sen, Mac Mohan, Agha etc in it.
This movie was inspired from “Irma La Douce” (1963), an Oscar winning comedy movie. Here is a succinct, to the point account of “Irma La Douce” from IMDB.
Naive, by the book French police officer Nester Patou, is transferred to the Red Light district. Upon witnessing what must be a brothel, he calls the station and organizes a raid, transporting all the ‘ladies’ to the jail. This unfortunately disrupts the well organized system of the police and the Pimps union. Not to mention inadvertently netting his station superior at the brothel. Fired, he goes to a bar to drink, is befriended by Irma, beats up her pimp, and finds he is now Irma’s new pimp. Nester’s doesn’t like the thought of his girl seeing other men, so comes up with a plan.
“Manoranjan” (1974) was a faithful copy of “Irma La Douce”, with Sanjeev Kumar playing the naive and upright Constable Ratan ‘Sheru’ who gets posted in the red light area of the town where he falls in love with Zeenat Aman, who plays a prostitute called Nisha.
Unlike most Hindi movies, the prostitutes of this movie are quite happy with their lot and they do not sing serious mujra songs. When constable Ratan Sheru rounds the up, the prostitutes sing a song. The song is sung by three Mangeshkar sisters, viz Lata, Asha Bhonsle and Usha Mangeshkar. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.
The lyrics by Anand Bakshi are quite innovative indeed. In Hindi language, “sasuraal” is a term used for police custody as far as criminals are concerned. Here the ladies describe themselves as “brides”, police custody as their “maika” (parents place),the police van as their “doli” and police siren as “Shehnaayi”. Quite creative and fun lyrics indeed.
The song is lip synced by Zeenat Aman, Shefali, Fariyal, Sabeena and Kitty, while Sanjeev Kumar is also present in the picturisation.
