This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
Bengal has contributed significantly to Hindi Film Industry. Actors, actresses, directors, producers, Singers ,music directors etc from Bengal have enriched the Hindi films in all major categories.
As far as Music is concerned, besides Singers like Geeta Dutt,HEmant Kumar, Kishore Kumar etc, Bombay had many Music Directors who tried their hands with music in Hindi films since the 30s.
Some of the names of Bengali Music Directors are R C Boral, Punkaj Mullick, Timir Baran, Anupam Ghatak, K C Dey, Manna Dey, Anil Biswas, Ashok Ghosh, Ramchandra Pal, Gyan Dutt, Pannalal Ghosh, Kamal Dasgupta, S K Pal, Ravishanker, Ram Ganguly, S D Burman, Jamal Sen, Hemant kumar, Salil Chaudhari, Arunkumar Mukherjee, Bipin Dutta, Robin Banerjee, Kishore Kumar, R D Burman, Kanu Roy, Shyamal Mitra, Manas Mukherjee, Bappi Lahiri etc.
Some of the less known Bengali Music Directors were, Radhacharan Bhattacharya, N R Bhattacharya, M K Bhattacharya, Shoolpani Mukherjee, S P Mukherjee, V V Ganguly, Niren Lahiri, A C Viswas, Bhishmadev Chatterjee, Sushant Banerjee, Sailesh Mukherjee, Robin Chatterjee, Himanshu Dutt, D C Dutt, Hiren Bose, Subal Dasgupta, Gyanprakash Ghosh and many many more…
However, four major Composers ruled the HFM from late 30s to 80s.
Two of them are from East Bengal-S D Burman and Anil Biswas and two are from West Bengal- Hemant Kumar and Salil Chaudhari.
Except S D Burman, all the other three had hard time trying to reach the top the top, while Burman da stayed at the top almost throughout his career.
Born into a Royal family of Tripura in East Bengal,he learnt music first from his father-a Dhrupad singer and a sitar player himself. During 25 to 30 years of age he trained with K C Dey, Baishnav Chatopadhyaya, K B Khan,Allauddin Khan and Kazi Nazrul Islam.
His career started from 1932 at AIR Calcutta and same year he cut his first record also. While in Calcutta, he fell in love with his student Meera Dasgupta and they decided to marry. However she not being from a Royal lineage, there was opposition to their marriage. To marry her,Burman da had to severe ties with his family and forgo all inheritance. But before that only, he had built a big House in Calcutta which remained with him throughout his life.
On a call from Shashdhar Mukherjee, he arrived at Bombay and gave music to Filmistan’s “Shikar” and “Aath Din” in 1946.After a short gap, he started with a bang with “Mashaal” in 1951 and then there was no looking back.
Burman da was responsible for the First Hits of several Singers-
Geeta Dutt’s career took off after songs of ‘Do Bhai’, Manna Dey’s career flowered after ‘ Upar gagan vishal’ from Mashal, Hemant da succeeded as a singer only after he sang-‘ ye raat ye chaandni phir kahaan’ from Jaal, Kishore Kumar got his first hit with Bahar-‘ Huzur aapka, kasoor aapka’ and his second and successful innings as a playback singer with the Aradhana song-‘ o meri sapnon ki Rani..’.
S D Burman was famous for his white Kurta, eating Paan and his quaint Hindi pronunciation, like LOTA for Lata and MOOSAFEER for Musafir ( wahan kaun hai tera, moosafeer). Dada loved Tennis, Football and Music. Every morning he used to go for a morning walk at 4 a.m.. The local police on rounds luckily knew him, so he was never detained ! he had said that he got inspiration for many songs early in the morning.
His love for eating Paan was also legendary. One day a Producer came to him and took Dada to eat Paan. They ate Paan and sat in the car. The producer wanted Dada to give music to his film. He was talking so much and asking so many questions, that the irritated Dada got down at the next Traffic signal and said,” Paan bhi nahin khaane deta hai,Jao nahin karega tumhaara film ” and he walked away !!
Dada borrowed heavily from North -East folk music and his own Bangla songs to make Hindi songs. Further,as if contrary to his fame of originality, many of his popular songs were based on stolen tunes from west-sorry,they were ‘inspired’. Some examples are-
1. Munimji song- Jeevan ke safar mein raahi….copied from mexican hat Dance.
2. Solva Saal song-Ye bhi koi roothne ka……based on Arab Feast(Ya Gozayel)
3. Taxi Driver song- Chahe koi khush ho chaahe……copied from Taranella
4. Chalti ka naam gaadi songs- Ek ladki bheegi bhaagi si…..based on Sixteen tons
5. hum thhe wo thhi…..based on Watermilon song
songs from Jewel Thief, Insaan jaag utha, Sagina etc…… it is a very long list.
Dada never depended on any single singer, that is why when there was a tiff with lata in 1957 for Sitaron se aagey song, and Lata was not used by him till 1963, he made do with Asha Bhosale and gave equally good songs.
Sometimes Dada behaved very strangely.
Manna Dey recalls, ” One morning Dada called me.I went to him. he sang a Tune and asked my opinion. I said it was OK. he asked me to go away. Same day evening he called me again. This time he sang another Tune and asked my opinion. I said it was excellent. he said ” come from tomorrow for rehearsals.” I did rehearsals for that song for 7 days. Then Dada came and told me ,” Now you know how I want this song exactly. Now you teach Mohd. Rafi. I want to record this song from him !” tell me,how must have I felt ? ”
S D Burman sang 15 songs in Hindi Films. He sang 25 Hindi NFS and over 130 Bangla NFS( Most were copied in Hindi films). Most of his NFS came between 1955 to 1965.
Today we will enjoy one of his famous NFS Bhajan recorded in 1960. This song was so popular in those days that as per one report, this NFS was played in the Intervals of films, in every Theatre in Haridwar !
Here is the song.

Arunji,
A wonderful NFS by S D Burman. The write up, with lots of information and trivias about SDB was interesting. I liked both the write-up and the song. Thanks for the same.
One minor correction. I think Jamal Sen was from Rajasthan and not Bengal.

Venkataraman ji,
Thanks for your comments.
Jamal Sen was a Bengali settled in Rajasthan, that is why he qualified for the list position. There is no SEN as a surname in Rajasthan. His son Shambhu sen and Shambhu’s sons never stayed in Rajasthan. They stayed in Bombay only.

Dear Arun,
I also felt that Jamal Sen was from Bengal because of the suffix to his name ‘Sen’ and also his association with AIR, Calcutta. Only a few days back, I came to know as per the article of Nalin Shah appeared on Cineplot that his forefathers belonged to Sujangadh in Rajasthan. kamath ji,
Thanks for your information. I read this article.I also came across another article of Nalin Bhai,in which also he has said almost the same thing. Now it is clear that Jamal Sen was from Rajasthan only.
My information had the basis of quotations from Pankaj Raag’s book on MDs. Shows, how undependable or ‘half-truths’ are these books too !
Venakataraman ji,
I take back my words and agree with you, kamath ji and Nalin ji that jamal Sen was basically from Rajasthan.
Regret the error.
