Aaye aaye re nanhe munne raaja ko nindiyaa sulaaye

Posted on: May 22, 2013

This article is written by Pamir Harvey, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This is the last song of Doosri Sita (1974). Quite interesting to see that the film has basically only three songs. Since one of them has three versions, a person watching the film would have the effect of listening to five songs.

This was the second collaboration of Gulzar and Pancham, the first being “Parichay” (1972).

This song is sung by a supporting actress in a jail. Women’s Jail makes us feel more sympathy towards the inmates than the men’s jail. Surely there are also hardened criminals there, but many are desolate cases, where the inmates are more the victims rather than criminals of the society. This is the feeling, which this song also conveys.

For dramatic purposes, the song is interrupted mid-last stanza in the movie. The audio version doesn’t leave it in a limbo and ends the song properly. Thus I have provided both versions here.

Song-Aaye aaye re nanhe munne raja ko nindiya sulaaye(Doosri Sita)(1974) Singer- Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

aaye
aaye re
nanhe munne raja ko nindiyaa sulaaye
aaye
aaye re
nanhe munne raja ko nindiyaa sulaaye
bhole bhaali
ankhiyon pe
nindiyaa ki
bindiyaa si ho o
sapne sajaaye re
nanhe munne raja ko nindiyaa sulaaye

maa ke godi se tujhko
kaash pariyaan le jaaye
aur dene ko kyaa hai
jhoothi moothi duwaayen
koi aaye
le jaaye ae ae ae
koi aaye
le jaaye
o o
aaye
aaye re
nanhe munne raja ko nindiyaa sulaaye

jaa jahaan koi teraa
aur paraayaa na hogaa
(weeps)
mere paapon kaa
mere paapon kaa tujhpar
ye saaya na hogaa
koi aaye

(the song is interrupted in the film at this point, in audio version it continues ahead)

le jaaye
koi aaye
le jaaye
o o
aaye
aaye re
nanhe munne raja ko nindiyaa sulaaye
aaye aaye re

Atulji, this song reminds me of the two lovely songs from ‘Bandhini’. Both are sung by inmates of a women’s jail. One of them is , “O panchi pyari…” and the other is the sad, “Ab ke baras bhej bhaiyya ko babul…”

Funny that you mention that! It reminded me too of those two songs. But I’m sure there are more Hindi film songs, which are sung by inmates of a women’s jail.

Nice song.

Jail songs are kind of depressing though.
