In Mukti (1977), Shashi Kapoor and Vidya Sinha play a happily married couple, till he is framed for murder and thus gets capital punishment. Thinking that he is dead she relocates to Bombay, where she meets the local goon, who helps the lonely “widow” and her daughter settle down. This other man is played by Sanjeev Kumar. In this song he seems to be drinking so that he can feel brave enough to admit his love to his adored one.
The tune of this song has a long history. Seeing Pancham’s dedication and talent during the making of Pyaasa, Guru Dutt assigned to him his next venture, Raaz. As it happens so often, the film got shelved. One song was recorded with the voices of Geeta Dutt and Hemant Kumar based on the signature tune of Limelight (1952), which remained unreleased. Pancham would use this tune thirteen years later in a somewhat modified form for Bombay to Goa (1971). The song was tum meri zindagi me. This song though recorded wasn’t included in the film. This tune was reborn in the form of this song, main jo chalaa pi kar, again. But this would not be its last avatar. Exactly the same tune from Bombay to Goa would be used for the Bengali movie Debota (1991) for the song ki kore janle tumi.
The song is filmed on Sanjeev Kumar and Prema Narayan. Deven Verma is also to be seen.

Research? Just read R. D. Burman’s biography and the plot is from imdb and some bollywoodisque brain-work!
