Ik aas badhaaye jaati hai

Posted on: July 16, 2013

This article is written by Bharat Upadhyay, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a new contributor to this blog.

“Lahore” (1949) was based on the aftermath of India’s partition following independence. This movie was a Jaimini Dewan production and it was directed by M L Anand. The movie had Karan Dewan, Nargis, Om Prakash, Randhir, Balakram, Ram Avtaar etc in it.

The name of the MD under the song is not a miss-print.

Harminder Singh ‘Hamraz’ in his ‘Geetkosh’ has mentioned ‘Shyam Sunder’ as the Music Director for all the songs. Even the EP produced by ‘HMV’ mentions the same thing. But according to Shri Vishwas Nerurkar, who has compiled a volume called ‘Gandhar’ listing all the Hindi film songs of Lataji (1945-1989), all the four solos and two duets of Lataji in this film are composed by Vinod. I called him recently to check this before making this presentation. He confirmed that he had gone personally to the archives of ‘HMV’ and checked the original hand-written labels on those original song masters. This, I am sure is going to raise controversies, but I would rather go with Shri Nerurkar’ confirmation. (His E-mail address: vishwas.nerurkar@gmail.com)

The beautiful song has Lataji’s fresh voice of her beginning years, where her voice and singing style very much resembles her inspiration and in some way her ‘guru’ Noorjehan. I am sure that the pure music lovers would appreciate and love to listen to the ‘firat taan’ on the word ‘bandhaaye’, which she has majestically used.

Song- Ik aas bandhaaye jaati hai (Lahore) (1949) Singer– Lata, Lyrics- Rajinder Krishan, MD- Shyamsundar

Lyrics

Ik aas bandhaaye jaati hai
ik aas mitaaye jaati hai
ummeed ke rangeen jhoole mein
taqdeer jhulaaye jaati hai
taqdeer jhulaaye jaati hai

aabaad kiya tha jis dil ko,
kar daala phir barbaad usse
is tarha kiya ke gham ke siva
kuchh aur raha na yaad usse
jis dil mein pyaar basaaya tha aa aa
ab dard basaaye jaati hai
ab dard basaaye jaati hai
Ummeed ke rangeen jhoole mein
taqdeer jhulaaye jaati hai
taqdeer jhulaaye jaati hai

asha ki kachchi kaliyon ko
asha ki kachchi kaliyon ko
khilne se pehle been liya
ik geet jagaa kar hothon par
ik geet jagaa kar hothon par
gaane se pehle chheen liya
do roz jhula kar phoolon mein
kaanton mein rulaaye jaati hai
kaanton mein rulaaye jaati hai
ummeed ke rangeen jhoole mein
taqdeer jhulaaye jaati hai
taqdeer jhulaaye jaati hai

Bharatbhai,
Ye Prasaad ke liye dhanyawad….
Lataji must be 19 years old when this song was recorded.

Unless someone provides the photo copies of the said original records with original hand writings or HMV provides official confirmation, everything else is a hearsay in my opinion.

Bharat ji,
Thanks for this post and the song.
MD Shyamsunder was addicted to alcohol and during the making of Lahore,he and Lata ji had a dispute on the language that he used while under the influence of alcohol. She left the film(luckily she had already recorded the songs).Shyamsunder was then assisted by Vinod in completing the balance work.Lata did not sing for him for next 4 years till Alif laila-53. Unfortunately,Shyamsunder got sick so much that he died, during this film, due to jaundice and madan Mohan completed the balance work.
In those days due to brotherly feelings and a congenial atmosphere(free from cut throat competetion),in such cases the second MD never brought his name in the credits and the original name remained alone. (For example,C.Ramchandra had helped S D Burman for Shikari-1946,but only SDB’s name is mentioned everywhere).
In such situations,we all know, thru written documents about Vinod and Madan Mohan’s help.
I feel that when the assisting MD did not find it fit to mention his name anywhere, why should we do it here.
different people have different opinions and it is difficult to convince everybody-there is no need too.
Thanks once again.

Atul,

I would like to submit the following points regarding the music director of ‘Lahore’ (1949) :

1. In the credit titles of the film, Shyam Sundar has been accredited as music director. Irrespective of whatever is said now, one must give credit to the artist whose name appears in the title credit of the film. It may not be out of place to mention here that it is a well known fact that Anil Biswas composed music for ‘Basant’ (1942) but the credit as a music director in the film was given to Pannalal Ghosh for some reasons and that credit has been retained in our blog.

2. The point to ponder is that if HMV had the hand written labels of songs giving credit to Vinod as music director, why has HMV continued to give credit to Shyam Sundar on their LPs/EPs ?

3. If I remember correctly, I had read somewhere (probably I might have heard/read Lata’s interview) that Lata Mangeshkar had some misunderstanding with Shyam Sundar at the time of rehearsal/recording of the song of ‘Lahore’ and thereafter they were not on talking terms. This would indicate that Shyam Sundar was involved in composing songs for ‘Lahore’. Incidentally, I do not recall Lata Mangeshkar ever spoke about Vinod being associated with music composition of this film.
4. Both ‘Lahore’ and ‘Baazar’ went to floors in 1948 but released in 1949. In my view, both these films had typical Shyam Sundar type of music composition while Vinod’s music composition was close to that of Pandit Amarnath and Husnlal-Bhagatram.

My own guess is that since Lata Mangeshkar was not in talking terms with Shyam Sundar, probably, Vinod may have been roped in for rehearsing and recording the remaining songs of Lata Mangeshkar. Under the circumstances, probably the name of Vinod as the music director of this film may have been inadvertantly written by one of HMV’s staff present at the time of recording of songs.

Of course we have Lata Mangeshkar amidst us to throw lights on this issue if she is able to recall the events happened about 65 years ago.

Since the film’s credit title had given the name of music director as Shyam Sundar and neither HMV, nor Geet Kosh has changed the name of music director from Shyam Sundar to Vinod, I would submit that we may retained the name of ‘Shyam Sundar’ as music director in the blog for all the songs of this film until some substantive evidence comes to the light.

Atul ji,
What Sadanand ji has said is what I had also stated ,that let Shyamsunder’s name be ,as MD for all songs of Lahore.
I quote here what Dr. Surjit Singh ji has said about Lahore songs-

” 7. laahaur

A social starring nargis, karan diivaan and kuladiip
kaur was a musical hit by MD shyam sundar (for songs 3, 4,
6, 8 and 9) and vinod (for the rest). Lyrics are by
raajendra krishaN except for 2, which is written by aziiz
kashmiirii. This is another cassette I have worn out. I am
lucky to have songs 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9 and 10. The two duets
of lata with karan diivaan compare with the best duets of
any kind. Lata’s 3 solos that I have heard send me to nuur-
jahaanland. Mannaa De’s complaint asking where god is
probably brought god out from hiding.

duniyaa hamaare pyaar kii – lata, karan diivaan
sun lo sajan merii baat – lata, karan diivaan
ham jahaa.N me.n aa-e hai.n – karan diivaan
bahaare.n phir bhii aa-e.ngii – lata
TuuTe hu-e aramaano.n kii ik – lata
hamane sarakas me.n naukarii kar – durranii
ummiid ke rangii.n jhuule me.n – lata
duniyaa to yah kahatii hai insaan – manaa De, chorus
vahii rotaa hu-aa ik dil – karan diivaan
us dil kii qismat kyaa kahiye – lata ”

According to the above list of 5 songs of ‘VINOD’ , 3 are already posted on the Blog, with SHYAMSUNDER’s name as MD-
1. Duniya hamare pyar ki
2.Sun lo sajan meri baat and
3.Toote hue armanon ki..

In such a case why only the above posted song,i.e. ‘ Ik aas badhaye jaati Hai’ should be credited to Vinod ?

I still feel that we should go by what the film credits say about the MD.

Yes, the official HMV credit should stay.

Atul ji,

This post has evoked some very interesting discussion. We have discussed such informational issues earlier also – that a particular song was done actually by RD Burman, for a film being composed for by SD Burman, or that a particular song was actually composed by the person who was the assistant MD. Later on, when this person becomes an independent MD, should he be credited for his work done earlier, as an assistant to another MD. I would rather let the official credits stand as they are.

In this case, the scenarios suggested by Arun ji and Sadanand ji sound to be more plausible, rather than the fact that Vinod came in and took the full responsibility of actually composing the remaining songs. Arun ji has stated about ‘Alif Laila’ (1953), that Madan Mohan stepped in after passing away of Shyam Sundar, to complete the recording of songs. Yet, the film still officially carries full credit for Shyam Sundar as the MD.

On another note, the habit of drinking has really cut short and destroyed many a talented careers, and there are many names that one can list. I had this discussion with Nalin ji a while back, and during this discussion, amongst other examples, he also talked about the Lata – Shyam Sunder episode. In reality, Shyam Sundar did cross some limits in his state of inebriation, when Lata ji objected to his being drunk while at the recording session. This infuriated her so much that she immediately walked out, and vowed never to work with him again.

Sudhir ji,
You have rightly pointed out that Shyamsunder, under the spell of Alcohol, did cross his limits in commenting and this annoyed Lata ji no end forcing her to quit working with hiom.
However, when Shyamsunder was in trouble and his films had been rare, lata did help him when he called he,forgetting the earlier bad experience. Here is what Lata said aboput Shyamsunder,in an interview-
” During the period of 1946-1947, I was an employee of Master Vinayak.

One day he summoned me to his house in Dadar and told me that Shyam Sudner had come and wants to hear you sing. I complied and sang a Bandish. There was no reaction on Shyam Sunder’s face. Days passed by. Master Vinayak met an untimely end. I was searching for work.

Then one day, Shyam Sunder called for me.

I have sung many melodious songs for Shyam Sunder. I remember a qawaali from the film Chaar Din. The singers included Rafi, Shivdayal Batish, Rajkumari, Hamida, Johrabai and Iqbal. This qawaali, Haseenon ki adaein bhi by Shyam Sunder was very challenging and consisted of difficult taans.

Our rehearsal was going on. I was the focus of his attention. He was keen to know how I perform on a song which had a Punjabi style. I sang all the taans much to the delight of Shyam Sunder. He told everyone, “This is how to sing a song in Punjabi style.”

Shyam Sunder was a jovial person. Due to some misunderstandings, I was not singing for him for a period of time.

One day, I received a message from him. He had composed a song especially for me. The song Tujhko Bhulana Mere Basme Nahi from the film Alif Laila was the last song that I sang for him. He met a sad, untimely death.

The song Sajanki Galiyan from the film Bazaar is my favourite. ”

Sudhir ji, Lata has sung four following songs for Shyam Sunder in Alif Laila (1953), so it is not clear whether she can take such a stand in the beginning of her career. : Bahaar aayi khilin kaliyaan (Alif Laila) (1953) Singer-Lata; Khaamosh kyun ho taaron (Alif Laila) (1953) Singer-Lata, Rafi; Kyaa raat suhaani hai (Alif Laila) (1953) Singer-Rafi, Lata; Tujhko bhulaanaa mere bas mein nahin (Alif Laila) (1953) Singer-Lata

This is really deeply analytical and thought provoking discussion which leave little to be added. However, I chatted about it with my knowledgeable friend Sh. Vijay Ghoman of Nashik, who besides recounting the above points added that there is a “striking simlarity” in the tunes of “Sun lo sajan meri baat”, Lahore 1949 and “Aese rasiya ka kya aetabaar”, Dholak 1951 both by Shyam Sunder. This is I called as a ‘circumstantial evidence’ indicating that all the songs of Lahore under discussion are in all probability be creation of Shyam Sunder ji.

Thanks again to all who contributed to such an informative discussion.

Issaq Mujawar has written about this film in his book ” चित्रपट संगिताचा सुव र्न काळ – १९३१ -१९६०. (Golden Period of Film Music 1931 -1960). As per his account the tiff (Lata quitting the recording) happened during the recording during “Bahare Fir Bhi Ayegi” due to drunken slur of Shyam Sunder. And actor Om Prakash played the role of mediator to bring back Lata ji for the recording since Sham Sunder was not ready to record it in any other singer’s voice. The song under discussion may be was recorded before this incidence as he too mentions that she sang for him in Alif Laila. There is no mention of Vinod in the write up.

Umesh
