Main hoon Ali baba

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Here is a Talat song with all its sweetness and a very catchy tune. It is from the film CHAAR CHAAND-1953, which had music by Nashad. Two popular songs from this film are already posted on this Blog. Out of the total 9 songs, just one song was composed by another MD-K.Manohar.

In those days,Chaar Chaand had made a sort of a record that as many as 12 Playback singers were used in the film for just 9 songs. This record was broken by the film,’ Biwi aur Makan’-1966, in which as many as 13 Playback singers were used.

This song is a duet of Talat Mehmood and Premlata. Singer Premlata was Nashad’s favourite singer. Just before migrating to Pakistan, Naashaad married Premlata and took her as his second wife to Pakistan along with him. Talat had one solo and one duet in this film.

Talat Mehmood was one of my favourite singers of that era. Born on 24-2-1924 at Lucknow,Talat was the youngest among six siblings. His father was the Bodyguard of the Nawab of Rampur. Being a staunch religious man his father did not like singing or other arts. But Talat’s voice was very sweet and Talat must have inherited that sweet voice. Talat used to sing Saigal songs and got appreciation from visitors and neighbours- but all behind father !

Before completing school education Talat joined Lucknow’s famous ‘Morris College of Music’ and learnt classical music for 3 years. After passing Inter Science examination, he gave up studies and sang on Lucknow Radio station. Then he went on a singing tour of Delhi, Lahore and Peshawar in 1939. In 1942 his first record ” sab din ek samaan nahin” was cut. But he became famous after his song ‘ Tasveer teri dil mera” was recorded in Calcutta. HMV promptly brought out many records of this song.

He had an ambition of becoming a Singer/Actor just like Saigal and he acted in a Bangla film,”Samapti”, which was a Flop. He came to Bombay in 1949 and Anil Biswas gave him a break in the film ARZOO-49. Talat Mehmood once narrated this First experience thus,

” After the successful stint of NFS in Calcutta,I came to Bombay to try in Hindi films. One day, Anil Biswas sent me a message to go and meet him. I was damn scared. I was his fan. Somebody had told me that film singing is a different skill and that I may not be able to do it, so I had lost confidence in myself. There was a second call from Anil da. Then he sent the third call with a person, who was supposed to get me to Anil da by holding my neck. When I reached there, Anil da burst into anger. He shouted ‘ who the hell you think you are ? Not even ONE song yet and playing difficult already ?. Ok. I have prepared this song and tune for you. Come on, start ! ‘ I was so nervous that even after 10 takes I could not sing it properly. Anil da said,’ I know you are nervous today, but you can do it easily. Come after 15 days and we will record the song. If I reject you now, your career will end before it starts, as no Music Director will ever entertain you.”

I went there after 15 days and in the FIRST take itself I recorded the song ‘ Aye dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal”, sung by Dilip on the screen. “

This song became a hit and there was no looking back, with a series of films in line. Even while he sang in films he also recorded NFS from time to time.

While he became a singer much in demand, the idea of becoming Singer/actor prevailed on him and he acted in Dil e nadan, Diwali ki raat, Lala Rukh, Waris, Raftaar, Daak Babu, Ek Gaon ki kahani and Sone ki chidiya. His songs from these films became hit and the films Flopped. He rued afterwards-‘ I should have learnt from Samapti itself, but I committed a blunder’. His ill-wishers started spreading rumours that Talat had given up singing to concentrate on acting. He said,” I shouted and shouted that first I was a singer and then an actor, but no one listened to me” and consequently his song offers dwindled. In the 50s Talat sang in 180 films, in 60s in only 39 films and in the 70s just 4 films.

Another reason for his decline was the changed pattern of film music. Earlier a film song used to be a mixture of good Lyrics, good tune and good singing, but now all factors had undergone changes. The third reason, according to Talat, was that he never ever went begging for work, nor did he join any group.

One objection was that Talat’s voice did not suit new generation Heroes. Now Talat had sung for almost all leading actors who had different voices, then how come his voice suited them then ? Talat had sung for Raj, Dilip, Dev,Ashok Kumar, Pradeep, Bharat Bhushan, Amarnath, Ajit, Karan Dewan, Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Nasir Khan, Shekhar, Chetan Anand, Balraj Sahni, Manhar Desai, Guru Dutt, Sajjan, V.Shantaram, Premnath, Kamran, Mahipal, Jagdev, Manoj kumar etc etc.

Talat was of the opinion that a Recordist can either make or break a singer while recording a song. As an example he says,” take the case of Naushad’s AADMI. I had a duet with Rafi in it-‘Kaisi haseen raat’. While recording, my voice was recorded too soft. I objected saying that it will spoil the balance of duet singing, but I was told that that was the requirement of film situation and Manoj Kumar’s role. I kept quiet. When Manoj heard the song he rejected it outright saying it was too soft for him and then Mahendra Kapoor sang in the film version.”

When Talat’s film singing career ended, he did stage shows and travelled all over the world.

He narrated an interesting episode- ‘ I was touring West Indies. There was a hugh Theatre with a capacity of 6000 people which was packed all the 4 days. For this trip, I had specially carried 9 coloured ‘Zabba’s for me. They were brought specially from Lucknow. The Housekeeping Girls of my hotel liked these so much that, one by one all Zabbas were stolen and I had to wear Shirt and pant for my remaining shows ! ”

All the above information and anecdotes are from a series of interviews Talat gave to Shirish Kanekar for his books- cinema dot com and Gaaye chala jaa. Thanks to Shirish ji for this. more info and anecdotes sometime later with another song of Talat Mehmood.

Let us now enjoy this song.

Missed you Arunji!
Thanks for this unusual song by Talat Saab. It’s really a treat. Talat Saab did not loose his soft voice with this catchy tune. That’s why these singers were known as Masters. Loved the anecdotes of his life and entry to Hindi film music. Will wait for more about his life in your future posts.

Arun ji,

Yes, an unusual song. Many thanks for the interesting post – always full of so much anecdotes and information.

As I hear the song, I find that in fact there are three distinct female singers, although all sources, including the Geet Kosh, carry the credits for only one, that is Premlata. The other two voices sound familiar but need a keener ear than mine to make a clear identification.

Atul ji has posted the revised and correctly color coded lyrics to include all three female singers. As I listened carefully and made the corrections, I find that at least two lines in this song will need explanation, for these lines use somewhat unfamiliar Urdu words. The lines are

“kaali aankhen hain hijaali”
“mere abroo hain hilaali”

‘hijaali’ = The word is a derivative of ‘hijaab’ which means curtain, or ‘purdaah’. ‘hijaali’ means ‘visible, although behind a curtain’. The the phrase ‘aankhen hain hijaali’ means ‘eyes that have the ability to see through curtains’. Lines from a song from film ‘Aarzoo’ (1965) come to mind.
“aji laakh pardon mein chhup jaayiegaa”
“nazar aayiegaa, nazar aayiegaa”
“aji rooth kar ab. . . ”
This verse expresses the meaning behind the word ‘hijaali’.

‘abroo’ = eyebrows

‘hilaali’ = The word is a variant of ‘hilaal’ which means ‘crescent moon’. ‘hilaali’ means shaped like a crescent moon. So the expression ‘mere abroo hain hilaali’ means my eyebrows are shaped like a crescent moon.

Sudhir ji,
Thanks for your help with difficult Urdu words.
Though I had heard the song few times before sending it,I felt that the different female voices were of a singer from the chorus, which is the case many times. It is difficult to name these kind of singers. Probably, even the composer may be unable to name them.
Your Hindi lyrics are simply wonderful.
Thanks once again.
