The Voice of Mukesh #24
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
We come to 1948 now. From the previous years, i.e. from 1942 to 1947, all songs of Mukesh, as per current records, are now posted on this blog. With one exception. I am still trying to trace the Mukesh – Shamshad Begum duet from ‘Laakhon Mein Ek’, the one song still to be posted for 1947.

Mukesh’s career was on the up and up. If 1947 was the best year thus far for him, with 21 of his songs being released, then 1948 was better. Mukesh’s tally in this year is 37 songs for 17 films. The film ‘Anokhi Ada’ had maximum songs by him in this year. The number is five. Next is ‘Mela’ with 4 songs sung by him. Another interesting feature is that, expectedly, we are now moving into more familiar terrain. Of the 37 songs from 1948, 26 songs are already posted here, and we have 11 more to go to complete the tally for that year’s songs to be all accounted for.

Today, I present a very endearing Mukesh – Geeta Dutt duet from the 1948 film ‘Toote Taare’. The film is a social drama, produced under the banner of Omar Khayyam Films, Bombay and is directed by Harish. The star cast of the film includes Sheikh Mukhtar, Shamim, Kanhaiya Lal, Mridula, Putlibai, Murad, Sudhir, Babu, S Ghosh, Sultan, Sharif, Kanchan Kumar, Anwaribai, Laddan, Agha Dehlavi. The film has 8 songs, written by two lyricists –Anjum Pilibhiti and Rafiq Ajmeri. However, the specific information of which song is written by which poet, is not available. The music direction is by Shaukat Ali, also known as Nashaad.

A very ticklish duet – the lady is entreating the gentleman to take her for a sightseeing visit to Delhi. And the gentleman is promising her that not only will he take her to Delhi in a motor, but will also take her to Lucknow and Barielly. He promises to buy her cosmetics (‘surmaa’ or kohl), and that he will lay his eyes in her path. And the lady promises him her love, and a hug. Only the audio of this song is available, so it is not feasible to comment on the on screen performance of this song. Looking at the star cast, I am just wondering that this song might be performed on screen by Sheikh Mukhtar. Not being familiar with some of the other names on the list, I am not sure who else it could be.

A lovely endearing sound from sixty five years ago. Enjoy.

ओ ओ ओ

Sudhirji,
Many thanks for posting these rare and difficult to trace Mukesh numbers. Wishing you all the luck for the elusive duet from 1947. I did try and failed badly. Hope you hit quarter century of Mukesh special posts with this song only.
