Ye phoolon ka gajra ye mera singaar

This article is written by Aparna, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a new contributor to this blog.
Hmm, at last I started writing my first blog. I was thinking of doing this for a long, long time. Ever since I came to know about a very benevolent soul who lets all who want to write, to write on his blog. It is so sweet of him, I used to think. But didn’t do it for various reasons. Most of all, my laziness. Now I have shook off my laziness and am presenting my thoughts ….. Hope Atulites don’t mind it (provided of course Atul finds my writing worthy enough to be published). Published, oh that is a big word to use. My first publication, if and when that happens, I will be flying in air like the girl in the song I am discussing here. Now, please don’t ask me how else one can fly, one can only fly in air. 🙂
So many accidents and that too, happy ones have led to this. While searching for something on youtube, I stumbled on a song called “laagi naahi choote”. It was supposed to have been sung by Lata and Dilip Kumar. Lata was alright, I could surely believe it. Dilip Kumar, what??? The actor who always had a morose, sad expression on his face in all the movies that I had watched!! I just could not believe it. He was sounding very natural, as though he was a professional singer. I had to confirm this and I had no option other than googling. I googled and the beloved google threw another surprise at me. The first search result led me to Atulji’s kingdom. Then I was like a child who all of a sudden discovered a huge playground close to her house which was hitherto unknown to her. Imagine her joy!!
This was on 1st November 2011. I left a comment on the page of this song. Even though my comment didn’t evoke a response, I didn’t mind. I was happy and very content. Then from here, I travelled to “songsofyore”. Atulji’s web site doesn’t seem to have what is called “blogroll” or reference to the songsofyore site but I am sure I was introduced to it because of “Atulsongaday.me ”. There I read an article on Suman Kalyanpur’s songs. I had heard of her but had not thought much about her songs. The author of this article has talked highly of her and I was intrigued. I downloaded all songs that were available for download. They stayed in my collection untouched for long. A couple of days back and again accidentally I started listening to them on my ipod. I had inadvertently touched this particular playlist. What a gem of songs I discovered on that day. They have become earworms as Atulji says. I must have listened to them n number of times from then onwards. My sincere thanks to AKji of songsofyore.
I decided that if at all I blog, my first blog should be on one of these songs. The next obvious task was to check which songs were already covered and which weren’t. To my dismay, I found that most of them were already written about. I had few choices only. One was “chodo chodo mori baiyya” from “Miyan Biwi Raazi” and the other was “yeh phholon ka gajra” from the movie “Sara Jahaan Hamaara”. Both are equally sweet. Touch choice na? No, it wasn’t for me! Because I chose the easiest, rather the laziest way. I could get hold of the lyrics of “phoolon ka gajra” easily on net and I had to only verify it. So my choice was “yeh phoolon ka gajra”.
This bubbly song is written by Anjum Jaipuri about whom Sudhirji wrote recently. Music director is someone called Babul. Well, I hadn’t heard of him at all, but our in-house expert Mr. Arunkumar Deshmukh has information about him here.
The cast of the movie includes Premnath, Shyaama, Azra, Hiralal, Jankidas etc. It must be picturized on Shyaama (there is no video available to confirm the same). Doesn’t it suit Shyaama’s effervescent personality to the T? And it is sung so sweeeeetly by Sumanji.
The song is about, of course, love. The girl in love sings about her gajra, singaar and sapne. Can any of these not figure in a Bollywood song about love. 🙂 She suspects that something is mixed in the flowers as the effect of the phoolon ka gajra is so very vast. Oh God, earth is rocking and sky is shaking!!! And she is flying in air when earth and sky are in this condition. As an aside, hope she lands without injuries 😉 What more, she has even seen “unko” and she has also seen love being returned in his gaze. She is experiencing everything on an elevated mode. She feels the play of shehnayiyan in her breath and she has forgotten how to tread even two steps. Pure bliss for her, she is in a fantasy world of her own!!! Enjoy the song ……
Song-Ye phoolon ka gajra ye mera singaar (Saara Jahaan Hamaara)(1961) Singer-Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics-Anjum Jaipuri, MD-Baabul
Lyrics
yeh phoolon ka gajra
yeh mera singaar
ho koi leke aaya hai sapne hazaar
ho phoolon ka gajra
yeh mera singaar
ho koi leke aaya hai sapne hazaar
ho phoolon ka gajra aa aa aa o
yeh gajre ke phoolon mein kya mil gaya
zameen jhoom uthi aasmaan hil gaya
hawaon mein udne lage aaj hum
Ke unki nazar mein bhi dekha hai pyaar
ho koi leke
koi leke aaya hai sapne hazaar
ho phoolon ka gajra aa aa aa o
un aankhon ne bhi kuchch kahi daastan
muskuraane laga aaj saara jahaan
saans lene mein bajti hai shehnaayiyan
aa gayi zindagi mein anokhi bahaar
ho koi leke
koi leke aaya hai sapne hazaar
ho phoolon ka gajra aa aa o
meri aankhon ne dekha thha sapna koi ee
meri aankhon ne dekha thha sapna koi
ban gaya hai mohabbat mein apna koi
do kadam ab to chalna bhi mushkil hua
baat woh ho gayi jiska thha intzaar
ho koi leke
koi leke aaya hai sapne hazaar
ho phoolon ka gajra
yeh mera singaar
ho koi leke
koi leke aaya aaya hai sapne hazaar
ho phoolon ka gajra aa aa aa o

Aparna,
This is a song of breath-taking beauty and I am not surprised you have gone so lyrical. It is my top favourite song of Suman Kalyanpur. I am gratified that I had some role in your Suman Kalyanpur voyage.
Congratulations on your debut, and hope to see you more often.
