Today’s song is a marching song from the film ‘Veer Babruwahan’ (1950).

Now, the name ‘Babruwahan’ is a strange name and I am sure most readers have never heard it, at least those who are below 60 years of age. I heard his story for the first time from my grandfather when I was about 8 years old. Being an odd name and sounding even funny, it remained in my memory. Later I found his story in the 14th parvaThe Ashwamedha Parva of Mahabharat in the subparva 91-92.

When I saw this film, I was actually surprised how the filmmakers even chose this story, which was not a very well known one from Mahabharat. But then, 1950 was a period when the entire country and the film industry was in a turmoil and both were trying hard to set the things in an order, with whatever efforts were needed.

After the unexpected and suddenly shocking demise of KL Saigal Sb in the beginning of 1947, India getting its Independence in August 1947 and then the ruling government trying to cope up with the huge migration of population on both sides of the newly created borders, the period from 1947 to 1950 was a testing time, both for the country and the film industry. Finally the Indian Dominion became the Republic of India on 26-1-1950 and the British finally repealed their article 395 to declare India to be a fully independent Democratic Republic.

The year 1950 also began an attempt by the film industry to make and present films on traditional value building, stories from our glorious history, importance of joint family and building Patriotism, Socialism and the stress on Indian folk music and dances, like in films ‘Mother India’ and ‘Naya Daur’ (both 1957) etc. Ace producers and Nehru fans like Bimal Roy, Raj Kapoor, Mehboob etc. also tried to push the Nehruvian philosophy of Socialism through their films. This period also saw stress on presenting our Mythology and Religious stories through films. To make films more interesting, melody and musical entertainments were made in bulk. As the decade of 1950-1960 was ending, the impact of western world in lifestyles and music (like Rock N Roll, Cha Cha Cha, Hawaian and Spanish tunes etc) became pronounced and the next decade i.e. 1960-1970 was full of such films. But that is another story…..

It was not just the impact of the western music but also the flow of films from Hollywood like ‘Ben Hur’, ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Sound of Music’, ‘Ten Commandments’, ‘Quo Vadis’, ‘Samson and Delialah’, ‘Seven Samurai’ etc. became very popular in India. These films taught the Indian film makers that even smaller films (in terms of duration) can be popular if the content is solid and handled properly. Hitchcock films inspired films like ‘Apradhi Kaun’ (1957) etc. The end part of the 1950 was a mixture of films, as if the industry was in a fix as to which way it should go in the 1960’s decade !

Some of the interesting films in the year 1950 were….

  • ‘DAHEJ’ – V Shantaram’s film depicted the sad plight and the defeat of a girl’s father to refuse giving dowry in his daughter’s marriage. This effective film paved the way to the enactment of the ‘ Prevention of Dowry’ act in later years.
  • JOGAN – a love and hate story of an atheist and temple Nun. Excellent songs.
  • BAWRE NAIN – a tragic love story is remembered as the first hit film of composer Roshan. Superb songs.
  • SAMADHI – the conflict of two brothers, patriotism and hit songs.
  • SARGAM – a musical story of 7 sisters. Memorable songs by C Ramchandra.
  • MASHAAL, SANGRAM and MUQADDAR – all good films, but could not stop the eclipse of the giant Bombay Talkies.
  • HAR HAR MAHADEV – An unexpected hit indicated the oncoming years of Mythology and Religious films till 1960, in a record number – 124 films in 10 years.
  • AFSAR – the first film of Navketan banner. Based on Gogol’s The inspector General could not do justice to the original, in spite of good songs.

Other good films were

  •  BABUL – a tragedy love story of Dilip and Nargis
  • SHEESH MAHAL – a depiction of the collapse of the old social systems.
  • ARZOO – had excellent songs by Anil Biswas.
  • PEHLA ADMI – Bimal Roy’s film had a backdrop of the Indian National Army of Subhash Bose.
  • DASTAAN was yet another tragedy film.
  • AANKHEN was composer Madan Mohan’s first film.

‘Veer Babruwahan’ was made by Homi Wadia’s Basant Pictures. It was directed by Nanabhai Bhatt (aka Batuk Bhai) who had earlier directed the film ‘Muqabala’ (1942), husband of a small-time actress Shirin and father of Mahesh Bhatt. Music was by the king of melody – Chitragupt, MA. The film’s cast consisted of Shashi Kapoor Sr., Mrudula, Urmila, Amarnath, Baby Madhuri, SN Tripathi, Umakant and many others.

Baby Madhuri – her real name was Maahe Laqa (meaning moon faced). She was the daughter of Master Ali Baksh, MD and Iqbal Begum, a cine artiste. In other words Baby Madhuri was the youngest sister of actress Meena Kumari and her sister actress Khurshid Jr. Born in a family of film people, Baby Madhuri was good at acting and singing. She was picked up by Director Nazir of Hind Pictures who took her for his film ‘Sandesha’ (1940). He is the same Nazir, whose first wife was Sitara Devi. He was the maternal uncle i.e. maama of K Asif (of ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ fame) . He later divorced Sitara devi (actually, she had eloped with K Asif ) and married actress Swarnalata and both migrated to Pakistan. Nazir’s studio was burnt during the communal riots in Bombay. Author Manto has detailed all this in his book.

In Wadia’s film ‘Vishwas’ (1943), the talents of Baby Madhuri in acting and singing flowered and she was appreciated much. Then she acted and sang some songs in films like ‘Anjaan’, ‘Jungle Princess’, ‘Muqabala’, ‘Ekta’ (Sindhi), ‘Andhera’, ‘Mahatma Vidur’, ‘Paraya Dhan’, ‘Bachpan’, ‘Nai Maa’ etc.

She was also called Madhu. She later married actor Mehmood. She was very fond of new fashions and western clothes. Due to this, she became a kleptomaniac and was caught many times stealing things and shoplifting. She knew riding, cycling and swimming too. She spoke good English, though not much educated.

After Mehmood divorced her, she got married to barrister Kishore Sharma, an associate of Nani Palkhivala.
[Thanks to shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji for info on Baby Madhuri].

The story of the film ‘Veer Babruvahan’, is as follows,

Babruvahan was the son of Arjun and Chitrangada, the princess of Manipur. He did not participate in the Mahabharat war from the side of Pandavas and remained in Manipur because he was the heir to the throne of Manipur after his maternal grandfather as he was adopted as his son by his maternal grandfather.

During the Ashwamedh Yagna, Babruvahan caught the horse and had a fight with Arjun. In the fight, he was able to kill Arjun as Arjun was cursed by Devi Ganga, mother of Bhishma, to die at the hands of his son. Thereafter, Ulupi, the other wife of Arjun, who knew about this curse, revived Arjun to life with the help of a special gem from the Naaglok.

Today’s song is a song to inspire the army of Babruwahan, who is proceeding to fight and kill Arjun – without knowing that Arjun was his father. This is the 6th song of this film and is a sweet song. Enjoy the song video….

Today’s song is from a C grade Costume film Shahi Mehman (1955).

The film was produced by J.P.Saini and T.N.Dhar. It was directed by an expert of such films, namely Balwant Bhatt. The 9 songs from this film were written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Anjum Jaipuri and Hasrat Jaipuri. The music was provided by Bipin-Babul. The singers were Mohd. Rafi, Shamshad Begum and Asha Bhosle. The cast of this film included Shyama, Ranjan, Johnny Walker, Shammi, Rajni and others.

In the days when C grade action/ Costume films were made in large numbers, few actors featured prominently as the ” Hero” of such films. Master Bhagwan, Baburao Pehelwan, Kamran, Daljit and Ranjan were some names that come to mind offhand.

Ranjan was one actor who was very different from other action heroes. While there were very few highly educated heroes in social films in that period, Ranjan became a highly educated, versatile and multifaceted actor for Action films. He was not only an actor, but also an editor of a magazine, a Dancer, writer, Fencing expert of the Olympic standard, a Fellow of New York University, a public speaker and much much more. His Biodate is very inspiring. let us take a look at it……RANJAN – An artiste of countless arts ! In the early times of the Film Industry, very few educated people used to join here. That is why Graduates or Postgraduates used to flaunt their degrees with pride- like Moti, B.A.-the lyricist ( though he was actually M.A.), or Kavi Pradeep’s pseudo name- Miss Kamal B.A. or even singer actor Surendra as B.A., LL.B. etc.etc.
After reading about this artiste, you will wonder if any such multi-talented person ever lived here ?

A highly qualified person and that too in an unrelated subject joining films was a wonder then. Thus, a young man with an unlikely name for a Hero, like RAMNARAYAN VENKATRAMAN SARMA Alias actor RANJAN was a novelty. Ranjan was born in Madras on 2-3-1918 in an orthodox Brahmin family.

He was an expert in playing Violin. He was a qualified dancer in Kathak,Kathakali and Bharat Natyam. He was an expert driver, swimmer and a swordsman of Olympic standards. He graduated in physics. After M.Sc. He did his Doctorate too. Ranjan knew 12 Indian and 4 foreign languages. He edited a Dance and Drama Magazine and wrote several books on it. He earned a Fellowship of New York University.

Ranjan learnt and became an A grade flyer. He was the first to buy a Rolls Royce car and a Tiger Moth Aircraft, in the Indian film industry ( later Motilal also owned an aircraft). He was a good painter and a Trained magician. He became Magician’s Association president for Bombay. P C Sorcar was All India president then. He was often invited by European and American Universities for lectures. Ranjan owned two big Hotels also. Ranjan was a good shooter. He played Cricket and Soccer frequently. Ranjan was a regular singer on Madras A.I.R..

In his first Tamil film, his Heroine was Vasundhara Devi- mother of Vyjayanthimala. Ranjan entered Hindi films through his blockbuster film ” Chandralekha-48 “. He did 58 Hindi films in the 50s and 60s. He was a script writer also.He wrote the story and screenplay of the film Munimji-55. He was a choreographer also. In the 50s decade the quartet of Raj, Dev, Dilip and Ashok kumar was ruling Hindi industry. Ranjan was not given any importance here. He was not even invited for the Golden jubilee of Talkie film celebrations in Bombay. He lived in his bungalow in Chembur Union park.
He was spotted by a Tamil Producer, when he was standing in a Bus queue and he made his Debut in the film ” Ashok Kumar “-1941. After a few films in Tamil and Telugu, he got the role of SHASHANK in the Magnum Opus film Chandralekha in 1948. The Drum dance and his fencing were the two attractions in the film. The final sword fighting is considered the Longest ever Fencing fight in films till today ! The film was a Hit and Ranjan became typecast in Action films. Ranjan was a very poor actor, but his Fencing skills were marvellous.

In 1949, came ” NISHAN “, based on the Hollywood film ” The Corsican brothers’-one good and one bad. It was a story of twins. The audience liked a scene from the film which showed that there were marks on one brother’s back if the other one was whipped ! The film, in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, was a hit everywhere mainly for its fencing scenes. In ‘Mangala’ opposite Bhanumathi, he was the villain and the Hero too.

He was invited by New York University for a Fellowship, but Vasan did not leave him, so after Mangala-1950, as soon as the contract was over, Ranjan came to Bombay.

‘Shin shinaki Boobla Boo’-1952 saw him with Rehana but as a Romantic Hero, he was worse than Bharat Bhushan or Pradeep Kumar !

He acted in Sindbad the sailor, Baghi, Shahenshah, Kafila, Baghdad, Baap Beti, Nishan Danka and a host of B and C grade films, many of them dubbed or remakes of southern films. He was known for only Fencing. But he never became famous like Stewart Granger in ” Scaramouche” for his fencing. In the 50s he acted in 23 films, in 60s he did 18 films and in the 70s his tally was 17 films. A total of 58 films in Hindi.

After Sword fighting became obsolete he shifted to writing. The story of the film MUNIMJI-55 was written by him. After a few years in the south he was seen again in ‘Chor chor’-74 and ‘Chaitali’-76. Ram Balram – 80 was his last film.

He married a Muslim girl and she converted to Hinduism taking the name of Laxmi. Ranjan wrote 12 books on Dancing and music.

He shifted to the USA to live with his son, but died on 12-9-1983,in New Jersey-USA,due to Heart attack. He was so much forgotten that even the news of his death was not published in India.

Film Shahi mehman-(1955) was a Costume film. The story of this film was…..

Alamgir, the Emperor of the Kingdom of Aayyaz, was a lover of beauty. He was mad after beautiful girls. He married a beautiful girl Rukhsana. She knew that when a new girl would come, she would be killed. In a short time Alamgir wanted to marry Hasina, daughter of the Amir of Mehran. Rukhsana plans to kill her, with the help of her brother Hasan.

Hasan attacks Haseena, who is coming to the Capital in a procession., Same time, a gang of dacoits led by Jaanbaz, attacks the procession, looting everything and runs away with Haseena. Hasan is terrified and goes back and reports that he killed Hasina. When Jaanbaz learns that Haseena is the bride of Alamgir, he takes her to the king . The king thanks him and makes him a state guest (Shahi Mehman). Seeing her there, Rukhsana and Hasan again plan to kill her but everytime Jaanbaz saves her. Finally, they fall in love, sing songs and do all that the director tells them to do.

Rukhsana shows their romance to Alamgir. Enraged, the king arrests Jaanbaz and Haseena to kill them. Meanwhile Rukhsana falls from her palace terrace and dies accidentally. her brother Hasan revolts against Alamgir. With the help of Jaanbaz and his gang, they attack the castle. There is a sword fight in which Alamgir and Hasan die. Jaanbaz becomes the King and marries Haseena. All, including the audience in the theatre, are happy and return to their respective houses !

One of the cast of this film is Shammi -who was known popularly as Shammi Aunty in later years. Nargis Rabadi (24 April 1929 – 6 March 2018), better known by her stage name Shammi, was an actress who appeared in over two hundred Hindi films. Shammi remained a sought-after actress with filmmakers when it came to goofy and comic roles, especially in the period 1949–1969 and later from 1980–2002. Her famous films as supporting actress included Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Half Ticket, Halaku, Samaj Ko Badal Dalo, Khuda Gawah, Coolie No. 1, Gopi Kishan and Hum Saath Saath Hain and films with Rajesh Khanna like The Train, Aanchal, Kudrat, Red Rose, Awara Baap and Swarg. She had been a leading actress playing main female lead or second female lead in Hindi films between 1949–1955 as well. Later, from 1986 till 1998, she appeared in many popular television serials such as Dekh Bhai Dekh, Zabaan Sambhal Ke, Shriman Shrimati, Kabhi Yeh Kabhi Woh and Filmi Chakkar. Shammi was married to film producer and director Sultan Ahmed for seven years, before they were divorced. Shammi is the younger sister of fashion designer Mani Rabadi.

Nargis was born on 26-4-1929 in Bombay. Her father was a priest in an agyari (Parsi fire temple) and died when she was around three years old. After her father’s death, her mother used to cook food at all the religious functions organized by the Parsi community to earn money. Nargis had an elder sister Mani Rabadi, who was a fashion designer and worked extensively with many actresses as their dress designer in Hindi films between 1967 and 1994. Her mother’s younger sister lived with her. They stayed in Tata Blocks in Parel, South Mumbai in 1930–47 period. Her sister joined Johnson and Johnson as a secretary after completing her secondary school education.

In 1942, Johnson and Johnson manufactured tablets and Nargis was employed in the packing department. Her job was to collect the tablets that were not sealed in the tablet case, and had fallen off from the machine. She had to put them into big bottles which would go to hospitals for free distribution to patients. She was paid Rs 100 per month for doing this job.

Nargis got into films by chance. A family friend Chinuu Mama was working with filmmaker Mehboob Khan. Chinuu was very friendly with actor and producer Sheikh Mukhtar. At that time, Mukhtar was looking for an actress for the second lead, in a film he was to start with Begum Para as the main female lead. Chinnu Mama asked Nargis whether she would like to join films and asked her to meet Sheikh Mukhtar in the studios the next day. Mukhtar was concerned about her Hindi-speaking skills as she was a Parsi. Nargis immediately told a worried Sheikh that she would be talking with him in Hindi itself, and that he should point out any flaw if he was able to find any. Sheikh Mukhtar was quite shocked, but was impressed. The next day, she was called to Mahalaxmi studios for her screen test for a film. She was advised by director Tara Harish to change her name to “Shammi” as there was another actress named Nargis in the industry. Her monthly salary was Rs 500. She was asked to sign a three-year contract with a condition that she couldn’t work outside without their permission. She was just 18 when she signed her first film, Ustad Pedro, in January 1949. Ustad Pedro had Sheikh Mukhtar opposite Begum Para and Mukri as the comedian and it was directed by Tara Harish and this Begum Para-Sheikh Mukhtar starrer was a hit film at the box office in 1949.

She had to attend the studio every day and practice acting even when she had no shoot. Shammi had to read dialogues of other films and Harish, the film’s director, taught her a lot of things since he was an actor himself. Harish was directing another film, called Malhar. Shammi was given the main lead in that film. Since the director was the same, Shammi was allowed to work outside the Sheikh Mukthar banner. She got good reviews for Malhar. Malhar’s music was a super-hit and Malhar made Shammi a famous star. Shammi was financially stable now, so they shifted to Bandra. During the shooting of Malhar, she met Nargis Dutt through Jaddan bai, who was the mother of Nargis Dutt. They became good friends. After that meeting, Dutt would frequently call Shammi to her house in Marine Drive. Dutt was her best friend and later, because of their friendship she got a supporting role in the film Miss India. She quoted in an interview “Nargis was the first actor to be paid Rs 1 lakh; even Dilip Kumar did not get that kind of money then. It was the talk of the industry. Actors like me who did supporting roles would get anything around Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000.”

Her third film was with Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, called Sangdil; it was released late in 1952 and was only a moderate success. Since Sangdil was unpopular with the audience, she did not get work for seven months. Shammi used to play the main lead or second lead in films from 1949 to 1952, but after Sangdil, she started taking whatever work came to her and took a few films with vamp roles. She quoted in an interview: “Many people scolded me when I did that but I was clear in my mind that I had to work. Sitting at home would not help me since I was the breadwinner of the family.” She got roles as the leading heroine opposite heroes such as Mahipal, Manhar Desai and Karan Dewan. After the release of K. Asif’s hit film Musafirkhana, she was flooded with similar roles. Her role opposite comedian Johnny Walker was appreciated in this film.

Some of her successful movies as supporting actress in this period were Ilzam (1954), Pehli Jhalak (1955), Bandish (1955), Azaad (1955), Halaku (1956), Son of Sinbad (1955), Raj Tilak (1958), Khazanchi (1958), Ghar Sansar (1958), Aakhri Dao (1958), Kangan (1959), Bhai-Bahen (1959) and Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai (1960). The rest of her films released from 1952 to 1960 were deemed as commercial failures. In the period 1962 to 1970, her comedy and vamp roles made an impact in successful films such as Half Ticket, Ishaara, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Preet Na Jane Reet, Aamne – Saamne, Upkar, Ittefaq, Sajan, Doli, Raja Saab and The Train.

Shammi became pregnant two times, but both times she miscarried, and therefore she and Sultan Ahmed did not have any children. This had an adverse effect on their marriage, which lasted for seven years. During that period, the couple had bought a house and her husband wanted to put the house in her name, but Shammi was of the opinion that since her sister-in-law was not doing anything, Ahmed should put the house in his sister’s name. Ahmed’s brother in law’s family resided with them. Sultan’s brother’s wife was uneducated, so Shammi took care of the child. Shammi admitted the child to a school in Shimla. Due to some differences, she broke up with her husband in 1980. She walked out of the house without any cash in hand, and left without her car too. She had the old house where she stayed with her mother in Bandra, so she shifted there. Nargis Dutt was upset when Shammi separated from her husband. Dutt helped Shammi get a role in The Burning Train within 8 days after Shammi had left her house. Her friend Rajesh Khanna helped her get small roles in films with him in the lead from 1980 such as Red Rose (film), Aanchal, Kudrat, Awara Baap and Swarg. These films again got her noticed as a supporting actress and hence revived her career.

To help her recover from the losses, Rajesh Khanna, who was producing television series then, helped Shammi get a few shows to produce on Doordarshan. She was getting paid well for her roles in the films and in television serials and she started saving money. From her very first movie, she never went asking for work—the work came to her through some close friend. Her performances in serials such as Dekh Bhai Dekh, Zabaan Sambhal Ke, Shriman Shrimati, Kabhi Yeh Kabhi Woh and Filmi Chakkar were appreciated. She was very much in demand from 1990 to 2000, appearing in many successful films such as Coolie No 1, Hum, Mardon Wali Baat, Gurudev, Gopi Kishan, Hum Saath-Saath Hain and Imtihaan. Her portrayal of the role of a drug addict in Mahesh Bhatt’s Lahu Ke Do Rang had stunned the audience. Movie offers, however, stopped coming to her after 2002 since she was aging. She was rarely approached for roles from 2008 to 2011. In all, Shammi acted in 222 films, directed 1 film (Pighalta Aasman-87) and sang 2 songs in 2 films.

She made a comeback with Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi in 2013; as Bela Sehgal, the director, wanted her to do it because it was the role of a Parsi woman. She died in her sleep on 6 March 2018, from natural causes at the age of 88. ( Thanks for some information from Wikipedia, bollywood news.com, Chand Raat- book by Babu Moshai,muVyz and my notes.)

Today’s song is a duet sung by Asha Bhosle and Mohd. Rafi. This is the 3rd song of this film on this Blog.

#the Decade of Fifties –1951 – 1960 #
——————————————————————

“Saltanat-1954” was directed by Dwarka Khosla for ‘Vikas Productions’. It had Shyama, Manhar Desai, Anwar, Sulochana, Neeru, Tripathi, B.M. Vyas, Babu Raje, Shanta Patel, Muhammad Ismail, D.R. Begam and others.

“Saltanat-1954” has six songs in it which were shared by two lyricists Gopal Singh Nepali- four songs and Anjum Jaipuri-two songs.

Music for this movie was composed by Chitragupt.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 02.08.1954.

HFGK Vol-III (1951-1960) mentions in its foot-note for this movie that this movie was created under the supervision of Homi Wadia.

“Saltanat-1954” had made its debut on this blog on 17.04.2015 whern its ‘lovely song’ ‘ham thhe intezaar mein, ghaayal tere pyaar mein’ was presented by our respected Shri Sudhir Kapur ji. This song is in the voice of Asha Bhonsle.

The second song from this movie was presented by Shri Atul ji on 18.06.2018 which is ‘teer na talwaar se duniya maane pyaar se’ which also is another ‘fast paced’ song from this movie. This song is sung by Shamshad Begam.

Both the abovementioned songs from this movie have lyrics written by Gopal Singh Nepali.

Today we listen to the third song from this movie which is yet another ‘lovely-fast paced’ song sung by Shamshad Begam. ALyricist for this song is Anjum Jaipuri.

The ‘lilting’ music for the today’s song is composed by Chitragupt.

I wish to express my gratitude to the up-loader of the songs of this movie, which has provided us with the opportunity to bring them here.

I do not remember to have listened to the songs of this movie earlier. When I listened to this song in today’s post, I also listened to the earlier two songs of this movie which are already on the blog. I guess that the remaining songs of this movie must be interesting songs too. From the list I can say that the at least one of the remaining three is ‘special song’ for us. 🙂 Let us see when it is going to appear on the blog.

For now let us listen to this song. Only its audio is available.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and the picturisation of it’s’ songs.

Enjoy the song now …

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the movie “Saara Jahaan Hamaara-1961”.

Three songs from this movie have been posted on the blog earlier. I do not remember to have heard the song associated with this movie name earlier. I had not read also about this movie earlier till the preparation of this post.

“Saara Jahaan Hamaara-1961” was directed by Prakash Chhabra for ‘India Films’.

It had Premnath, Shyama, Heeralal, Rajeshwari, Azra, Jankidas, Majnu, Ajay Kumar and others.

Here is brief information about this movie provided by Shri Arunkumar ji in his comments on a song from this movie posted on the blog earlier.

SARA JAHAN HAMARA-1961 was a film when Premnath as a hero was becoming a misfit, due to his age. As such he had started accepting some character roles also.
An India Films movie, it was directed by Prakash Chhabda, who had earlier directed one flop film Shahzada in 1955.The music was by Babul(of the Bipin-Babul jodi) and the lyrics were by Anjum Jaipuri and Kaamil Chandpuri.

Mangal (Premnath) is a deadly criminal. When he comes, even the police are afraid. An orphan, Vagabond and gunda mangal is a Terror. But this same Mangal is very kind to the poor, helpless and orphans. He gives free foods and medicines to the needy. He is treated like God by the downtrodden people.

he accidentally comes to know about a sex racket, in which the main criminal head of the Racket’Seth ji'(Heeralal) trades poor good-looking girls who are helpless.A chance meeting with Rama(Shyama),and he comes to know of a plan to deport few girls to dubai for immoral purpose. Seth ji also tries his hand at one of the girls when mangal appears there and kills him, setting the girls free. Chhabili, Katari and other girls call him their brother. But the ruthless police arrest him, make a case and send him to 7 yrs’ jail.

When he comes out he is welcomed with flowers and Rama is still waiting for him.

Premnath preferred roles which were like Robin Hood. He enjoyed such roles.

“Saara Jahaan Hamaara-1961” has seven songs. Four of them were written by Anjum Jaipuri and one by Kaamil Chaandpuri. Lyricist name for one song is not mentioned in HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970).

Going through the song-titles doesn’t ring any bell for me. I only find one song a little familiar one which is ‘ye phoolon ka gajraa, ye mera singaar’. However it seems that all the other songs of this movie are ‘new’ to me.

Here is the list of songs of this movie:-

SNo Song Title Lyricist Singer/s Posted On
01 Haaye main mar gayin Khawar Zamaan Sudha Malhotra
02 Yahaan jo jhhoothh bolega wahi noton se khelega Not mentioned Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi
03 Dil bechten hain, jigar bechten hain Anjum Jaipuri Shamshad Begam, Mahendra Kapoor, chorus
04 Bhare hain aankh mein aansoo Anjum Jaipuri Asha Bhonsle, Mukesh 29.02.2012
05 Ye hain chaaku ye hai chhoori, ye hain kainchi … Anjum Jaipuri Asha Bhonsle
06 Ye phoolon ka gajraa, ye mera singaar Anjum Jaipuri Suman Kalyanpur 25.07.2013
07 Hai ye zameen hamaari wo aasmaan hamaaara Kaamil Chaandpuri Mukesh 22.07.2020

As mentioned above three songs from this movie have been posted on the blog earlier. This song is the fourth song from this movie to be posted on the blog.

This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. The song is picturised on Shyama (I guess). This song seems to be picturised near ‘Bombay Chowpati’. I cannot say if I can call it as ‘sales-pitch’ song or not. (?)

Lyrics are by Anjum Jaipuri.

Music is composed by Babul.

Below is brief information about music director Babul shared by our respected Shri Arunkumar ji, in his comments on the same song mentioned earlier above.

Syed Maqbul Babul was an assistant to Madan Mohan for a long time. His speciality was making melodious tunes.

Independently, he gave music to 5 films-

Chalis din-59
Mujrim kaun khooni kaun-65
Reshmi Rumal-61
Nakli Nawab-62 and
Sara jahan hamara-61

Many of his songs became famous,e.g. ‘ main deewaana mastana-Mukesh,40 din, Gardish mein ho taare-mukesh, reshmi Rumaal and ‘sarpe chunariya kaali motiyan wali’ etc.also ‘chheda jo dil ka tarana-rafi, Nakli Naqab.

He also acted as a Choreographer in the film ‘Ek baar muskura do’-1972.

After this he migrated to Pakistan and died there penniless in 1995.

He did a better and more fulfilling work as a jodi of Bipin-Babul.

Let us now listen to this song which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and is picturised on Shyama.

Lyrics for this song were sent by Prakashchandra.

Today’s song is from the costume/stunt film ‘Jungle King’ (1959). The film was made by Artists United, Bombay (the name reminds me of the famous Hollywood company ‘United Artists’). It was produced by a group calling itself ‘Four X’ (for reasons best known to them) composed of Morris, Akbar, Asghar and Haider. The director was Masood and the music was by the pair of Bipin-Babul. The cast was very interesting. It consisted of Shaaga, Haaydu (what strange names! Never heard them !!), Sheila Ramani, Anwar, Majnu, Kamal Mehra, Heera Sawant, Tun Tun, Kabban Mirza, Dambe, Doud, Badshah, Rampuri Mehmood, Elephant Laxmi and many others.

I have never heard such strange names of actors in any film. Shaaga, Haaydu, Dambe, Rampuri Mehmood ? Where did they get these people with such names ? That way, earlier also I have come across some queer names in stunt films, like Bajarbattoo, Chemist, Dhondu, Babu Fatty, Gareeb Nawab etc. Few years back, Dr. Surjit Singh ji had downloaded 7,000 names of actors who acted in Hindi films from 1931 to 2000, from an internet site, which is extinct now. He had put it on the RMIM forum from where I downloaded the list. But in the intervening times, with me changing my Laptop several times till today, the list was lost in transit from one Laptop to the next one. The point is there were many funnier names of actors in that list.

Old time artistes had no means of publicity like today. With TV, Social Media, WA, Fb, newspapers, glossy magazines etc, publicity is easier for modern actors. Old time actors were forgotten as soon as they stopped appearing in films. Today’s film ‘Jungle King’ (1959) is a special film because in its cast are 2 old time actors who were forgotten totally with the times. One was a heroine of the then leading heroes, who fell on bad times and accepted whatever films came her way. But wisely she got married and spent a rich and comfortable retired life. The other one was an occasional singer, who held an honorable post in All India Radio and his songs became a choice of critics in those days. Let us know more about them.

One was actress Sheila Ramani,  a forgotten name today, but most of us will remember her in Navketan’s ‘Taxi Driver’ (1954) where she was cast as Anglo-Indian club dancer – Sylvie. I also remember her as the leading lady in ‘Funtoosh’ (1956), also from the banner of Navketan. Sheila was born on 2-4-1931, in Karachi. She was selected as Miss Mussoorie in 1948 and judged ‘Miss Simla’ in 1950. She made her debut as Champa, the femme fatale of ‘Badnam’ (1952), and revealed herself as a danseuse of charm in ‘Anand Math’ (1952). She was one of the few Sindhi actresses besides Sadhana, who made it big in Bollywood. She was mostly seen as an upper class mod girl in the 50s, a role she enacted to perfection all through that swinging era in films like V Shantaram’s ‘Teen Batti Char Raasta’ (1953), Sheikh Mukhtar’s ‘Mangu’ (1954), ‘Meenar’ (1954), ‘Railway Platform’ (1955), and ‘Funtoosh’ (1956).

Her uncle Sheikh Latif alias Lachchu was a famous Pakistani producer who produced films like ‘Pathan’ (1955), ‘Khizan Kai Baad’ (1955), ‘Darbar-e-Habib’ (1956) etc. Sheila visited Karachi – Pakistan on the request of her uncle, to play the lead role in Pakistani film ‘Anokhi’ (1956). The film was based on Hollywood’s ‘Fabulous Senorita’ (1952). “Gari Ko Chalana Babu, Zara Halkey Halkey Halkey, Zara Dil Ka Jaam Na Chhalkey” sung by Zubeda Khanum was the popular song from the film which did modestly good business in Pakistan. The movie’s great music was composed jointly by Timir Baran (a Bengali who came from India for this purpose) and Hassan Latif. Sheila went back to India and remained as a middle-of-the-range performer in Bombay films. In the later part of her career, she was reduced to obscure films with titles that sounded like ‘Jungle King’ (1959), and ‘The Return of Superman’ (1960) – one of the last films composed by Anil Biswas. In all, she acted in 24 films. Her last film was ‘Awaara Ladki’ (1967).

Sheila was very fond of sports, especially football and swimming. Ballroom dancing was a virtual addiction for her and she used to go out dancing as often as she could. Sheila was 5 feet four inches tall, and was so fastidious that any dress she would wear won’t be repeated for six months to come at least.

According to her son Rahul Cowasji, she retired from acting in 1962 and married  Jal Edi Cowasji on 31st March 1963. Part of her family that remained in Pakistan converted to Islam. She was a Hindu. She used to live in Mumbai with her husband Jal Cowasji (President of Bombay Dyeing) till 1981. They moved to Khartoum for 3 years and then to Sri Lanka for 3 years. After her husband’s death in 1984 she migrated to Australia on her own in the late 80’s and lived in Sydney and Surfers Paradise until health problems required her to return to India in the new millennium.  She used to live in her husband’s ancestral home in Mhow, near Indore (MP). She was frail and bed ridden for a few years before her death on 15-7- 2015.

Her favorite Hindi film of her career was ‘Taxi Driver’ (1954). Sheila was also the leading lady of India’s first Sindhi film after partition – ‘Abana’ (1958), in which young Baby Sadhna played her younger sister’s role.  [Thanks to Cineplot for some of the information in this Biosketch].

The other one was an  AIR announcer and an anchor. He was also a singer and an actor for a few films. His name was Kabban Mirza. Kabban Mirza’s name is known to very few people. He is one of those people who appeared like a comet and disappeared like a lightning. In his short stint with Hindi films, he acted in 2 films – ‘Jungle King’ (1959) (he was also the Assistant Director for this film) and ‘Murad’ (1961). He sang 1 song in the film ‘Captain Azad’ (1964) and 2 songs in the film ‘Razia Sultan’ (1983). He claimed to have sung a song “Is Pyar Ki Basti Mein” in a film called ‘Sheeba’,  without getting credited. No film with the name ‘Sheeba’ is traceable, but a song with the same mukhda is found in the film ‘Jungle King’ (1959), credited to Suman Kalyanpur and Babul with chorus. We don’t find a third voice in this song. It is possible that the film ‘Sheeba’ was left incomplete and the same song was used in the film ‘Jungle King’ (1959) with Babul as the male singer.

The question is why Kabban Mirza is remembered with such a meager contribution to film acting and singing ? The answer is because of his deep voice. Mirza who briefly flirted with the film world, left a lasting impression with his songs for producer-director Kamal Amrohi’s epic, ‘Razia Sultan’.

The songs — “Aayee Zanzeer Ki Jhankar Khuda Khair Kare” and “Tera Hijr Mera Naseeb Hai” — rendered in Mirza’s deep voice, were filmed on the slave-warrior character of Yaqut played by Dharmendra in the film.

Mirza was picked out after Amrohi auditioned dozens of singers in his search for a unique voice to suit the character of the slave-warrior. The film’s music director, Khayyam, reminisces: ‘‘Kamal Saab was a perfectionist. He called over 50 singers for a voice test, but remained unconvinced. Then someone suggested Kabban Mirza who was also a popular nauhaa khan (one who sings elegy for Imam Hussain’s martyrdom during Muharram). Kamal Saab’s search ended with Mirza.’’

Overnight his popularity soared. Mirza got a few more singing offers, including for BR Chopra’s ‘Nikaah’ (1982), but his preoccupation with radio came in the way. ‘‘His voice had a unique bass, unheard of in the industry,’’ says poet-lyricist Nida Fazli who penned a song for Razia Sultan.

Kabban Mirza was born in 1937 in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. He belonged to the  Siddi community. This is a community that migrated from Central Asia/North Africa, during the time when India was ruled by Muslim dynasties. These people were brought in as slaves in the courts of the rulers of Delhi, Lucknow and other kingdoms in North India. They are also known as ‘Habshi’. It is curiously incidental that Yaqut, the slave in the court of Razia Sultan, also belonged to this ‘Habsh’ community. It sounds almost providentially ordained that the two people, separated by more than seven centuries – the original persona, and the singer who would sing for that historical character in a film, belong to the same original ethnic community. (Another very well known personality of Indian cinema belongs to this community – His real name was SYED HASSAN ALI ZAIDI. His family used to call him MIJJAN Miyan and screen name was Kumar, the actor who played the role of the sculptor in the film ‘Mughal e Azam’ (1960)).

The child in Kabban took to music and singing very early. He was drawn to the ‘nauhaa’ style of singing – the traditional ‘marsiaa’ and ‘taaziadaari’ singing on the solemn occasion of Muharram. It is noted that the child Kabban used to practice his singing with his head inserted inside a ‘matka’ (earthen pot).

As he grew up, he was recognized as a very impressive and inspiring ‘nauha-rubaan’ – a singer of traditional Muharram renderings. His voice caught the attention, and he got his break with All India Radio, in the music department. This phase of his life is not well documented, no details are available about his training in classical music and who his teachers were. But his depth of knowledge about the detailed nuances of classical ragas is well acknowledged in his presentations of the radio program ‘Sangeet Sarita’. He anchored this program for many years. He would play select film songs based on Hindustani classical music, and then described in great detail the classical basis, the raag and its variations, the sur, the taal, and their interplay. He garnered a good measure of fan following for this program.

He had joined AIR in Lucknow, but he was soon transferred to Bombay station, where he would take on the anchor role for such noteworthy programs as ‘Hawa Mahal’, ‘Sangeet Sarita’ and ‘Chhaaya Geet’, for many years. There is some mention that he was approached to sing for music director Ravi in BR Chopra’s ‘Nikaah’ (1982), but apparently his association with AIR and his popularity as the anchor of mainline radio programs, came in the way of his further association with the world of films.

The two songs of ‘Razia Sultan’ became very popular in their time – the record sales were impressive. But as destiny would have it, this rise in popularity was accompanied by the most unfortunate health news for Kabban Mirza. He was detected with cancer of the larynx. This was a stroke of extreme bad luck from which he could never recover. His voice and his throat were his vital and essential assets. And that is where fate struck its most unkind blow. He went into prolonged treatment, but eventually he had to be operated upon. The year was 1993. He recovered from surgery and returned home. Thankfully, the malady seemed to be in remission, but then never got to use his voice for any serious and significant assignments.

Mirza, who was admitted to Jaslok Hospital on May 9 after he complained of cough and neck pain, came back home minus his once-famous voice. The tracheotomy tube inserted in his windpipe allows him to breathe, not speak. ‘‘He was diagnosed with throat cancer and treated 10 years ago also. But its relapse has shattered us. He won his bread and our happiness through his voice. Now he has lost that very voice,’’ bemoans Rifat, Mirza’s daughter.

The respite from the physical predicament lasted for a decade. The problem reared its painful head once again, and in May/June 2003, he had to undergo another surgery that resulted in the removal of a significant part of his larynx, leaving him practically with no sound in his throat. His vocal communications were reduced to very limited rasping utterances at the best. This regrettable fate for someone who had once been honored with the Golden Voice Award by the AIR. He reportedly died in June 2006.

Blog Day :

5111 Post No. : 17054

———————————–
This Week, That Year – 11
———————————–
10Jul – 16Jul, 2012

Wow wo
Those were the days, I am sure Atul ji would be remembering with relish. Or may be, he may himself not be believing the pace that was the norm in those days, This week, 10 years ago saw a whopping 46 songs posted. That works out to be an average of a tad over 6.5 songs per day. Ah yes, those were days.

And talking about ‘those were the days. . .’, I came across this very interesting exchange in the comment section of the first song of that week. The post was number 6206, the first one to be posted on the 1453rd day of the blog. The featured song is “Na Wo Hamse Judaa Honge” from the 1949 film ‘Dulaari’. A reader, identifying himself as simply MZ, posted this comment.

My first comment on this site.

You would be lucky to get 10 good songs in a year these days but in the forties and fifties, you could get 10 good songs in a movie such as this one. Just think of Naushad’s movies like Rattan, Anmol Ghadi, Andaz, Babul, Dulari, Uran Khatola, Deedar, Dastaan, Baiju Bawra, Shabab etc and it is staggering how he could come with so many gems in one movie.

Also going through your site, I see that in 1949 the following all time great musicals released – Shair, Paras, Namoona, Dulari, Mahal, Barsaat, Andaz, Bazaar, Lahore ,Badi Bahen, Dillagi, Chandini Raat, Shabnam, Patanga, Ek thi Ladki, Zevrat, Chakori, Jal Tarang, Raat ki raani, Laadli.

How I envy those who lived during those times !!!

To this, Atul ji had responded,

Those were different days indeed.

Ah yes, surely, indeed those were different days. 46 songs in a single week. . .

I return to the numbers game and the review of the postings from that week. The following table contains the day by day information of the posts from that week.

In these 46 posts, three films were repeated. Two films are from 1949 – ‘Chaandni Chowk’, two songs, and ‘Dulaari’, three songs. The third movie repeated that week is the 1976 film ‘Laila Majnu’, two songs, This works out to be 42 different films that got showcased that week.

The distribution by decade preference is as follows,

1930s  –  1
1940s  –  9
1950s  –  15
1960s  –  13
1970s  –  6
1980s+ –  2

As always, the distribution is obviously weighed down in the decades of 50s and 60s.

That week, fifteen films had made their debut, and one film – ‘Dulaari’ from 1949 was Yippeee’d. Ah well, three songs of that film during the week.

Of the 42 films that were featured that week, 21 films have since been Yippeee’d. Of the remaining 21 films that are still pending, the film ‘Taatar Ka Chor’ from 1955 is waiting for one last song, but that one appears to be untraceable. So this film is tagged as Yc – conditionally Yippeee’d.

A major milestone reached that week was the 400th guest post by yours truly. The post for the song “Main Hoon Atom Bomb” from the 1960 film ‘Dr Shaitaan’, published on 10th July that year, was my 400th post on the blog.

Today I present one more song of the unreleased film ‘Salaam e Mohabbat’ from the 1950s. This film had made its debut 10 years ago on 10th of July. The song posted was the iconic Talat Mehmood rendition of “Main Tujhko Agar Ik Phool Kahoon”. The song coming on board today is another enchanting melody by the music director duo Bipin Babul. The words are from the pen of Anjum Jaipuri and the singing voice is Sudha Malhotra.

As I was searching for the song to go along with with this post, I came across this wonderful song. It has been sitting in my collection all the while but I am hearing it for the first time today.

Yes, those were the days. Those were the days that not only the top rung music directors produced great songs in their films, even the lesser known and lesser heard music directors like Bipin Babul came up with enchanting melodies. Melodies that were lost to the listening public – unreleased films and released but unsuccessful films otherwise.

Those certainly were the days. And it is for this reason that period is called the Golden Age of the Hindi film song – melody was surely ruling the minds of the creators of songs of that era.

Listen to this song, and wonder. . .
