To continue with Rafi’s songs, here is a Fun song from film GUL-E-BAKAVALI-1963. It is shot on 3 comedians, Maruti, Sunder and Kumud Tripathi. The song situation is, these are three half-mad Princes, who have lost their way in a jungle. Hungry and thirsty, they eat the fruits of a tree-which is a Magic Tree. The fruits convert them to Girls. Demons appear and order them to dance and sing…
Fantasy stories and Fairy tales have been enchanting masses for centuries. This is because everybody wants a magic which will make him happy, seeking a solace in such stories. For several centuries such stories have been invoking the child in a man.
GUL-E-BAKAVALI or the magic flower of the Bakavali Tree is supposed to do many things which are unimaginable. let us see the history of this story which has mesmerised the film producers for many years.
Gul-e-Bakawali is a popular medieval romance in many versions. The seventeenth-century poet Nawazish Khan was perhaps the first to write a Bangla version of Gule Bakawali, a story in verse about the love of Prince Tajulmulk for the fairy Bakawali. The Sprinter catalogue records an Urdu Gule Bakawali written in verse in 1625. In 1722, Sheikh Izzatullah, a Bengali, wrote a prose version, Tajulmulk Gule Bakawali, in persian. It is not known on which version Nawazish Khan based his poem.
There were several variant versions of Gule Bakawali, such as the poetic versions by Muhammad Mukim (1760–70), Muhammad Ali, Munsi Ebadat Ali (1840), Umacharan Mitra (1834), and Abdus Shakur, and the prose version by Bijaynath Mukhopadhyaya (1904). Kedarnath Gangopadhyaya wrote a play based on the story in 1978. Ebadat Ali’s Gule Bakawali is a dobhasi puthi.
The story was also popular in Urdu. Thus, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Munsi Nehalchand Lahori wrote a prose version titled Mazhabe Ishq (1803), and Dayashankar Nasim wrote a masnavi (poem) called Gulzare Nasim (1835).
* Gul-e-Bakavali was the first picture with the same subject as Silent film in 1924 directed by Kanjibhai Rathod and produced by Kohinoor flms. It starred Jamna, Khalil, Fatma Begum, Noor Mohamed, Sabita Devi, Sultana, Usha Rani and Zubeida.
* The story was made as Silent film again in 1930 (Starring Vishnu, Gulab .. Dir Mohanlal Shah)
* Gul-e-Bakavali was made as Hindi films five times in 1932 ( starring Ashraf Khan, Zaibunnisa.. Dir Anand Prasad Kapoor), 1947 ( Starring Feroz Dastur,Menaka, Rabab, Sanober..Dir Rustom Modi), 1956 ( starring MG Ramachandran,Varalaxmi, Rajkumari…Dir Ramanna TR), 1963( starring Jairaj, Nishi.. Dir Jugal Kishore) and 1982( starring Feroz Khan , Amjad Khan … Dir Ravi (Kant Nagaich )..
* The story was pictured earlier in Telugu in 1938 with title Gulebakavali directed by Kallakoori Sadasivaravu and starring B. Jayamma. and again pictured as Gulebakavali Katha in 1962 (starring NT Ranarao , Jamuna, Nagaratnam .. Dir Kamalakara Kameshwara Rao)
* There are two Tamil versions, one from mid 30’s by Soundararajan (Tamilnadu Talkies fame!) and another version in 1955 , directed and produced by T. R. Ramanna and starring M. G. Ramachandran, T.R. Rajakumari and G. Varalakshmi…
The earlier Punjabi version was released in 1938 (*Baby Noorjehan , Ajmal , M Isamil … Dir Barkat Mehra) …
In Pakistan the story was pictured in 1961 (Ilyas Kashmiri, Jamila Razzaq .. Dir Munshi Dil .. Md Safdar Hussain ).
This 1963 film featured Jairaj and Nishi in the lead. NISHI KOHLI is the wife of the actor Rajkumar Kohli and mother of Armaan Kohli, the young actor. Not very beautiful and an ordinary actress, Nishi debuted in RAILWAY PLATFORM-1955 in a secondary role. Very soon she became heroine of many Stunt, Fantasy and action C Grade films. She acted in about 50 odd films before retiring. Recently she was seen on TV at Dara Singh’s funeral, with her husband.
P.Jairaj, however, was a unique personality. Born to a very rich Zamindar of Kareemnagar in Telangana area, he was educated in the best college of Hyderabad. He did not have to do much struggle in his life, due to his Muscular and Handsome physique. he started his film career with a silent movie “Triumph of Love”-1930, based on Prisoner of Zenda. In this film he did a double role. Perhaps he is the only actor in the world making a debut with a double role. After doing 12 silent films, his first talkie film Shikari appeared in 1932, in which he did the role of a Budhist Monk. His first hit film was Bhabhi-1938 and then there was no looking back. In the film industry he was known as the most civilised gentleman. Despite spending so many years here, he had no disputes nor any affairs, though he worked with every top actress of his times. He worked in about 170 films, which included some Marathi and Gujarati films also. His last film,” Raaz” was released in 2004. Thus he is probably an actor with the longest active film career of 70 Years !
being born into a respectable rich family he had many top connections. Sarojini Naidu was his Aunt. In the last phase of his career he was active in the ‘Cine Actors’ Association’ along with other Telugu artistes like Chandrasekhar and Waheeda Rehman.
He was awarded ‘ Dadasaheb Phalke Award” in 1980.
One very interesting point about Jairaj.
In his early career the hero’s had to sing their own songs, as Playback had not arrived till then. It was only Jairaj, in the whole Hindi Film Industry, who never sang a single song in any film. He simply could not sing at all ! Once a producer insisted that come what may Jairaj must sing a song in his film.he was ready to pay hugh amount for that. jairaj rehearsed for a month and sang one song in the film ‘ PATIT PAVAN” or ‘Ahilyodhar’-1933. However, the producer too could not tolerate Jairaj’s song and that song was ultimately removed from the film !!!
Till the film Bhabhi-1938, there were no songs for the hero in his films.
Today’s song is sung by Rafi, S.Balbir and Surinder Kohli. For many people this name may be a new one. so let know more about Surinder Kohli.
Surinder Kohli was born in 1937 in Lahore. He was educated in Gaziabad-UP and came down to Bombay to become a singer, when he was just 25 yrs old. Nishi Kohli was his relative and with her help,he got a break and he sang first time in GUL-E-BAKAVALI. Subsequently he sang in some other films like, Ek Din ka Badshah, Toofani Takkar, Phool aur Insaan, Rifle Girl, Cricketer etc- in 11 films in all. When songs stopped coming he became a Music Director and gave music to C grade and Dharmik films. His first film as a Music Director was Phool aur Insaan-1976. he gave music to some 20 insignificant films. When films stopped coming he turned to cutting devotional albums in various languages and at last,in this he was extremely successful. So far more than 40 of his albums have come in Hindi, Punjabi, Gujrat, Marathi, Kannada, Bhojpuri Oriya etc. he gave music with Lalit sen,Arvind Jha etc.
GUL E BAKAVALI-1963 was a Jugal prodction film , produced and directed by Jugal Kishore. The music was by Hansraj Behl for 7 songs and the lyrics were by Prem Warbatany,Gulshan Bawra, Shyam Ralhan, Naqsh Lyllpuri and Noor Devasi. The cast included Jairaj, Nishi, Sunder, Sapru, Tiwari, Nazi etc. The story of the film was….
Long long ago a king was blessed with a son to his second wife, but the astrologer has warned him that if he sees his son’s face before he is 28 years, the king will go blind. So the king sends his queen and the new born out of kingdom. They go and settle in a jungle where the prince grows up. His name is Taj ul Mulk (Jairaj). After 26 years the king and his soldiers are passing through a jungle where this prince is living. By chance the king sees him and suddenly he loses his eyes. He realises that it is his son. The queen also comes there. The Raj jyotishi tells that only the flower of magic tree Bakavali or Gul-e-bakavali can bring back king’s sight. One condition is that only his son should bring it.
The king has 3 sons from his first queen (Sunder, Kumud Tripathi and Maruti), but they are useless. However they promise the king that they will bring the flower and set out in its search. Taj ul Mulk also goes searching for it.
Once Taj and the three other sons meet and they tie Taj with ropes, loot all his money and leave him like that for jungle animals to eat. The princess(Nishi) of state Bakavali is flying on her magic carpet with her friends, when she sees Taj. They get down and release him. Taj and princess fall in love and immediately sing a song or two to solidify the ties.
The Princess promisses Taj to get him the magic Flower. While she is bringing the flower, the 3 evil sons steal it and run away. The princess is turned into a stone statue. When Taj learns about it, he follows the 3 Princes and gets the flower, bring the Princess to Human life and also brings back the King’s site.
All is well that ends well.
Now let us enjoy this Fun song….

Shahzaadon se bani shahzaadiyaan

ye mujhe kya hua re
kya pata re jaane kyun
mahchal raha hai aaj dil mera re
pyaar ki
dagar pe koi tujhe le chala re
kaun hai
wo kaun hai hamen bhi to bata
kya hua
ye mujhe kya hua re
kya pata re jaane kyun
mahchal raha hai aaj dil mera re
