It is believed that one needs to train hard and later work hard to become anything in life. But in India, people try to avoid hard work and want to succeed overnight. People trying to use “approach” to please higher ups-be they top officials or gods, instead of working to qualify for the job, is common.

The last two weeks of December are usually relatively busy weeks for me. I say “relatively” only in the context of the rest of the year for me, which is reasonably relaxed. My generally lazy nature gets a thorough jolt and wake-up call, in these last two weeks.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 19
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

There is a film from 1969 – ‘Tumse Achhaa Kaun Hai”. This film has a classic song, Rafi Sb singing for Shammi Kapoor, that has not yet made it to this blog.  (Yes, I am surprised too 🙂 ).  The mukhdaa of the song is an animated yet a resigned expression of helplessness – so many ladies to be loved, whom should I love – “Kis Ko Pyaar Karoon, Kaise Pyaar Karoon”.  The situation is not too different, when I am trying to select a song for posting here.  Atul ji mentions a specific requirement, and as I sit down to choose a song according to that, I find myself in the same quandary – “Kis Ko Post Karoon, Kaise Post Karoon – Ye Bhi Hai, Wo Bhi Hai. . .”.

To continue with Rafi’s songs, here is a Fun song from film GUL-E-BAKAVALI-1963. It is shot on 3 comedians, Maruti, Sunder and Kumud Tripathi. The song situation is, these are three half-mad Princes, who have lost their way in a jungle. Hungry and thirsty, they eat the fruits of a tree-which is a Magic Tree. The fruits convert them to Girls. Demons appear and order them to dance and sing…

Today (8 march 2013) is the International women’s day. When I looked up, I find that this day is being celebrated as International women’s day since 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace.

You must have heard the famous quotation,”Politics is the last resort of a scoundrel”. Though it is not true in ALL cases,it is used since long.

Similarly, the last resort of young boys who ran away from homes to Bombay in the 30s and 40s (and may be even today) was Hindi Films. For a growing Film industry there was a need for actors, singers, writers, technicians etc. Quantity was always available but quality was questionable. This field did not attract the educated gents from good families. So, whenever any educated i.e. a Graduate joined the industry, he was most welcome and he too would flaunt his degrees proudly. Thus you had a Lyricist named Moti,B.A. and Miss Kamal,B.A. in those days.

Luteraa (1965) is a musical bonanaza that boasts of absolutely fabulous music by Laxmikant Pyaarelal, who had just arrived on the music scene two years prior. All the songs in this film are veritable gems. In all seven songs are present in this film, all penned by Anand Bakshi. All the songs are dance songs, all songs are in female voices. Yes, interesting that there is not a single song in a male voice. Of the total seven songs, six of them are in Lata ji’s voice. As mentioned all are dance numbers, four of them performed by Nishi, who is the leading lady in this film, one by Helen and one by Bela Bose. All these six songs are already present on this blog.

A wonderful “searching-for-a-lost-one” song. The movie is Chaalis Din (1959) with a reasonably good set of actors, i.e. Premnath, Shakeela, Nishi, KN Singh, Maruti, Shammi, Chaman Puri, Kuckoo etc. This particular song is picturized on Shakeela as the main singer on screen, supported by Shammi and Maruti. Maruti looks very different and somber, unlike his comical sidekick roles that he has played in many movies of Dara Singh, Sheikh Mukhtar etc.

“Kyaa ye Bombay hai ?” (1959) is as obscure a movie as any. This C grade movie had Maruti and Nishi in lead roles.
