Do dinon ki hai kahaani

Posted on: August 4, 2013

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This is a Duet by Kishore Kumar, Anup Kumar and chorus from film-HUM DO DAKU-1967.

KISHORE KUMAR (4-8-1929 to 13-10-1987) was a colourful, multifaceted and interesting personality. You can find actors who sang song, actors who gave music, actors who directed films, you can even find actors who sang and gave music, but KISHORE KUMAR was the only person who acted, sang, composed music, produced and directed films, wrote Lyrics, screenplay and stories and edited films. For one man to do all these things successfully is nothing short of a Wonder. I do not think that there is any other person in the whole world of Cinema, in any country, who handled all these activities with aplomb and expertise !

Though Kishore wanted to become a singer, he got his first break as an Actor in Shikari-1946. Then he became a singer/Actor and may be from late 60s(except his own films) he remained only as a Singer.

I personally like Kishore as a Singer-Actor in his films of 50s. Though he did act in films in the 60s, he started achieving his ambition of getting recognised as a Singer rather than an Actor.

Hindi Film Period of 1970 to 1985 is aptly called “The Kishore Kumar Era”. In this period alone, he sang in 764 films, a total of about 1800 songs. It is of course a moot question how many of these really stood the test of the times. The answer is ” FEW”. No doubt his songs achieved popularity but only for a period of 5-6 months, after which they were forgotten.

Almost all the ” Golden Collection” records of Kishore Kumar, which were brought out by H M V contained his songs from 1948 to 1960.

During the period of 1970-1985, Kishore’s songs came out like a factory producing goods at a speed. In many interviews in the 80s, Kishore Kumar regretted that he had to sing such songs ! He once narrated that he would receive a phone call from a composer that in such and such a studio on such and such a date, his song recording is fixed. on the appointed day and time at the studio, he would get his cheque, song Lyrics and the Tune and was asked to take just one hour for own rehearsals-if he wanted. What would be the quality of songs ?

His best singing period was 1954-1958. Films like Naukari, Pehli jhalak, Pehli Taarikh, Munimji, Funtoosh, Paying guest, Barish, New Delhi, Asha, Nau do gyaarah, Chalti ka naam gaadi, etc gave satisfaction to him and his fans too, because these songs are evergreen. One of my most favourite songs from this period is Asha-Kishore duet of Funtoosh- ” Hum ne kisi pe dorey daalne hai”.

History recording in Hindi movie is in such poor state that no statistics of any singer is credible enough. By one estimate, Kishore sang above 2500 songs in his career.

A lot has been said and written about Kishore, discussing his acting, singing and his eccentricities. Bombay film industry was full of stories of Kishore’s strange behaviour, but little has been said or written about his Genius in composing music for his films.

Kishore first gave music to ” Jhumroo “-1961, mainly due to the insistence of Shankar Bannerjee, the producer and Director of the film. Shankar da had full faith in his capabilities, having heard Bangla songs composed by Kishore. There were some excellent songs in Jhumroo like, koi Humdum na raha, main hoon Jhumroo and Thandi hawa etc. After this film, Kishore was upset that he was not recognised as a good composer. He then produced a serious film ‘ Door gagan ki chhaon mein”-1964. It had even better songs.

He went back to his comfort zone and made “Hum do daku “-67, a comedy film with brother Anup kumar. its songs were just o k. Again a serious film was made by him ‘Door ka Raahi’-1971 with very good songs. He was invited to Madras by A.V.Films, to compose songs for ” Zameen Asmaan”-1972. he made ” Badhati ka naam dadhi’-1974, a comedy film and made I S Johar, Maruti, Bhagwan and Sunder to sing in its song. He also gave comedy roles to K N Singh and Bhappi Lahiri.

In 1978 he made ‘Shabash Daddy” with Yogita Bali and Amit kumar. After divorcing Yogita, he made ‘ Chalti ka naam zindagi ‘-1981 and then a songless film ‘ Door waadiyon mein kahin’-1982.

His unreleased films were Mamta ki chhaon mein, Pyaar ajnabi hai, Neela Asmaan, Band master chic chic boom, Dinoo ka Deenanath and Jamuna ke teer.

In all these 15 films where he gave music, none of the songs were shadowed by any composer’s style. this showed his genius and individuality in music field. He was basically a serious person and made good serious movies. He was branded as a Comedian and the producers wanted him to act and sing comedy songs.

Kishore Kumar’s speciality was his ‘ YODELLING ‘, which he learnt from the Austrian record collection of Anup kumar. Some claim that music director JIMMY taught him how to yodell first (Ref- dustedoff)

Undoubtedly, he was a versatile singer. He is the only singer who has sung two songs in films in male and Female voice-
1. Bainya chhodo balam-Rangeeli-1952 and
2. Aake seedhi lagi-Half Ticket-1962

Kishore sang 327 duets with Lata, as against 440 duets of Lata – Rafi.

In 1969, after Rajesh Khanna sang in his voice in Aaradhana, he sang for Rajesh khanna in 91 films. There were 32 films where Rajesh Khanna, R D Burman and Kishore Kumar combined.

Between 1970-1987 Kishore was the highest paid male singer.

Kishore died on the Birthday of his brother,Ashok Kumar.

Film HUM DO DAKU-1967 was produced, Directed by Kishore Kumar and the composer was also Kishore Kumar. All 5 songs were written by Shailendra.
The story of the film was-

Mannu(Kishorev Kumar) and Jaggu(Anup kumar) are brothers. they venture out to discover the treasures of Mohenjodaro and Taxila, in their old car-a Ford Toner-1928 model car named ‘ Champion’. They lose their way and stray into the dacoit infested jungle of Chandanpur. They are caught by dacoit Guru ghantal’s men. Gurughantal is happy to see their singing and dancing and makes them his team member. They are given the task of kidnapping the 2 princesses Ranjana and Anjana from Chandanpur. When they reach Chandanpur palace, they meet these girls and instead of kidnapping, they fall in love and spend time in singing love songs. When they see the maharaja they are surprised to see his striking resemblance to Gurughantal. After waiting for few days,Gurughantal comes to Chandanpur and takes away both girls with plans to get them married to his assistants Samar Singh and Amar Singh.

To rescue them, Jaggu and Mannu take the maharaja with them and come to the dacoit’s hide out. The brothers are caught, but Maharaja decieves the dacoits in the disguise of Gurughantal. Meanwhile the Army reaches there and in the final funny fighting, Gurughantal and other dacoits are arrested. All come back to the palace and Jaggu and Mannu get married to Ranjana and Anjana.

Here is a song from this film in which Kishore and Anup Kumar feature along with the chorus.

Lyrics

Do dino ki hai kahaani
zindgaani ji to le
umm
haan
aag hai to aag ko hi
karke pani pi to le
umm
haan
do dino ki hai kahaani
zindgani ji to le
Aag hai to aag ko hi
karke pani pi to le
beewee wee wee wee
bawaa waa waa waa waa
beewee wee wee wee
bawaa waa waa waa waa

beeti so beeti
jaisi bhi beeti
aage ki soch zara
udta hua yeh waqt hai pyaare
aur hai yeh waqt bura
bigdi banale
sach se nibhale
dil se kisi ke
dil ko mila le
kaal to aakhira kaal hai lekin
hum bin hai aafat ke parkaale

do dinon ki hai kahaani
zindgani ji to le
aag hai to aag ko hi
karke paani pi to le

beewee wee wwee
bawaa waa wa waa
beewee wee wee wee
bawaa waa wa waa

hi hi
hi hi

lamba safar hai
manzil hai muskil
phir bhi na haarenge hum
chaahe jidhar se niklenge
apni raah sanwaarenge hum
bigdi banaale
sach se nibhaale
Dil se kisi ke
dil ko mila le
Kaal to aakhir
kaal hai lekin
hum bin aafat ke parkaale

do dino ki hai kahaani
zindgaani ji to le
aag hai to aag ko hi
karke pani pi to le

lalalalalalalalaa
hey
lalalalalalall

ghar ho ke baahar
jeevan ka bojha
milke Uthaayenge hum
aa aaa aa
chhote se dil ki chhoti si duniya
mil ke basaayenge hum
aa aaa aa
Bigdi banale
haay
sach se nibhale
haay
dil se kisi dil ko mila le
haay
kaal to aakhira kal hai lekin
hum bin aafat ke parkaale

do dino ki hai kahaani
zindgani ji to le
aag hai to aag ko hi
karke paani pi to le

This sounds like a very entertaining film. Trust Kishore Kumar to pep things up.
Even I liked Kishore Kumar best when he acted and sang in his own films.

Our tributes to the great Kishore Kumar !!
@ AD Sir – thanks for this enjoyable song, though light hearted song, it has some message also in it.
I had not heard nor read about this movie and some of the unrelased movies (noted above) of Kishore Kumar. I think Neela Aasman also have some good songs.

Arun ji,

Thanks for this rare combination song. Anoop Kumar’s outings as a singer are very rare, and in this film, he has two songs with his younger brother. His voice is also heard in the song “Baabu Samjho Ishaare” from ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ (1958), although it goes uncredited.

The post is so much full of information, as is always the case. 🙂

Thanks for the write up and intro to a wonderful song.
