Dil deewaana dil mastaana maane na

Posted on: August 24, 2013

The lines of this song “dil deewaana dil mastaana maane na” may remind most music lovers of the “Maine Pyaar Kiya” (1989) song that goes “dil deewaana bin sajna ke maane na”. The song “dil deewaana dil mastaana maane na” is not from that movie though. It is from a much older movie viz. “Aawaaz” (1956) and it is regarded as a timeless classic.

“Aawaaz” (1956) was a Mehboob Productions movie. It was directed by Zia Sarhadi. The movie had Rajendra Kumar, Nalini Jaywant, Usha Kiran, Zul Vellani, Anwar, N. Hussain, Mukri, Murad, Leela Chitnis, Jagdeep etc in it.

Five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is this sixth song from the movie. This nice and hummable song is sung by Talat Mehmood and Lata. Zia Sarhadi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Salil Chaudhary.

The song is picturised on Zul Vellani and Nalini Jaiwant. Zul Vellani who ? I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this actor who seemed to have played an important enough role in this movie, certainly important enough to lip sync a romantic duet with the heroine of this song.

Lyrics

dil deewaana dil mastaana maane na
lagi bujhaana bura zamaana jaane na
soona soona pehloo hai dildaar kahaan
bheegi bheegi raaton ka wo pyaar kahaan
ho o o o o
ho o o o o
dil deewaana dil mastaana maane na
lagi bujhaana bura zamaana jaane na
soona soona pehloo hai dildaar kahaan
bheegi bheegi raaton ka wo pyaar kahaan
ho o o o o
ho o o o o

raste mein teri meri pehli mulaaqaat huyi
ankhiyon se ankhiyon ki wo jo ik baat huyi
raste mein teri meri pehli mulaaqaat huyi
ankhiyon se ankhiyon ki wo jo ik baat huyi
ho o
usi meethhi baat se ye dil aabaad hai
usi meethhi baat se ye dil aabaad hai
ho o o o
ho o o o o

pyaar ka jo dukh uthhaaya
apna hi qusoor hai
tera koi dosh nahin
dil majboor hai
pyaar ka jo dukh uthhaaya
apna hi qusoor hai
tera koi dosh nahin
dil majboor hai
ho o
apna jahaan to apne haathon barbaad hai
apna jahaan to apne haathon barbaad hai
ho o o o o
ho o o o o
dil deewaana dil mastaana maane na
lagi bujhaana bura zamaana jaane na
soona soona pehloo hai dildaar kahaan
bheegi bheegi raaton ka wo pyaar kahaan
ho o o o
ho o o o
ho o o o
ho o o o

I am not very knoweldgeable like Atul ji, Anil Deshmukh ji and our other friends contributing to this blog. However, our friends will recall having seen the name of Zul Vellani among the casting credits in many movies of the decades of 50s & 60s. I think he was a member of IPTA, the organisation mainly favoured by the artists having a leftist leaning. He seemed to be a part of the team of Zia Sarhadi, K.A. Abbas, Balraj sahni, Chetan Anand, etc., in whose films he played bit roles (may be not as important as in Aawaaz). If my memory serves me right, I think the last time I had seen him in a film was in 1966 film, ‘Shahar Aur Sapna’ by K.A. Abbas.

Atul ji,
ZUL VELANI was an actor in films, stage and TV.
he was born on 5th October 1934 and died suddenly on 31-12-2010.
He acted in about 15 Hindi films during the 50s and 60s.
More than anything I remember Zul Vellani as a commentator in many Indian Govt. Documentary films, which were regularly shown just before any film in a Theatre in the 50s and 60s. he was one of the leading commentators for Films Division along with other luminaries like pratap Sharma etc.
He was actively into IPTA as mentioned in another comment. he even directed few Hindi films.
I remember writing about Zul Velani on this Blog.one or two years ago sometime, but am unable to trace it now.
he was very handsome and Manly looking with a resonant voice.
he was very popular amongst the Drama circle artists like Shabana Azmi,Faruk Shaikh,Pearl padamsee etc.
