Abhi Bhattacharya, a name that evokes an image of a staid and an unassuming personality. A leading man of 1950s, and a character actor for the rest of his career. An actor who would rarely be put forth to take command of a scene. A person whose presence on the screen would spell sincerity and forthrightness. A performer who was the first choice of producers for the role of Lord Vishnu, a role he has played in more than half a dozen films.
Remembering Abhi Bhattacharya today (11 september 2013), the twentieth anniversary of his passing away in 1993.
Born in 1921, he made his debut in 1947, in Bengali cinema with the film ‘Naukadobi’. He moved into Hindi films in 1952, with the film ‘Yaatrik’. In a career that lasted over four and a half decades, he played a variety of roles in almost 250 films. A choice for a teacher’s role or a priest’s role, he did not last very long as a lead actor.
‘Biraaj Bahu’ is a film from 1954 in which Abhi Bhattacharya has played the lead role opposite Kamini Kaushal. This film is produced by Hiten
Chaudhry and is directed by Bimal Roy. The cast of actors includes Kamini Kaushal, Abhi Bhattacharya, Shakuntala, Pran, Randhir, Manorama, Kammo, Bikram Kapoor, Baby Chand, Iftikhar, Moni Chatterji, Sarita Devi, Shivji Bhai, Maya Das, Dashrath Lal, Sharifa, Sailen Bose, Ravikant, Farooque, Dheer, Jagdish, Sharma, Jaani Bhai etc. The music for the six songs is composed by Salil Chaudhry, and the songs are penned by Prem Dhawan.
This song is a bhajan rendered by Hemant Kumar. Abhi Bhattacharya has performed it on screen. The scenario is a gathering in the temple on a festival occasion. In the video clip, one can also see Kamini Kaushal. Her solitude and expressions convey that she is waits for someone, and that someone is busy singing bhajans in the temple.
This bhajan is a fond memory from the radio listening days. The voice of Hemant Da makes it special. Listen and enjoy.
Song-Jhoom jhoom manmohan re (Biraaj Bahu)(1954) Singer-Hemant Kumar, Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Salil Chaudhary
Chorus
Lyrics
shyaam re
shyaam re. . .
ik pal daras dikha jaa
jhoom jhoom manmohan re
murli madhur sunaa jaa
jhoom jhoom manmohan re
murli madhur sunaa jaa
jhoom jhoom manmohan re
murli madhur sunaa jaa
jhoom jhoom manmohan re
murli madhur sunaa jaa
tere daras ke pyaase nainaa
ik pal daras dikha jaa
jhoom jhoom manmohan re
murli madhur sunaa jaa
gokul soonaa mathura sooni
soone brij ke jhoole
soone brij ke jhoole
bhool gayaa tu hum ko Mohan
hum na tujh ko bhoole
hum na tujh ko bhoole
phir panghat pe
jamuna ke ta’t pe
aa ke raas rachaa jaa re. . .
ae Ghanshyam
RadheyShyaam Ghanshyam
RadheyShyaam Ghanshyam
phir panghat pe
jamuna ke ta’t pe
aa ke raas rachaa jaa
jhoom jhoom manmohan re
murli madhur sunaa jaa
hum jaise to laakhon jag mein
tujh sa kaun hai daata
tujh sa kaun hai daata
tod ke saare naate hum ne
jodaa tujh sang naata
jodaa tujh sang naata
bhanwar mein naiyyaa
padi khiwaiyyaa
ab to paar lagaa jaa re. . .
ae Ghanshyam
RadheyShyaam Ghanshyam
RadheyShyaam Ghanshyam
bhanwar mein naiyyaa
padi khiwaiyyaa
ab to paar lagaa jaa
jhoom jhoom manmohan re
murli madhur sunaa jaa
jhoom jhoom manmohan re
murli madhur sunaa jaa
tere daras ke pyaase nainaa
ik pal daras dikha jaa
jhoom jhoom manmohan re
murli madhur sunaa jaa
jhoom jhoom manmohan re
murli madhur sunaa jaa
jhoom jhoom manmohan re
murli madhur sunaa jaa

Sudhirji,
Bhajan is excellent, but the actor falls short of even semblance of acting.
For me abhi to kabhi nahi. How he became an actor beats me.
