Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Hanste hanste jaana

Posted on: September 19, 2013

This song which is an NFS has been erroneously treated as a song from “Shanti”(1947) for long.

Sudhir Ji searched hard and long for this song and he managed to locate the original record of this song. From the label on this song, he discovered that this song was a private song and not a film song as has been erroneously mentioned all over internet.

When originally posted in the blog, we mentioned this song as a movie song. Now we will treat this song as an NFS. We will treat this match as an NFS putting its date tentatively as 1950 and its details other than the singers name as unknown for the time being.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

Song-Rotey rotey aaya moorakh hanste hanste jaana (Rafi NFS)(1950) Singer-Rafi

Usualy ‘afsana likh rahi hun’ in Dard-1947 by Uma devi is considered the first lyric that Shakeel wrote. But in 1947, Shakeel wrote lyrics in three films i.e Shanti and Natak besides Dard. Hence, it can’t be said with any degree of certainty that ‘afsana’ was the first lyric by the master lyricist. I am not an expert in this regard but common sense tells me that after getting the sky-high Dard fame, Shakeel might not have liked the idea of writing for an obscure film like Shanti under the baton of some obscure music director by the name of BS Singh. Even otherwise, a comparision of Shanti and Dard tends to indicate that Shanti might be older than Dard so far as Shakeel Badayuni is concerned. May Arunji throw light on it.

Atul ji, Avinash ji,

I came across a potential discrepancy as I am reviewing the blog records. This song at seems to have an identification problem. For one, the Geet Kosh clearly states that Rafi Sb has sung only one song in this film, and that song is “Jeevan Hai Anmol Musafir” at https://atulsongaday.me/2013/04/13/jeewan-hai-anmol-musaafir/.

I tried to search elsewhere, but this song does not appear anywhere in the Geet Kosh. Of course the possibilities of it being omitted for various reasons can exist.

I checked with my collector friend. We were not able to locate this song anywhere in the 1940s, 50s or 60s. Finally, after some effort, my friend is able to trace this song, but it turns out to be a non-film private song.

I also referred to the excel file of 5,000+ songs by Rafi Sb. This file is originally compiled by Muveen Bhai and has been available on the internet for quite some time. I received it through a friend almost two years ago. Even this file does not indicate any song for film ‘Shanti’ (1947) with the title “Hanste Hanste Jaana. . .”. In fact this file does not list any song with this title.

I did some search online and came to following conclusions.
a. There is no dearth of blind copiers – who simply copy data from other sources and continue to perpetuate errors. I found a few more sites, where this song is listed as being from film ‘Shanti’ (1947). I found one more site where this song is listed. At this site, the song is listed for film ‘Hua Savera’ of 1948. Another misleading information since there is no Rafi song in this film.

b. There is no specific information available to associate the song “Hanste Hanste Jaana” to any film.
I find one more detailed answer to this question on the web site ‘Hamara Forums’. The individual has posted the following detail.

“There is only one song of Rafi in Shanti (1947), Jeevan Hai Anmol Musafir. A few years back when the song Hanste Hanste Jaana was discovered, a number of members tried to locate its film but the search proved to be futile. At that time, it was speculated that the song is a continuation of the Song from Shanti. However subsequently the Shanti song too was discovered and it is an entirely different song. Hanste Hanste Jaana is possibly a non-film song or one of those not listed in HFGK.”

Hence, clearly this song cannot be listed as song from film ‘Shanti’.

Atul ji,

I request you to make appropriate corrections to the post, so that the error is not further propagated due to our blog. As far as credible sources of information are concerned, this song is at best a non-film song at this time, until any more new information can be discovered.

Thanks and regards
Sudhir
