“Sarhad”(1960) was an Alankar Chitra Production movie. This forgotten movie had an unusual starcast, consisting of Dev Anand, Raagini, Suchitra Sen, Sajjan, Lalita Pawar etc.
Our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, Mr Arunkumar Deshmuh has all the details about this movie. Here is what he has to say about this movie:
SARHAD-1960 was a film which was different than the usual Dev Anand movies.The background and the role did not suit Dev Anand at all and the film did not click with audience.The saving grace was the music of C Ramchandra(assisted by Johnny Gomes and Datta Davjekar).
The film was produced by K.H.Kapadiya and directed by Shankar Mukherjee, who later directed many hits of Dev Anand like, Baarish, Banarasi Babu, Pyar Muhabbat, Mahal in addition to Jhumroo of kishore kumar and few others.
The screenplay was by Madhusudan Kalelkar, story by Ranjan Bose and dialogues by Vrajendra Gaur.
Amar (Dev Anand) runs away to the jungle when beaten unjustly by his father. He is found and brought up by a sardar of the jungle people. After growing up, Amar becomes sardar. He is tough, strict and cruel. He is called ‘Maalik’.
Gulabi(Ragini) the dancer loves him,Jagga, leader of a group loves Gulabi and hates Amar.
One day Amar’s father comes there with Mala(Suchitra Sen)-his adopted child. Amar refuses to go with him and father returns leaving Mala with Amar. The love blooms,which is resented by Gulabi and Jagga.
Mala tries to improve Amar’s nature. Gulabi and Jagga incite the tribal people and they revolt against Amar.
The rest of the story details how Mala helps him to quell the revolt and finally they both cross the Sarhad and enter the city for ever.
Two songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Today is the birth anniversary of Majrooh Sultanpuri (1 october 1919-24 may 2000). On this occasion, here is another song from “Sarhad” (1960). This song is sung by Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and chorus. It is picturised on Dev Anand, Raagini and others. Majrooh sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by C Ramchandra.
The picturisation shows Dev Saab dancing as well, which is an unusual sight as most followers of Dev Saab already know.
