“Gunda”(1969) was produced by Sushil Malik and directed by Mohammad Hussain for Smart Films, Bombay. This “social” movie had Shaikh Mukhtar,Sujit Kumar, Jayanthi,N.A.Ansari,Sham Kumar,Bela Bose,Uma Dutt,Satish, Mumtaz Begum, Helen, Bhagwan,Shakila Bano Bhopali,Sham Kumar,Shetty,Mohan Jerry,Sharifa,Shefali,Fatima etc in it.

“Gunda”(1969) had five songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the blog.

A poor quality video of the movie, with many deleted scenes is available online. Mr Sadanand Kamath jee, who covered the previous song from the movie in the blog, has tried to make sense of the movie from this video. Based on whatever video of the movie is available, he has deciphered the story of the movie as follows:

Madanlal (N A Ansari) is a businessman who depicts himself as a honest person in the society. However, in reality, he is a gangster involved in clandestine activities. Vijay (Sujit Kumar), his younger brother, is unaware of his brother’s gangster side of his activities. Shankar (Shaikh Mukhtar) a small gangster, is Madanlal’s right-hand man.

In one of his troubleshooting work, Madanlal assigns Shankar a work in which he has to rob a Seth ji who is travelling in a train carrying diamonds worth about Rs.15 lakhs. Shankar travels as a co-passenger in the train and robs him of diamonds by making him unconscious. Vijay, Seth ji’s fellow passenger returns to his berth and watches Shankar’s action. However, Shankar overpowers Vijay by hitting on his head. Vijay collapses on his berth and Shankar alights from the train at the next station.

Rekha (Jayanthi), who has run away from her house to avoid getting married to an old man her maternal uncle has arranged, boards the same train and occupies a seat in the same compartment in which Vijay is travelling. After knowing the pitiable condition of the girl, Vijay offers her accommodation in his house in which his mother (Mumtaz Begum) and brother (N A Ansari) are staying. He tells her to wait for him since he has to accompany Seth ji to the police station to lodge a FIR against a person who has robbed him. On return from the police station, not finding Rekha, Vijay returns home. He shares the events happened in the train with his brother, Madanlal.

In the meanwhile, two unscrupulous persons try to cone Rekha by offering her to take her to Ashram for her stay. Instead, she lands in Jaggu (Sham Kumar) house who runs a gambling den. Shankar saves her from Jaggu and brings her to his house which he shares with his friend, Madho (Bhagwan). Rekha stays with Shankar who treats her as a sister. In few days’ time after staying in Shankar’s house, Rekha comes to know the activities of Shankar which she resents. After a lot of persuasion, Shankar decides to give up his clandestine activities and over a period of time, he turns into a honest man.

One day, Vijay while driving in his car, sees Rekha and asks her as to why she has not waited for him. After knowing all the events with a couple of more meetings, Vijay and Rekha fall in love with each other. Shankar, who already knows Vijay as an upright person unlike his brother, Madanlal, approves their relation provided both gets married soon. But for Vijay, it would be difficult to convince his brother, Madanlal as he would not allow him to marry a poor and that too a runaway girl. Madho, works out a scheme under which Rekha would be introduced to Madanlal as London returned princess Rekha of Rajsathan. With this, Madanlal approves Vijay’s marriage with Rekha.

On the marriage day, Shankar’s maternal uncle attends the marriage as a guest and the truth comes out about Rekha who is not the princess but the real sister of Shankar who had been separated in their childhood after the death of their parents. Shankar reveals the true story but Madanlal is in no mood to listen to him. Instead, he cancels the marriage. Shankar now realises that a big gangster like Madanlal who moves in the society as a respectable person while he was a small gangster which he has given up could never be rated a respectable person in the society. Shankar takes a vow that from now onwards he would work for elimination of Madanlal’s high gangster status by sabotaging his clandestine activities.

Madanlal feels the absence of Shankar as his couple of clandestine activities result in failures, thanks to Madho who becomes Shankar’s informer to checkmate the plans. Madanlal decides to entrust such activities to Jaggu but he is also unsuccessful because of sabotage by Shankar and Madho. In the meanwhile, Vijay is depressed because even his mother has not supported him in his marriage with Rekha. Madanlal plays another trick to ween away Vijay from Rekha. He reveals that the person who robbed a passenger of diamonds worth Rs.15 lakhs was none other than Shankar who is a small gangster. Vijay goes to Shankar’s house to confront with him. Instead, he gets a shocked revelation that he has been working for Madanlal who is a much bigger gangster than him.

When the secret of Madanlal is out, it has now become Shankar versus Madanlal because the latter has abducted Rekha to prevent Shankar from informing the police about the clandestine activities of Madanlal. When Vijay comes to know about Rekha’s abduction, he confronts with his brother, Madanlal. In a three corner fights between Madanlal and Shankar on one hand and Madanlal and Vijay on other hand, Madanlal makes Vijay unconscious and goes to kill Shankar who would have been almost killed had Vijay had not brought the police who kills Madanlal before he has time to kill Shankar. Police takes the custody of Shankar for his past crimes, Before that, he takes the assurance from Vijay to take care of his sister, Rekha by marrying him. The film ends with the marriage ceremony of Vijay with Rekha with the blessing of Vijay’s mother.

Here are the details of the four songs that have been covered so far:-

Here is the fifth and final song of “Gunda”(1969) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Usha Mangeshkar. Anjaan is the lyricist. Music is composed by G S Kohli.

Unlike the other songs, whose videos are available, video of this song is missing. I cannot believe that such a lively song like this could have been deleted from the movie. My guess is that this song was there in the movie but it is deleted in the poor quality VCD available online that may have been copied from VHS tape where this song may have been missing/ damaged. The song sounds like a synchronised dance song performed by two female dancers.

I request our knowledgeable readers who may have seen this movie, to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

With this song, all the five songs of “Gunda”(1969) have been covered in the blog. This movie thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.
