‘Ramu Daada’ (1961) was a typical ‘B’ grade film produced and directed by B K Adarsh. The cast included Shaikh Mukhtar, Jaymala, Salim Khan, Sapru, Nilofer, Honey Irani, Chand Usmani, Rajan Haksar, C S Dubey, Sheila Vaz, Shakila Bano Bhopali etc.

The film’s producer, B K Adarsh (06/01/1925 – 10/10/1992) was born in Jodhpur as Brahad Kumar Nahata. According to IMDb, B K Adarsh started as Hindi film distributor for Rajasthan and MP circuits. Later, he expanded to film productions. As per his filmography, B K Adarsh directed his first film, ‘Maano Na Maano’ (1955). This was followed by ‘Teerth Yatra’ (1958) which he produced and directed and was the first film of the actress, Jaymala who later married him. During his filmy career, B K Adarsh produced and directed 17 films besides writing the story, screenplay and dialogues of some of the films he produced. Most of his films belong to mythology/religious and actions genre. He was married to Jaymala.

‘Ramu Dada’ (1961) was Salim’s second film and was paired with Jaymala. Salim was picked up by producer-director, K Amarnath when he was on a visit to Indore. For him, Salim looked like Hollywood actor, Tony Curtis. So, he decided to launch him in his big film project. However, after the box office set back in, ‘Kal Hamaara Hai’ (1959), K Amarnath was unable to launch him as a newcomer. Instead, Salim made his debut in his next film, ‘Baaraat’ (1960). In this film, Salim performed the role of the younger brother of lead actor, Ajit. But the film was not successful at the box office. Thereafter most of his roles were in ‘B’ grade films. He worked in a few ‘A’ grade films but he had only minor roles.

Salim Khan, in his multiple interviews, had revealed as to why he gave up the acting career and pursued the career as a writer. He realised that though he was good in explaining the characters to others, he lacked to naturally project himself on the screen. A chance meeting with Javed Akhtar, the clapper boy on the set of ‘Sarhadi Lutera’ (1966) got converted into a friendship and both decided to concentrate on writing for the films. The rest is history.

The story of the film is as under:

Ramu (Shaikh Mukhtar) is a notorious goon in his locality who stays with his younger sister Jamuna (Chand Usmani). She is fed up with anti-social activities and pleads for living a life of a honest man by getting some job. But he is adamant. One day, Ramu goes to the doctor to get first aid for a knife injury on his hand when a woman with her infant child comes to the doctor with emergency as the child is unconscious. But Ramu orders doctor to complete his dressing first. By that time, the child is dead and the woman curses Ramu for his insensitivity of the situation.

Ramu returns home and finds his sister lying on the floor immobilised due to a fall from the stairs. Her lower limbs get paralysed. Ramu suddenly remembers the woman with a child who had cursed him. He decides to reform himself by giving up his anti-social activities. He gets a job in the garage and over a period of time, he becomes the driver of a truck.

Ravi (Salim Khan) is an unemployed graduate who is a serious type of person. Once he had helped Rekha (Jaymala) when her horse cart went out of her control. After helping her, Ravi goes without having any conversation with her. He had also helped Ramu when his truck got struck in the middle of the road. Ravi gets a job as a driver with David (Rajan Haksar) who asks him to pick up the car from certain destination to bring to him. While doing so, the police chases the car as it was missing car which belonged to Rekha and was being used by David for his smuggling activities.

Ravi is taken in the police custody. Ramu comes to help him out. Police calls Rekha to the police station After seeing Ravi, Rekha withdraws her complaints of her missing car. On the contrary, she pays the bail amount for his release from the police. Ramu assures the police that since he knows David as his rival, he would drag him to the police.

After the bail, Ramu brings Ravi to his house and is surprised that Ravi did not even thanked Rekha. He tells him to meet her personally to thank her for helping him out of the mess. Ravi meets Rekha in her house to thank her. Rekha introduces him to her uncle, Rai Saheb (Sapru) and gets him employed in his office. Ravi and Rekha fall in love with each other. Rekha Ravi and Ramu Dada are not aware that Rai Saheb in reality runs a smuggling syndicate with his paramour Sitara (Nilofer) with the assistance of David.

Rai Saheb is not happy with Rekha’s love affair with Ravi. As per the assurance given to police, Ramu Dada helps police to confiscate a truck full of smuggled goods. However, David escapes from the truck. Ramu Dada finds him in a house. During their confrontation, David is shot dead by Rai Saheb from a distance. Police finds circumstantial evidence of Ramu Dada’s presence and he is arrested on the charge of killing David. However, he runs away from the police custody to find out the real killer of David.

There is some discontentment between Sitara and Rai Saheb on the money matter. She had tape recorded when Rai Saheb was boasting as to how he has killed two birds with one stone, meaning there by that he has killed David but Ramu Dada is charged with the murder of David. During his escape from police, Ramu Dada has been looking for some clue as to who may have killed David. Once he was on a visit to Rai Saheb’s house to clandestinely meet Ravi when he ears the conversation between Sitara and Rai Saheb about the killing of David. After some days, he meets Sitara and forcibly takes the cassette containing what Rai Saheb had said about killing David. Now, Rai Saheb is after Ramu Dada to retrieve the cassette.

Ramu Dada is on the run. Rai Saheb follows him in the car and gets back the cassette. Now Rai Saheb is on the run and Ramu Dada is chasing him in train, in boats and even in a flight. The police forces are alerted. They find Rai Saheb in the sea. Ramu Dada surrenders in the police station not before presenting the cassette which proves that the real killer of David was Rai Saheb. The court sentences Rai Saheb, the life imprisonment and 3-year imprisonment for Sitara as an accomplishment in his smuggling business. Ramu Dada gets a symbolic one-day imprisonment for escaping from the police custody because he has helped police to smash the smuggling syndicate. With this, Ravi’s misunderstanding about Rekha gets cleared and they are now united.

The film had nine songs (with one double-version) written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by Chitragupt. Six songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 7th song, ‘balmaa hansoge kaise nahee’ rendered by Lata Mangeshkar. The song is picturised on Jaymala who is coaxing Salim to smile because he is in a sombre mood.

The context of the song is that Ravi (Salim) is in a sombre mood when he meets Rekha (Jaymala) in a garden. The reason is that he has asked his boss, Rai Saheb (Sapru) for two days leave to search for Ramu Dada who has escaped from the police custody. His boss rejects his leave by saying that he would not like anyone in his office to be associated with a criminal. Instead, he can leave the job. Ravi is sure that Ramu Dada is innocent and he should help him. But at the same time, he cannot leave the job. It is on this situation he has come to meet Rekha who is not aware of the background and Ravi does not want to share his predicament with her.
