The Voice of Mukesh #41
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Ah, the good feeling of having met one small success. Friends and readers will remember from earlier posts in this series, that we are running short of three songs in the journey of completing all that Mukesh has sung for Hindi films. Well, that number reduces to two today. 🙂
And accompanying this good feeling of accomplishment, is also a feeling of gratitude. Gratitude for a good friend and a very sincere fan of Mukesh, who has so kindly shared this rare song to be posted. The gentleman is Pradeep Sharma, of Delhi. In fact he is the convener of a fan group named ‘Mukesh Smriti Kala Manch’, and regularly organizes music programs of Mukesh songs. Being in touch with other fans of Hindi film music, I was introduced to Pradeep ji well over a year ago. We have been in communication, and he shares with me the plans for his programs. And he has helped me on one occasion earlier also. Last November, when I was searching for the Mukesh –Sitara Devi duet “Mori Atariya Pe Aa Ja Ho. . .” from film ‘Dukh Sukh’ (1942), I had sent a request to him also. And he had obliged promptly.
Same on this occasion. A week back I had written to him about the three missing songs from my series of posts. And after some search, he has sent me this seemingly obscure song from the film ‘Pardesi Mehmaan’ (1948) that I have been now searching for some time. I whole heartedly thank Pradeep ji for his kind gesture, and his willingness to share.
‘Pardesi Mehmaan’ is a 1948 production from the house of Ranjit Movietone, directed by Aspi. The list of actors includes Kamal Kapoor, Husn Banu, Rajrani, Ghulam Mohammed, Sheikh Hasan, Abdul Rehman, Afghan Sandow, Azim, Bipin Gupta, Kaizer etc. The 11 songs in this film are from the pen of Pt Indra Chandra and the music is crafted by Hansraj Behl.
The year being 1948, the fires of the partition holocaust were still simmering, and the wounds of the people on both sides of newly drawn borders (on both East and West) were still very raw an very fresh. 1948 was the time when the memories of human ‘kaafilaas’ (caravans), of trains loaded with dead bodies, of family members missing or dead, of people uprooted from their land and made to flee with just the clothes on their backs – ah yes, even today these memories drive shivers in the spine. I am emotional about it, because both my parental families had suffered this fate, and were made to start their lives from scratch, all over again. Yes, the country was literally on fire – a fire that destroyed many things. Things that need not have been destroyed, had the so called leadership of this country stood united against the machinations of a divisive foreign invader. But that story, another day.
This song tells the story of this destruction, the misery, and the suffering that torched the lives of more than 2 crore human beings on both sides. This number is four times the number of the ‘holocaust’ that was perpetrated in Europe just a few years earlier by a brutal dictator. But in the books of history, this monumental tragedy is oh so lightly underplayed. The verses in this song are exhorting the young men to rise up and see the state of the country, and realize what has been done. The words are surely hard hitting, and a line says
so rahaa hai baagbaan
muskuraa rahi khizaan
‘That while the gardener sleeps peacefully, the winter has descended on the garden and has happily destroyed it’ – a telling indictment of the leadership that must share the responsibility of this human tragedy.
The pace of the song is pretty fast, and the singing pitch is also high. An unlikely arrangement for Mukesh to render. In fact a friend commented whether this voice is Mukesh at all. However, going by the Mukesh Geet Kosh records, this song is certainly rendered by Mukesh, albeit it being rendered in a manner that probably does not come naturally to him.
So one of the missing links in the series has now been found. And thanks once again to Pradeep ji for providing it. Listen to this obscure, rare, and an unlikely rendering from more than six decades ago. And think some, about the history.
Song-Hoshiyaar naujawaan jaag ae naujawaan (Pardesi Mehmaan)(1948) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Pt Indra Chandra, MD-Hansraj Bahl
Lyrics
hoshiyaar naujawaan
jaag ae naujawaan
jal rahaa tera makaan
jal rahaa hai hindostaan
hoshiyaar naujawaan
jaag ae naujawaan
jal rahaa tera makaan
jal rahaa hai hindostaan
khol aankh naujawaan
kaisa ye uthaa dhuaan
khol aankh naujawaan
kaisa ye uthaa dhuaan
hai museebaton mein jaan
zulm hai yahaan wahaan
hai museebaton mein jaan
zulm hai yahaan wahaan
hoshiyaar. . .
naujawaan
khabardaar naujawaan
hoshiyaar naujawaan
jaag ae naujawaan
jal rahaa tera makaan
jal rahaa hai hindostaan
jal rahaa hai aashiaan
ujad rahaa hai gulsitaan
jal rahaa hai aashiaan
ujad rahaa hai gulsitaan
so rahaa hai baagbaan
muskuraa rahi khizaan
so rahaa hai baagbaan
muskuraa rahi khizaan
hoshiyaar. . .
naujawaan
khabardaar naujawaan
hoshiyaar naujawaan
jaag ae naujawaan
jal rahaa tera makaan
jal rahaa hai hindostaan
lut rahaa hai karwaan
kat rahe hain bezubaan
lut rahaa hai karwaan
kat rahe hain bezubaan
dekh dekh naujawaan
mit rahaa tera nishaan
dekh dekh naujawaan
mit rahaa tera nishaan
hoshiyaar. . .
naujawaan
khabardaar naujawaan
hoshiyaar naujawaan
jaag ae naujawaan
jal rahaa tera makaan
jal rahaa hai hindostaan

Indeed this rare song is also the rarest of the songs where Mukesh has sung unlike Mukesh!
I had to listen to this song three times to come to the conclusion that this song was really sung by Mukesh. I will say that Mukesh has sung this song in Mohammed Hussain Farooqui style.
Thanks Sudhir and Pradeep for making available it possible to listen to this song.
