Strange are the ways of Almighty. He blesses a select few with natural in-born talents and competencies. Talents of the levels that can only be reached when the person is touched by Him. And then, with a display of a brightness that promises to outdo the sun, raising expectations of more wonders to come, He calls them back to Him, belying the expectations, and leaving behind the wonder of possibilities that could have been. The promise of the sun reduced to a shooting star that disappeared too soon. Ghulam Haider, a name one can associate to such possibilities.

Remembering Ghulam Haider Sb on the anniversary of his passing away (9th November). The fairytale of this prodigious composer begins in 1908. Born in Hyderabad (in Sind province, now in Pakistan), he belonged to a rich sheikh family. No records or family descriptions are handy to say whether his love for music began as a child and was his family instrumental for it in any way. He completed his intermediate education and joined the college of dentistry. And qualified in the exams to be a dentist.

While at college, one gets to read the first references about his inclination for music. He became so enamored with this art form that he got into learning classical music in a very formal way, from Babu Ganesh Lal. Given the duration of his school and college education, one can surmise that must have been in his very early twenties when he completed his college, and took on learning music. It goes on record that his family was very displeased with this change of plans for his life. Especially when he decided to abandon his career as a dentist and leave home in search of opportunities to satisfy is yearnings for musical accomplishments. He traveled to Calcutta where he worked as a pianist in two theatrical companies. He also go associated with the Jenaphone Recording Company as a composer.

This time period is most likely in the early 1930s. After spending some time in Calcutta, he returned to his home state, and settled down in Lahore. The film industry in Lahore was also taking off, and he got opportunities to work with producers like AR Kardar, Dalsukh M Pancholi and the father son team of Roshan Lal Shorey and Roop Kumar Shorey. AR Kardar gave him his first break in the film ‘Swarg Ki Seedhi’ (1935). The main singer in this film was Umar Razia Begum. Music led way to romance, and the two got married.

In terms of his early films, one finds mention of a 1934 film titled ‘Thief of Iraq’. However, the film credits list the music director’s name as Professor Ghulam Haider. It is possible that this person is the same as the Ghulam Haider we are talking about, but not confirmed. In 1935, he also composed music for the film ‘Majnu’ produced and directed by Roop K Shorey. As the Lahore film producers also went ahead with creating Punjabi films, Ghulam Haider Sb created music for films like ‘Gul e Bakaawali’ (1939) and ‘Yamla Jatt’ (1940).

Then in 1941, his music made the first big splash of his career. The film is ‘Khazaanchi’ from the banner of Pancholi Art Pictures. The music of this film struck a note with the listening public and the songs became very popular. Songs like “Saawan Ke Nazaare Hain” still continue to be favorites of music lovers. Ghulam Haider Sb had pioneered a fusion of classical music and the Punjabi folk milieu and scored a success. The next two years saw a spate of releases from Pancholi Art Pictures with music by him – ‘Khandaan’ and ‘Zamindaar’ in 1942, and ‘Poonji’ in 1943.

In 1944, he got his first assignment from the Bombay film industry, and scored music for the film ‘Bhai’, sharing credits with another stalwart, Shyam Sunder. After that there was no looking back. He became a busy music directors with an average of 3 to 4 releases every year. When the partition came in 1947, he made a decision to move to Pakistan. However, his association with the Bombay film industry continued, and he shared time between Lahore and Bombay, creating music both sides of the border. His music for the film ‘Shaheed’ (1948) deserves special mention, and the song “Watan Ki Raah Mein Watan Ke Naujawaan Shaheed Ho” continues to be considered as one of the best songs of patriotic fervor ever created.

His first film in Pakistani was ‘Shaahida’ (1949). This was followed by many other films like ‘Beqarar’ (1950), ‘Akeli’ (1951), ‘Bheegi Palken’ (1952) etc. The films did not do well. It was probably a weight on his mind – his decision to relocate back to Lahore. His last film released in Pakistan is ‘Gulnar’ (1953). He passed away a few days after this release, at such a young age of just 44. His music from the 1940s stands a lasting testimony, and leaves open a query to wonder – what bigger successes would he have accomplished, had he lived longer? The answer is known only to the Almighty, for He is the only One who knows all the designs of life.

For this post, I present a song from the film ‘Aabshaar’. This is a 1953 film, likely to be the last film in Bombay industry for which Ghulam Haider Sb has created the music. The film is from the banner of Globe Pictures and is produced and directed by Hasrat Lakhanvi. The cast of actors includes Nimmi, Ashok Kumar, Rajkumar, Shyama, Nigar Sultana, Om Prakash, Lalita Pawar, Kuldip, Tiwari, Shyam Lal, Iftikhar, Neelam, Chandni, Leela Pandey amongst others.

The words are from the pen of that very talented but less heard poet Qateel Shaifaai. And the singing voice is that of Munawwar Sultana. Now this Munawwar Sultana is not the actress Munawwar Sultana in Indian films. This lady is a singer from Pakistan, who started her career as a radio artist, and learnt music from Ghulam Haider Sb. When Ghulam Haider Sb moved to Lahore, this singer is one of new talents he promoted for film industry in Pakistan. Ghulam Haider and GA Chishti were the flag bearers in bringing up the Pakistan film industry from its nascent infancy after partition. And Munawwar Sulatana was the lead female singer who was part of this resurgence.

The song seems to be picturized as a slow paced dance song performed by a group of friends or roadside performers, telling about a special lady, the fame of whose beauty is spread across the country from Kashmir to Kabul. A real wonderful melody – as one listens to it, one gets a feel of the mountains and a group of folk dancers attired in their native apparel, performing to the slow beat of a dhol (drum).

A creation of enchanting simplicity, makes one wish He would not call back some people so soon in their prime. Enjoy.
