Thus she had sung,
“yaad karoge yaad karoge”
“ik din ham ko yaad karoge”
Remembering Geeta Dutt, nee Roy Choudhary, belatedly on the 83rd anniversary of her birth (23rd November).
A life that spent all of 41 years on this earth. A career that lasted two and a half decades, and even that was punctuated with gaps in active years because of personal circumstances. But oh, what a wonderful legacy she has left behind. A treasure of hundreds of songs, so lovingly moulded in a voice that simply penetrates into the depths of the heart, may it be the zestful chirpy sound of “Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo”(‘Howrah Bridge’, 1958), or the deep melancholia of > “Mera Sunder Sapna Beet Gaya”(‘Do Bhai’, 1947), or the playful and joyous “Mera Dil Jo Mera Hota”(‘Anubhav’, 1971). Each rendering is a gem crafted with the mettle of her voice that continue to buzz in the mind even when the sound has stopped playing.
Unreleased films are sometimes a rare treasure of wonderful songs that never made it to the mainstream. The films shelved, and their music never caught the fancy of the listening public, for no one got to see these songs in a formal release. Sometimes, the songs having been recorded, got released to the market, but there weren’t many takers for they have not heard of either the film, or about the songs themselves. But as the years pass by, these records and songs become collector’s items, avidly sought after by the aficionados.
Strange is the information about the unreleased film ‘Afsaana’. Back in the second half of 1940s, which are the starting years of Geeta ji’s career, this film was planned. And a dozen songs got recorded. There is very little, rather no information available about the creators of these songs. The name of lyricist and the music director is not readily available. There is even a controversy around the name of the film itself. The Geet Kosh lists the film titled as ‘Afsaana’, an un released film from 1940s. An annotated comment indicates that the film had an alternative name as ‘Kalakaar’. However, the physical 78 rpm records that hold the songs listed for this film, carry the name of the film as ‘Gandhi Mandir’. (I have seen some of the records of this film with my collector friend).
Of the twelve songs listed for this film, only one song is in the voice of Geeta ji. To that effect, it is very likely that this song could be one of the earliest recordings made by her. A sad song of supplication, it pleads with the rich to give in charity, to the poor, who do not ask for too much. Listen and ruminate.
Song-O dhanwaan o dhanwaan (Afsaana)(1946)(UR) Singer-Geeta Dutt
Lyrics
o dhanwaan
o dhanwaan
o dhanwaan
o dhanwaan
tu. . .
de de ghareebon ko
haaye dhanwaan
o mehlon mein rehne waale
aur palangon pe soney waale
o mehlon mein rehne waale
aur palangon pe soney waale
soney ke bartanon mein khaane waale
yoon hi daulat udaane waale
yoon hi daulat udaane waale
bhar de pyaala
naam bhagwaan
dhanwaan
tu. . .
de de ghareebon ko
haaye dhanwaan
baag bageechey tumne banaaye
phool phulwaari tumne sajaaye
baag bageechey tumne banaaye
phool phulwaari tumne sajaaye
sair ki khaatir motor mangaaye
chale ho tum piya ko saath bithaaye
chale ho tum piya ko saath bithaaye
hamaare liye ik paisa nahin hai
paisa nahin hai
in pe karte ho jaan qurbaan
dhanwaan
tu. . .
de de ghareebon ko
haaye dhanwaan
o dhanwaan
o dhanwaan
o dhanwaan
tu. . .
de de ghareebon ko
haaye dhanwaan
