Imagine. 33 films in a single year. And songs recorded – one hundred and eighty. In a single year. An average of almost one song every other day, composed, finalized, recorded, published. It is definitely one thing to talk about quality of music produced – that is the purist’s argument. But think of the producers who instilled their faith in the talent and work of this one music director – that is the populist argument to consider.
Greetings to Alokesh Lahiri on his 61st birthday. Ah yes, to clarify, he is more famous as Bappi Lahiri.
Most pundits and writers of Hindi films and film music concur to label Bappi Lahiri as an iconoclast music director, who led the juggernaut of noisy disco music that displaced melody as the life breath of Hindi film music, once and for all. If his prolific record of performance is to be judged by its impact, then the decades of 1980s and 1990s was the time when he reached out to a new generation coming of age in the era of Boney M, the BeeGees, Donna Summers and The Village People, hooked on to the swiveling rhythms and beats, and weaned them away from one world of wonder that was ruled by melody, to another wonder world that was simply different. And he did that by laying some of the most melodious snares, targeting the very same coming-of-age generation with popular melodious hits from films like ‘Zakhmee’ (1975), ‘Chalte Chalte’ (1976), ‘Aap Ki Khaatir’ (1977) and ‘College Girl’ (1978).
It is difficult to imagine that the creations such as “Abhi Abhi Thi Dushmani Abhi Hai Dosti” and “Jaltaa Hai Jiyaa Mera Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein” (‘Zakhmee’, 1975), “Chalte Chalte Mere Ye Geet Yaad Rakhnaa” and “Door Door Tum Rahe, Pukaarte Hum Rahe”(‘Chalte Chalte’, 1976), “Bambai Se Aaya Mera Dost, Dost Ko Salaam Karo” (‘Aap Ki Khaatir’, 1977), “Pyaar Maanga Hai Tumhi Se, Na Inkaar Karo”(‘College Girl’, 1978) and many more such endearing numbers that plucked the strings of many a young heart, have come from the baton of this actually very talented music director who received classical music in his genes, and started off as an independent music director before his twentieth birthday. The song “Chalte Chalte Mere Ye Geet Yaad Rakhnaa” still continues to be a fixture at farewell parties and alumni gatherings of all kinds.
Alokesh was born on this day in 1952. Both his parents are accomplished and well known music personalities. Father – Aparesh Lahiri – well known singer and music director in the classical and Bangla music. Mother – Bansari Lahiri – another well known singer in classical and Shyama music. He started playing the tabla at the age of three and was an accomplished pianist by the time he was 14. 1971 brought up his first assignment as a music director for the Bangla film ‘Daadu’, and in 1973 he made his debut on the Hindi screen with the film ‘Nannha Shikari’. The 1970s saw him bring on many a musical hits that established him as a frontline music director by the end of the decade. With a strong background in classical and western music, his talent with the baton is very well known and appreciated. The evidence can be seen in the song “Pag Ghunghroo Baandh Meera Naachi Thi” from ‘Namak Halal’ (1982), which is a fabulous example of fusion music, so much so that its length (almost 12 minutes) never sounds to be a drag. His popularity in his heydays can be gauged by the fact that he has given music to more than 500 films in 12 languages across the country, including composing for films in Bangladesh. The record itself is quite peerless, and his feat of 180 songs in the 1986 calendar year, has found its way into the Guiness Book of World Records.
After the start of 1980s, he went out full blast with numbers like “Hari Om Hari” (‘Pyaara Dushman’, 1980), “Rambha Ho Ho Ho, Samba Ho Ho Ho” (‘Armaan’, 1981) and “Jimmy Jimmy, Aa Ja Aa Ja” (‘Disco Dancer’, 1983) that attained chart buster status not just in India, but in many countries around the world. The disco had arrived in Hindi cinema, along with the rising graph of Bappi Lahiri, signaling the end of the reign of the Melody Queen.
Listening to songs composed by him in the 1970s, the mind does not want to believe the iconoclastic label that has been pinned on to this hugely talented musician, all his zing-bang creations of the 1980s and 1990s notwithstanding. Some of his creations from the decade of 1970s are really a pleasure to listen to. For example this wonderful Lata – Kishore duet. A song whose year cannot be ascertained, for this one is from an unreleased film. The recordings for these songs must have been done during the middle years of 1970s. I say this because the leading man in this film, Mahendra Sandhu made his debut in 1973, and so this film must be after that. The name of the film is ‘Ek Ladki Badnaam Si’. The film is directed by Desh Gautam and the available brief list of actors identifies only Mahendra Sandhu, Rehana Sultana and Danny Denzongpa. Three songs are listed for this film, all written by Kulwant Jani.
The song is a love song of promises between the lovers. The pace and the rhythm is so comfortable and pleasing. Listen to this wonderful duet of love. And wonder – Bappi Lahiri, wow. Enjoy.

Lyrics
rahen na rahen
chaahe hum aur tum
rahen na rahen
chaahe hum aur tum
charche jahaan mein hamaare rahenge
rahen na rahen
chaahe hum aur tum
charche jahaan mein hamaare rahenge
jeetey jee bhi saath tumhaare rahe hain
mar ke bhi saath tumhaare rahenge
rahen na rahen
chaahe hum aur tum
charche jahaan mein hamaare rahenge
palkon ki chilman jo uthhi rahe to
dekha karti hoon tujhe paas apne
palkon ki chilman jo gir jaaye to
dekhti hain aankhen meri tere sapne
band rahen yaa khuli rahen sajnaa
nazron mein tere hi nazaare rahenge
rahen na rahen
chaahe hum aur tum
charche jahaan mein hamaare rahenge
chhod ke naa jag mein akele mujhko
door meri nazron se jaana na sanam
isi mein chhupi hain mere dil ki khushi
aaj mere saath saath khaao ye kasam
saanson ki ladi jab tak rahegi
ik doosre ke hum sahaare rahenge
rahen na rahen
chaahe hum aur tum
charche jahaan mein hamaare rahenge
do hain ye badan magar ek jaan hai
sachche premi’on ki yahi pehchaan hai
sang sang jeene ki tamanna dil mein
saath saath marne ka armaan hai
dharti pe rahen mehboob ban ke
aasmaan pe ban ke sitaare rahenge
rahen na rahen
chaahe hum aur tum
charche jahaan mein hamaare rahenge
jeetey jee bhi saath tumhaare rahe hain
mar ke bhi saath tumhaare rahenge
rahen na rahen
chaahe hum aur tum
charche jahaan mein hamaare rahenge
charche jahaan mein hamaare rahenge

hullo Sudhirji
thank you for such a melodious discovery.
actually it has to be admitted that people who rate him as an iconoclast should also remember that it is not easy to make non nonsensical songs like 1) Mama mia pom pom 2) saath mere aaogi , ice cream khaogi 3) taki taki o taki taki taki re etc. specially when you have sound classical background. and to have :jahan char yaar mil jaye” (most tuneless gaana in my honest opinion) alongwith :Manzilen Apni Jagah hai” in the same movie. he must have been the most under rated talent at that time.
and mind it i am not a die hard fan of Bhappi Lahiri it is just that i love hindi fillom sangeet in all its forms, and was thoroughly entertained by Bhappi Lahiri songs in the 70s, 80s, 90s as well as in the 2000s
Happy Birthday Bhappi Lahiri

Peevesie’s Mom ji,
Thanks for your note and observations. Bappi Lahiri’s talent is unquestionable. Songs like this are serious work and a treat for listeners.
Some motivations, do not what, probably drove him in a certain direction.
