This is a very melodious song from film, RAMBHAKTA BIBHISHAN-1958,sung by Kavi Pradeep ji, who was an expert in singing such songs.

Ramayan and Mahabharat are two of our great epics and sacred books in India. Whether they are Historical records, Mythological yarns or mixture of both, is a point discussed by scholars for hundreds of years. But there are locations existing in the world which are mentioned in these two books and they may be a testimony to its being part Historical.

The meaning of RAMAYANA is, Ram + Ayan = The going of Rama or simply Rama’s journey. it is written by sage Valmiki. It has 24000 verses in 7 Kaands (Chapters). It is classified as ” Smriti ” and a ” Itihasa” work.

Ramayan is not just a story of Rama, but it tells us about an ideal son, ideal father, ideal servant, ideal brother, ideal wife and an ideal King. It explores human values and concepts of Dharma.

One, however, must not forget that it is a history written by the Victor. So it is likely to be biased in favour of the winner, though every character-even the Rakshasas-are portrayed meticulously and impartially in Ramayana. There are many versions of Ramayan, not only in India but also in various parts of the world.

The Tamil version is ‘ Ramavataram’, Budhist version is ‘Dashrath Jatak’, Jain adaptations as well as versions are found in Combodian, Indonasian, Fillipino, Thai,Lao, Burmese and Malaysian languages. No wonder that there are several Sinhalese versions of Ramayana too. Most Sri Lankan versions, understandably, are from the angle of the ‘ Loser’. Actually they do not show Ravan as a loser at all.

Even in India, Ramayana is Retold in local languages like, ‘Kamban’ Ramayana in Tamil, Madhav Kandli in Asamese, Ram Panchali in Bangla, Bhavartha Ramayan by Eknath in Marathi, Ramcharitmanas in Avadhi by Tulsidas ji and Kilipattu Ramayan in Malyalam. There are Budhist, Sikh, Jain and Nepali versions also.

Initially the Ramayan story was not a part of Sri Lankan Mythology, but from the end of 20th century , the Government of sri Lanka started taking some interest in it and today we have Tourist companies in India and Sri Lanka arranging ” Ramayan Sites Tours” in Sri Lanka !

Lots of research was done on Ramayana. According to some scholars (with proof), present day Sri lanka is NOT the Lanka mentioned in Ramayana. It was called Sinhal Dweep in that era. They claim that Lanka was an island located somewhere near Ujjain in M.P. or near the Godavari besin in Andhra Pradesh.

Whatever the scholars say, the common man believes in Valmiki Ramayan and its local versions. As per this, Ravana’s brother Vibhishan was a great Rambhakta and helped lord Rama in the Ram-Ravan war by providing vital military location information of Lanka to make Rama’s victory easier.

Vibhishan was also one of the 7 CHIRANJEEVIs, mentioned in our Mythology. Chiranjeevis lived through Satya, Treta and Dwapar Yug and will live through the present Kaliyug also, till the new Satyug arrives again.

The 7 Chiranjeevis are –

1. Ashwathama- son of Dronacharya
2. Raja Bali (destroyed by Vaman Avtar)
3. Hanuman
4. Kripacharya-Military Guru of Mahabharat princes
5. Parshuram- 6th Avtar
6. Bibhishan and
7. Maharshi Vyas-who wrote Mahabharat.

Vibhishan was the youngest son of sage Vishrava and mata Kaikesi. he was the step brother of Ravana and Kumbhakarna. Though he was born in the Asur Clan, he was a pious person with a satvik (pure0 mind and heart. He meditated so much that lord Bramha gave him a boon that he will forever be at the feet of lord Visnhu. Bibhishan strongly objected to Ravana’s act of abducting Seeta and advised Ravana to return Seeta, with honour to Rama and mend the mistake. Ravana was so angry on him that he threw him out. Vibhishan’s mother Kaikesi advised him to go and join Rama. He ,however, left his son Tarni to fight for Ravana as a symbol of duty and religion. His knowledge of Lanka was invaluable to Rama to defeat Ravana.( For this he was even called a Traitor, but he had sided with the right party.)

After Ravana’s death and before leaving with Seeta for Ayodhya, Rama crowned Vibhishan as the King of Lanka. He and hs wife Queen Sarama helped Lanka people to follow the right path of Dharma.

Being Chirnjeevi, Vibhishan is mentioned even in Mahabharat. After defeating kauravas, the Pandavas were crowned. They decided to do RAJSOOYA YADNYA to proclaim their sovereignity all over India. They sent Sahdev, with army to southern states to conquer. When Sahdev reached india’s last shores, the news reached Vibhishan. He came over, accepted their sovereignity and sent gifts for Dharmaraj Yudhishthir.

RAMBHAKTA BIBHISHAN-58 was a Rajnin Chitra film, produced by S J Rajdev, Directed by Samar Chaterjee and the music was by Ajit Merchant. The lyricist was Sarswati kumar Deepak. originally there were only 8 songs in the film, but at the last moment this song by Kavi Padeep was added to the film.

Let us now enjoy this song…..

Song-Ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki (Ram Bahkt Vibhishan)(1958) Singer-Pradeep, Lyrics-Pradeep, MD-Ajit Merchant

Lyrics

Ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki
Bhagwan ko chinta rehti hai
bhakton ke kalyaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki

jab jab bheed padi bhakton par
Prabhu ne aan ubaara
baal bhakt Prahlad ko hari ne
Narsingh bankar taara
bhakton ke kaaran aate hain
kaayaa dhar insaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki

Treta yug mein jab Raavan ne
Tribuvan ko dahlaaya
cheer sindhu taj deen bandhu ne
Nar ka roop banaaya
Bhakt Vibhishan ka dukh harne
chale Raam aur Jaanki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki

Seete Seete hey Seete sun
Panchwati ee ee
akulaayi
parnkuti ke saath huyi thhi
sooni kutiya praan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki

kehde na bhagwan se jaakar
ab na karen we deri
agar nahin aap aaye to hogi
yahaan raakh ki dheri
hai mujhko har ghadi prateeksha
Bhagwan ki muskaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki

ye katha bhakt bhagwan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwan ki
Bhagwan ko chinta rehti hai
bhakton ke kalyaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki

dharm jaa raha
punya jaa raha
Lanka neer bahaati
aaj abhaaga diya chhod ke
door ho rahi baati
nahin khabar thhi Raavan ko bhi
nahin khabar thi Raavan ko kya
taakat prabhu ke maan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki

teen lok se nyaari mahima
do akshar ke naam ki
do akshar ke naam ki
tair rahe pathhar paani par
Ye leela hai raam ki
tair rahe pathhar paani par
ye leela hai raam ki
mahima ved puraan sunaate
mahima ved puraan sunaate
Bhagwan ke vardaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki

bhakt Vibhishan ne bheeshan ban
kiya anupan tyaag re
kiya anupan tyaag
chadha diya prabhu ke charnon par
jeewan ka anuraag re
jeewan ka anuraag
Likhi bhakt ne putra rakt se ae
Likhi bhakt ne putra rakt se
ye gaatha balidaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki
ye katha bhakt bhagwaan ki

Arun ji,

Thanks for the wonderful discourse on the mythology of Sanatan Dharma. The details and amount of information is as expected from you.

One point – as I read this article, I remembered that from earlier readings, there are 8 Chiranjeevi beings. You have listed seven. The eighth is Markandeya Rishi. Markandeya Rishi is the only being in this creation who lives even through the night of Brahma. That is when, as per the Pauraanic texts, he was able to slip from the nostrils of Brahma, into the oceans of the waters of creation, and got the darshan of Lord Krishna in the form of a new born baby, floating in the waters on a leaf of “Vatt-vriksha” (banyan tree), holding His right toe in both hands and sucking on the thumb of His own foot, a vision that is described in the Sanskrit shloka,

“Karar Vinden Padaar Vinda Mukhar Vinden Viniveshyantam”
“Vatasya Patrasya Pute Shayanam, Balam Mukundam Manasaa Smaraami”
“With His soft lotus hands, Baby Mukunda has grabbed His lotus like toe and placed it in His lotus mouth, decorated with red lips, and sucks on it in amusement as He rests on the tender shoot of a leaf of the banyan tree, contemplating on the next cycle of creation”

In our ancient texts, there is a further distinction made between ‘chiranjeevis’ or ‘immortal’ beings, and the ‘amar’ or the ‘eternal beings. The chiranjeevis will dissolve when the cycles of creation ends, and Brahma goes to sleep, or when Brahma also dissolves away after 100 of his own years. But the ‘amar’ or ‘eternal’ entities are beyond the cycles of creation. These ‘eternal’ entities are Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and the knowledge of the Vedas.

Sudhir ji,
You are partly right.
Indeed Markandeya was also a CHIRANJEEVI,but since he was born a Mortal and was given a boon of Immortality in his this birth he is not considered on par with the other 7 Chiranjeevis, who were born as immortals.
I thought about it while writing the article and then decided not to include his name in the list. But technically he too was a Chiranjeevi,as you said.

Thanks for your comments.

Sudhir ji,

here is some additional information. According to Vishnu puran, besides the 7 Chiranjeevis, the following were also given a boon of Immortality-
Markandeya,Jambavan,Devapi, maru ,the Saptarshis and Bhusunda (crow).
The following shloka confirms that the original 7 Chiranjeevis were as mentioned in the article-

अश्वत्थामाबलिर्व्यासोहनुमांश्च विभीषण:कृपश्चपरशुरामश्च सप्तैतेचिरंजीविन:।
Ashwathaama Balir Vyasaha Hanumantha vibeeshanaha
Kripa Parasuramas cha
Saptaitey Chiranjeevinaha

Arunji,
Wonderful discourse about the Chiranjeevis. I was brought up listening to Shri Dongreji Maharaj’s Bhagwat Katha. One of the greatest saints of last century, known as Shukdevji Maharaj of the Kaliyug, lived his life as an ideal jeevanmukta. I am thankful to my parents for giving me the exposure to this saint from Gujrat at a very early age whose preaching guides me even today to be a good human. The shloka that you have mentioned, is what I remember him reciting during his Bhagwat Katha.
On YT, a devotee, Shri Hiteshbhai Joshi has uploaded the entire BK of this Saint.
Here is the link of the first part of ninety videos-

Sudhirji,
“Karar Vinden Padaar Vinda Mukhar Vinden Viniveshyantam” is part of our daily evening prayer. 🙂 Thanks for the story of Markandeya Rishi, a great devotee of Shiva and Vishnu.
