Remembering Rafi Sb today, on his anniversary of birth.

A voice like his, and a persona like him, has been a very unique and a very different presence in the film industry. Sadanand ji wrote in his write up earlier today, about Rafi Sb’s ability to so absolutely match his voice with the personality of the on screen performer, that the viewer would forget that it is a different voice in the playback, and would simply see and hear the on screen person. This ability of his, was a natural gift that was born from the personality that he was.

His humility and his friendliness, his affable grace are a legend in the industry. And more so, being a singer of singular eminence and popularity, the rankings and the demand did never rake up any self importance for him. Rather, to the contrary, his humbleness and his self effacement continued to grow, keeping pace with his growing stature. Sometimes in the late 1970s, the voice of Kishore Kumar started being pegged higher on popular billings.

In keeping with his natural traits, he most probably resorted to a serious self examination, to come to the conclusion that his art and his capability still needed more refinement. And at a stage in life where most people would rest on their laurels and wallow in their achievements, he seriously sought out a teacher and started to learn his art once again.

And thus he was able to do, for all that we praise him for and wonder at. His interminable capacity for self effacement is what made him lose his own identity when he sang, and blended his voice and the emotions so well with the performer and the situation, that the viewers’ natural instinct is to not even think of the identity of the playback voice. That, in a nutshell, is the seminal and extraordinary achievement of this great artist, and above all this great human being.

Many a music director remember him from their years of struggle, when he helped them with song recordings, sometimes for a nominal fee and in some cases, even no fee at all. Laxmikant (of the duo composers Laxmikant Pyaarelal) has once remarked – “. . . [Rafi Sb] always gave, without thinking of returns”. Probably that is how he sang also. When singing, he would be giving, without expecting anything in return – a return of either money or fame, or even gratitude. That is what made his voice, the voice of every performer.

A few of his songs have already been posted today. I present here today, a very endearing non film song. A song of remembrance of love, a song of the young hearts – yet one more beautiful expression of what love means. The words are simply sublime,

barkha mein bheegi chaandaniyaa
baadal ke sahaare letee hai

– the moonlight, soaked in the drizzle, is resting on the clouds. Wow.

I tried to search for related information, but have not been able to gather any. I request friends and readers to please help identify the lyricist and the music director for this wonderful piece of poetry and music.

Lovely and enchanting. Enjoy.

Song-Tum geet ho solven saawan ka (Rafi NFS)(1970) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Madhukar Rajasthani

Lyrics

tum geet ho solven saawan ka
jeevan pe mere jo chhaaya hai
sandesh ye le kar madhuban mein
saawan ka mahina aaya hai
tum geet ho solven saawan ka

barkha mein bheegi chaandaniyaan
barkha mein bheegi chaandaniyaan
baadal ke sahaare letee hai
baadal ke sahaare letee hai
wo roop ki kirnen baras rahin
aankhon ne ujaala paaya hai
sandesh ye le kar madhuban mein
saawan ka maheena aaya hai
tum geet ho solven saawan ka

us din jo li thi angdaayee
us din jo li thi angdaayee
ek baar agar tum phir le lo
ek baar agar tum phir le lo
to roop katore chhalak pade
masti ne ras barsaayaa hai
sandesh ye le kar madhuban mein
saawan ka maheena aaya hai
tum geet ho solven saawan ka
