The 7th song in the series ” Vintage Kishore ” is from film Rangilee-52.
It is an unique song and was a novelty in those days because then such things were not even imagined. This is the First song of Kishore in which he sang in two voices-male and Female. I said ‘First’ because Kishore did this feat once more in the film ” Half Ticket”-1962 wherein he sang Aake seedhi lagi in male and female voices. This ‘Half ticket’ song was posted on this Blog on 8-2-2009. Under the comments of this song I found a comment from Lalitha ji wherein she did mention about an earlier similar song by Kishore. Unfortunately she could not state the film name or the mukhda of the song. Except for this mention,I have not come across anyone who knew about Kishore’s earlier similar song.
The Music Director for Rangilee-52 was Chick Chocolate. This song “Bainya chhodo, balam ghar jaana re” was to be filmed on Mumtaz Ali, who was to use a double faced get up ( some years later, Sandhya copied this in Navrang)-male and Female. The song was supposed to be a duet, but since the presenter of the song on screen was only One, the composer perhaps must have thought why not also have just one singer for the song ? He knew about the mimicry of Kishore Kumar and he may have threw a challenge to Kishore Kumar to sing this song in male and Female voices.
This was a new experience for Kishore kumar also and he sang the song very enthusiastically.
Salil Chaudhari was the Music D for ‘Half Ticket’-62 in which the second Male-Female song of Kishore kumar had featured. The film had 7 songs and Kishore Kumar had featured in every song of the movie. 4 Duets of Lata-Kishore were planned and 3 were already recorded. ” Aake seedhi lagi’ was the 4th duet to be recorded. On the day of recording, Lata could not come due to ill health. Instead of cancelling the recording, Kishore offered to sing both Male and Female portions himself. Salil da was in two minds. Peerhaps when Kishore told him that Chic Chocolate had recorded such Male-Female song with him ten years ago that Salil da’s mind must have changed. And the song was recorded in male Female voices of Kishore Kumar for the second time !
The Music Director for this film, Rangilee-52-Chic Chocolate was a long time associate of C Ramchandra. Here is what the Wiki has to say about him-
Chic Chocolate (1916 – May 1967) born Antonio Xavier Vaz, was a Goan trumpeter who led a Jazz band at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay and was one of Bombay’s best known jazz musicians. He was also a Hindi film music composer and played trumpet in various soundtracks.
Chic was born Antonio Xavier Vaz in Aldona in 1916. He learned music at his local parochial school and, despite the wishes of his mother who wanted him to earn a “respectable” living as a mechanic, he followed his dreams of a life playing music.
Influenced by Louis Armstrong, Chic styled himself after his great jazz hero—Chocolate’s trumpet playing and “scatting” technique were a tribute to Armstrong. His stage presence has been recognized as dramatic, with accounts reporting that the musician would fall on one knee, while raising his instrument to the stars, during the band’s crescendo. Chocolate earned the sobriquet, the “Louis Armstrong of India”, as he not only played jazz like an African American, but also possessed a similarly dark complexion.
By the mid-40s, after he had played in Rangoon and Mussourie, Chic had established himself as a popular Bombay jazz musician. He started out with a group called the Spotlights and by 1945 had formed his own outfit, Chic and the Music Makers, beating out 12 other bands to win a contract at Green’s Hotel, which was owned by the Taj Mahal Hotel. A newspaper article from the time described Chic Chocolate’s band as “Bombay’s topflight band”. Chic Chocolate occasionally led a two-trumpet barrage at the Green’s Hotel with Chris Perry.
Like many Goan musicians of the time, Chic Chocolate played jazz live at the night but his days were spent in the film studios, recording and arranging sound tracks for movies. He had a flourishing career as a music composer in Bollywood movies. In 1951, he began his career as a music director with the movie Nadaan. Nadaan had a popular track list, including songs like Talat Mahmood’s Aa Teri Tasvir Bana Lu and Lata Mangeshkar’s Sari Duniya Ko Peechhe Chhodkar.
Chic Chocolate was an integral part of composer C. Ramchandra’s team. Ramachandra is popularly credited with introducing swing into Bollywood with tunes such as Gore Gore O Banke Chorefrom Samadhi and Shola Jo Bhadke from Albela. However the credit for these songs is due to Chic Chocolate. Their collaboration in the 1952 film Rangili included the song Koi Dard Hamara Kya Samjhe, sung by Lata Mangeshkar. He is remembered for his work with Naasir in the 1956 film Kar Bhala, and he also collaborated with Madan Mohan. Chic was the assistant music director for the film Bhai Bhai.
Chic’s lives as jazz man and film musician sometimes merged. He had a cameo appearance in the film Albela, along with his band in a song sequence dressing them in frilly Latinesque costumes. Chic capitalised on the film’s success by dressing his band in those costumes in future live performances.
Chic died in May 1967 in Mumbai, aged 51. Shortly after, Chetan Anand’s Aakhri Khat was released. The bluesy song Rut Jawan Jawan featured several close-ups of Chic Chocolate playing his trumpet solos from the bandstand. Chic had lived with his wife, Martha and his children in an apartment in Colaba.
In the early 50s, when Kishore kumar was trying very hard to establish himself in the film industry, atleast as a comedy hero-if not a singer, it was Dada Burman who helped him by giving him songs in almost every film of his in the 50s.
Dada was an experimenatalist and had judged Kishore very well. He knew that Kishore was a talented artiste, though without formal training in music. In the days when the music was serious and classical oriented, there were no takers for Kishore except Dada Burman. kishore had a plain voice and had nothing else except his spontaneity in front of the mike to help him.
S D Burman was a path breaker. There are few instances of Dada going against the tide and winning ! The trend in the film industry was to use one singer for one actor in one film. Like, Mukesh for Raj Kapoor, Kishore for Rajesh khanna or Rafi for Dilip or later on for Shammi kapoor etc. dada did not subscribe to this theory. he would use the singer depending on the mood of the song and situation of the song in the film. No matter if he has to use more singers for one Hero in One film.
Thus,Mukesh, Kishore and Rafi sang for Amitabh in Abhiman and Rafi, Kishore and Manna Dey sang for Dev Anand in Manzil. he had tried Kishore on Raj kapoor in pyar-50. In Sagina, Kshore sang for Dilip Kumar.
In 50s and 60s, when Lata was the reigning supreme, every composer felt that she was a must for his films. Dada thought differently. When there was a spat between him and Lata on the issue of re recording a song from ‘Sitaron se aagey’1958, he decided to compose his music without Lata. For the next 5 years, Dada composed music for many Hit films without using Lata ! Thus he proved that he had the guts and capability to go against the norms if it was needed.
In the 50s there was a competition between Naushad and C Ramchandra, as to who was Number One. Dada never entertained such competitions. But it was during this period that,as the statistics prove, Dada coolly composed more songs of ‘Anokhe Bol’ than C Ramchandra-who was the originator and promoter of such songs. It was considered his strong field. Dada proved that in this he did much better than C Ramchandra. And for ‘Anokhe Bol’, Dada did not have to depend only on Kishore Kumar, though he was the major contributor.
Kishore kumar is the only singer in the world to have sung songs for three generations of actors from one family-TWICE !
He sang today’s song ‘Bainya chhodo” for Mumtaz Ali, father of Mehmood-for whom Kishore sang many songs and in film Yehi hai Zindagi, Kishor sang for Mehmood’s son Lucky Ali.
He sang for Raj Kapoor in Pyaar-50, then he sang many songs for his son Rishi Kapoor. In 2008 film, ” bachna aye Haseeno” a Kishore kumar song- Bachna aye Haseena was lip synched by Rishi Kapoor’s son Ranbir Kapoor.
Film Rangilee-52 was the Debut film of actor RAAJ KUMAR – the dashing Hero known for his Dialoguebazi. In Hindi cinema after Sohrab Modi,it was Raaj Kumar whose dialogues were popular. He was famous for his favourite word ” Jaani “. The other day, while going through the discussions on RMIM group of Google I found an interesting question, ” Why Raaj Kumar is called Jaani, when he never used this word in his film dialogues ? “. On checking thoroughly, one found that it was only in the film Saudagar and Tiranga that Raajkumar had used the word Jaani ,only once each. Thats all.
Then why did this word become his identity ? The answer is that this word was used by Raajkumar in private conversations and interviews very frequently, that is why !
Raaj Kumar was Extra ordinary in the sense that most of the time he behaved unlike other stars.
He kept his personal life in close wraps. He believed in keeping personal and professional lives separate. He sent his children to Boarding schools to keep them away from films and to give them the best education, and to ensure that they did not become like other star children.
He had built a bungalow on Worli sea face and no one except his family was ever allowed inside. Whenever he left for work, a bunch of high pedigreed Dogs used to see him off till the Gate and welcome him on his arrival. He loved his Dogs very much. He used to say ” Insaan kutta ban sakta hai lekin kutta Insaan nahin ban sakta. Ye bahot achhi baat hai.”
In any Filmi party, he used to carry his own bottles. He never ever asked any special favours or concessions from any Producer. He was very punctual and one hour afternoon siesta was a must for him every day. This used to be one of the conditions in his work contracts with the producers.
The other artistes in the cast were Rehana, Yaqub, Mumtaz Ali, Balam, S.Nazir, Leela Mishra, Kathana etc. All the nine songs of the film were written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. The director of this film was Najam Naqvi and the producer was Gulistan.
Let us now hear the First song from Kishore Kumar in male and Female voices. Kishore Kumar is the singer. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chic Chocolate.

Raj Kumar or Kulbhushan Pandit had a style all his own; especially the swagger. He had a superb physique and drawl in his voice would make the girls and other swoon. He was Sub Inspector of Mumbai Police; that explains the discipline and the straight back and flat abs. A great and colourful personality, either pant or dhoti; he would carry himself with elan and verve. Miss him a lot.
