Greetings to all on this festive day of Christmas. With good wishes that Santa has got the goodies that you wished for.

Yet one more post for today combining two anniversaries. Today’s date is one of those that has many memories associated with it. Combining that with yesterday, it turns out that these are some of the busiest celebration days of the year.

Yesterday, 24th December, was the birth anniversary of Uma Devi, whom most folks would better recognize as the comedienne TunTun. As a very young girl, she had run away from her home, to Bombay to become a singer, a station in life that did not last too long with her. She turned to comedy and found a lifelong success and popularity with it. To the extent that her assumed name – Tun Tun has become a synonym for fat ladies. 🙂

And yet, there is an enchanting nostalgia associated with the name Uma Devi, the singer. In a little over a decade, she recorded about eighty songs in all. The sounds of “Ye Kaun Chalaa” and “Afsaana Likh Rahi Hoon” from ‘Dard’ (1947) and “Dilwaale, Dilwaale” from ‘Naatak’(1947) have a timeless capacity to tug at the strings of the heart.

And today is the also the anniversary of passing away of the prodigal music director Eric Roberts, who is more well known by the name Vinod, the creator
of the “Lara Lappa” song (‘Ek Thi Ladki’, 1949). Ten years later, in 1959, Vinod passed away this day, at an incredibly young age of 37 years. Sometimes one really wonders at the designs of destiny.

In a career that lasted a shade under fifteen years, Vinod composed music for more than 35 films, both Hindi and Punjabi. But even an average of more than two films per year, was never good enough. His financial situation was always insecure and in 1959 when he passed away, he was penniless. He was a startup gifted artist who had no godfather in the industry, and he never really broke into the grade A production houses and films. Competing against some of the best in class music directors, in the golden era of Hindi film music, he never did really make it to be a financial success. But his creations – one always wonders after listening to them and connecting the composer’s name to the song, one is left surprised. There is superb selection of Vinod songs on the Songs-Of-Yore blog that will give a flavor of the creative talent of this prodigal composer – click here.

I was searching for something that would bring together these two artists. And after quite a search I am able to trace this one song, that seems like
it is the only song that these two artists have done together. ‘Taara’, a film from 1949 has one duet wherein Uma Devi has sung under the baton of Vinod. The accompanying voice is that of Satish Batra. The name of the production house is interesting – New Bombay Theatres of Bombay. Wonder if it was trying to compete with the New Theatres of Calcutta. (Not so, says dear Arun ji Deshmukh, our inhouse encyclopedia. It seems only two films were made under this banner. And after ‘Taara’, the banner dissolved into oblivion. Please readhere for more information about this film.)

The film is directed by RD Parineeja. The main cast of actors includes Shyama, Jawahar Kaul, Kuldip, Majnu, Nayantara, and Chand Barq. The film has twelve songs, all from the pen of Aziz Kashmiri. Given the cast of actors, it is difficult to surmise on whom this song would have been filmed. Request is to the knowledgeable readers and friends to add more information.

So listen to this rare and unique combination, Uma Devi singing for Vinod. And unless some hidden information gets unearthed saying otherwise, this combination will not appear again. Enjoy.

Sudhir ji,

Thanks for posting this gem.
It may not be wholly correct to say that Vinod did not have a Godfather in the industry. Roop K Shorey and Vinod were together in Lahore and after Partition, when Shorey came to Bombay, with him came Vinod,Majnu (Harold Lewis) and few others who were very close to him.
When Shorey started his productions again in Bombay he almost always preferred Vinod as the MD. At the same time Majnu too featured invariably in his films.
It is another thing that this Godfather of Vinod himself never was counted in the A grade and kept on repeating same story of Ek Thi Ladki,in different garbs everytime-to the extent that even Ek thi Reeta was also produced and all his regulars kept featuring in those films, including Majnu and many times Johar too.

Sudhir-ji, many thanks for unearthing this song from oblivion. Thanks Arun-ji. for your comments. I always count Vinod as top notch. Lata’s “Taare Vahin Hain” from Anmol Ratan always brings tears to my eyes.

@Sudhir ji – Sir, thanks for the post and posts also!!
I did share a song sung by Uma Devi to Atul ji, however when I read the comments by our Prakash ji on ‘anniversary dates’ page,(regarding various dates and various ref. given for the date of death anniversary of Uma Devi aka TunTun ji I do not write a request for posting it on 24th.
I would request to clear the confusion please.

Sudhir ji,

What a way to bring the two rare artists together on their anniversary dates.
Well, it does seem to be the solitary song of the combo.

Thanks a lot.

Since in the wordings of the song, the male singer says Rakh Liya Naam Majnu Tere Liye… it might have been picturised on Majnu .
