The 12th song in the series ‘ VINTAGE KISHORE ” is from film Najariyaa-1952. The song is written by famous P.L.Santoshi and the music is by a less known MD- Bhola Shreshtha.

In the ocean of Hindi film industry, there were many talented and capable Music Directors who did not have enough luck or may be did not know the art of Self promotion. The list of such artistes is a long one, but the songs these composers have left behind are testimony to their genius and will surely keep their names alive for a long time. Composers like Daan Singh, Chand Pardesi, Sailesh Mukherjee, Sardar Malik, Dattaram, Narayan Dutt, K.Datta, Lachhiram, Ramlal, Mukul Roy, Kanu Ghosh, Kanu Roy, Jimmy, C.Arjun, Ajit Merchant, Dilip Dholakia, Dulal Sen, Dhaniram, Jamal Sen, Shambhu Sen, Sanmukhbabu Upadhyaya, Ganesh, Rajkamal, Shyamal Mitra……… are the forgotten ones. Each of them has contributed Gems in Music to Hindi films to the best of their capabilities.

BHOLA SHRESHTHA is also one of them. His name was Bholanath Shreshtha. His grandparents hailed from Nepal, but they later settled in Calcutta. Bhola was born on 17-6-1924. He was an expert in Tabla playing and had received a Silver Tray as a reward from Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore himself. In Calcutta his initial foray into film music was through K C and Manna Dey. Along with them, Bhola too came to Bombay and worked as an assistant to Khemchand Prakash in ‘Mahal’ and worked with Bulo C Rani for ‘Daroga ji’. Then he shared the music with Khemchand prakash and Jimmy for ‘Muqaddar-48. From here only he became a good friend of Kishore Kumar for a very long time, till his death.

As an independent composer his first film was ‘Najariyaa’-52. In this film and in next film,’Naulakha haar’, he used Kishore. Then came Aabshaar, Lakhon mein ek, Keemat and Tanakha. His last film ‘Ye basti ye log’ remained unreleased, but its recorded songs became popular.

He got married in 1953. He had 2 Daughters and 1 Son-Minal, Sailesh and Sushma (later she changed her name to Poornima)-who was a known singer from childhood in Hindi and Nepali films.

Bhola was not only unlucky in his career, but also his death cheated him. Raj Kapoor, Pran and some others of the Punjab Association of Bombay had planned a Career launching programme for his daughter Sushama Shreshtha on 12-4-1971. Bhola Shreshtha got a Heart attack on 11-4-1971 and he died instantly-just one day prior to his daughter’s first public programme. Sushama, however, very bravely attended the programme the very next day, sang songs and got a thunderous applause from the audience with standing ovation !

Last year, Minal Shreshtha, his eldest daughter, gave an interview on line. Here is its short version…

” Date of Birth: 17-06-1924
Date of Death: 11-04-1971
Bhola Shreshtha belonged to a Nepali family. His schooling and music lessons were done in Kolkata. His Grandfather was very fond of music and hence he developed an interest in the field.
Minal: My grandfather and grandmother were originally from Nepal. They later came to stay in Kolkatta. His reading habit was surprising.

Minal: He was interested in books on Philosophy, Music and works of fiction. His favourite authors were Freud and Dostoevsky. However he studied till matriculation only. He used to play with tabla in his childhood. K. C. Dey used to stay in the neighbourhood. He started taking Bhola Shreshtha to fairs. When K. C. Dey came to Mumbai in 1942 he brought along Bhola Shreshtha along with him. In his film ‘Tamanna’ he handed over the job of Assistant Music Director to Bhola Shreshtha.

Minal: Among the artists he had high regard for were K. C. Dey, Manna Dey and Ashok Kumar. They all came along to Mumbai to try their luck in the Film Industry.
Khemchand Prakash was a friend of Bhola Shreshtha’s father he knew Bhola. He got him a job at Ranjit Movietone as an assistant Music Director and he started using Bhola as an Assistant Music Director till ‘Mahal’. In 1949 he became an assistant to Bulo. C. Rani for the film ‘Daroghaji’. In the film ‘Muqaddar'(1950) which was composed by Khemchand Prakash there were three songs for which orchestration was done by Bhola Shreshtha.

Minal: Bhola Shreshta called Khemchand Prakash ‘Guruji’ as he was his mentor. In 1952 he was an assistant to Husnlal-Bhagatram in the film ‘Kaafila’. Nazariya(1952) was his first independent film. He later gave music in ‘Nau Lakhahaar’, ‘Lakhon Mein Ek’. In the film ‘Lakhon Mein Ek’ (1955) he used Talat’s voice very beautifully.

When Ghulam Haider passed away Bhola Shreshtha completed the compositions for the film ‘Aabshaar’. The song which was sung by Lata ‘Chale Aao Tumhein Aansu Hamaare Yaad Karthe Hain’ was very popular.

Bhola Shreshtha got married in 1953. In 1959 Sushma Shreshta(Later Poornima) was born, who later became a famous singer.

Minal: Eldest among the three children is Minal, followed by Shailesh and finally Sushma. But Bhola Shreshtha did not live to see the success of his daughter. He died of a heart attack in Mumbai.

Minal: His last film was ‘Yeh Basthi Yeh Log’. There were some unreleased films also. He later worked as an assistant music director for Kishore Kumar. One of Kishore’s earliest songs ‘Jagmag Jagmag Kartha Nikla’ was recorded by Bhola Shreshtha.

In all, he gave music in 9 films. The song mentioned in the Subject although composed by Khemchand had orchestration by Bhola Shreshtha. ” ( Thanks to in.groups.yahoo.com)

Kishore kumar was a popular artist but in his heart,he was always in quest of peace, tranquility, and happiness from home. In search of a good family life, Kishore married 4 times.

The first time ,he married Ruma Ghosh(later Ruma Guha Thakurta)- a small time actress in 1950. There was a stiff opposition from his family, because they wanted him to marry a girl from non-filmi background, selected by them-like his brother Ashok kumar. This marriage caused him much mental problems and if Dada Burman had not helped him that time, Kishore would have gone back to Khandwa. The first marriage lasted upto 1958, but gave him a son Amit Kumar.

The second marriage was with Madhubala, who was still recovering from the break up with Dilip Kumar. She had undergone lot of mental agony arising out of the court case by B R Chopra and Dilip’s statement in court against her and her father Ataulla Khan. Kishore also knew about her illness of heart. This marriage was opposed from both sides. Kishore had even converted to Islam for her sake. Within a few days of their marriage, Madhubala returned to her father’s home. This marriage lasted till her death in 1969.

The third marriage with Yogita Bali was so casual that it was almost a joke. In the private and hurried marriage ceremony, Mehmood acted as Kishore’s father and Shammi Kappor did the kanyadaan as Yogita’s father. This marriage lasted for 2 years on paper, but Yogita returned to her home, when she fell in love with Mithun Chakraborty.

Finally, Kishore Kumar got his ultimate love, satisfaction and happiness with his 4th marriage with Leena Chandavarkar. Just before marriage, she had undergone mental trauma of being present when her First husband-son of Goa CM-Bandodkar, committed suicide in front of her. Kishore was already over 50 years of age at this time, but he became extremely happy when they got a child-Sumit Kumar, from this marriage. It remained a Happy marriage till he suddenly died.

Here is a part of the interview where Kishore talks about each of his each marriage. Interviewer is Pritish Nandy-

” Pritish Nandy: What went wrong with Ruma Devi, your first wife?
Kishore Kumar: She was a very talented person but we could not get along because we looked at life differently. She wanted to build a choir and a career. I wanted someone to build me a home. How can the two reconcile? You see, I’m a simple minded villager type. I don’t understand this business about women making careers. Wives should first learn how to make a home. And how can you fit the two together? A career and a home are quite separate things. That’s why we went our separate ways.

Pritish Nandy: Madhubala, your second wife?

Kishore Kumar: She was quite another matter. I knew she was very sick even before I married her. But a promise is a promise. So I kept my word and brought her home as my wife, even though I knew she was dying from a congenital heart problem. For 9 long years I nursed her. I watched her die before my own eyes. You can never understand what this means until you live through this yourself. She was such a beautiful woman and she died so painfully. She would rave and rant and scream in frustration. How can such an active person spend 9 long years bed-ridden? And I had to humour her all the time. That’s what the doctor asked me to. That’s what I did till her very last breath. I would laugh with her. I would cry with her.

Pritish Nandy: What about your third marriage? To Yogeeta Bali?

Kishore Kumar: That was a joke. I don’t think she was serious about marriage. She was only obsessed with her mother. She never wanted to live here.

Pritish Nandy: But that’s because she says you would stay up all night and count money.

Kishore Kumar: Do you think I can do that? Do you think I’m mad? Well, it’s good we separated quickly.

Pritish Nandy: What about your present marriage?

Kishore Kumar: Leena is a very different kind of person. She too is an actress like all of them but she’s very different. She’s seen tragedy. She’s faced grief. When your husband is shot dead, you change. You understand life. You realize the ephemeral quality of all things. I am happy now. (Interview by Pritish Nandy) “

Chorus

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

hey ae ae
caaren hain beqaar sabhi
aaha
durr
caaren hain beqaar sabhi
jaise ke petrol bina
kya baat hai
aji shadi hai barbaadi
boohoohoo
jaise dham dham
dhol bina
jeevan hai ye soda water
preet ke meethe bol bina
to phir
bhale koi beqaar ho
daulat se laachaar ho
sabse bada hai wo hi banda
jiske dil mein ho ho
jiske dil mein ho ho ho
jiske dil mein pyaar ho
ulfat ka beemaar ho

hoye toote ghar mein rehta ho ya
phoote ghar mein rehta ho
fute ghar me rehta ho
aji chaahe sab dukh sehta ho
toote ghar me rehta ho ya
phoote ghar mein rehta ho
chaahe sab kuchh sehta ho

hasrat ke rangeen phoolon se
haaye haaye haaye haaye
haay haay
hasrat ke rangeen phulo se
jiska dil
arre jiska dil
ho
jiska dil gulzar ho
sabse bada hai wo hi banda
ho ho
jiske dil me ho ho
jiske dil me ho ho ho
jiske dil me pyar ho
ulfat ka beemaar ho
bhale koi beqaar ho
o daulat se laachar ho
sabse bada hai wo hi banda
jiske dil me ho ho
jiske dil me ho ho ho
jiske dil me pyaar ho
ulfat ka beemaar ho

hoy paas na jiske kaudi ho
paas na jiske kaudi ho ho ho
na joda na jodi
na joda ho
na jodi ho
paas na jiske kaudi ho
kaudi ho

aur na joda jodi ho
jodi ho
hakkad ho man mauji ho
manmauji ho
dadadada
hakad wo manmauji ho
zinda dil ho
quackquack
zinda dil ho
zinda dil ho yaar ho
yaar ho
aa yaa yaa
zinda dil ho yaar ho
zinda dil ho yaar ho
sabse bada hai wo hi banda
jiske dil me hoho
jiske dil me ho ho
jiske dil me pyar ho
ulfat ka bimaar ho
bhale koi beqaar ho
daulat se laachar ho
sabse bada hai wo hi banda
jiske dil me hoho

Arunji,
Leena’s first husband was Siddharth Bandodkar, son of Dayanand Bandodkar (Goa’s first CM) and brother of Shashikala Kakodkar (Goa’s second CM). Pl. treat this just as a correction.
