The 15th song in the series ‘ VINTAGE KISHORE ” is from the film Pyaar-1950 and is sung by Kishore and Shamshad Begum. S D Burman is the music director.
Pyaar-50 was the 12th film of Raj Kapoor. He had started from ‘Neelkamal’ in 1947 when Director Kidar Sharma had introduced him as a Hero for the first time. Raj Kapoor’s entry in films was not without the customary hiccups that most famous people encounter in their careers.
Kidar Sharma was working in Ranjit Cinetone at that time and he was making a film in which his old friend from Calcutta days-Prithviraj Kapoor was acting. One day Kidar observed that Pritviraj was looking worried and sad too. He asked him to open up. Pithviraj told him that he was very concerned about his son Raju (Raj ) since he was not studying properly and was going astray. Kidar asked him to send Raju to him and that he would make the young man his assistant and teach him the tricks of the trade.
Thus Raj Kapoor started working under Kidar Sharma, starting as a clapper boy. One day, annoyed with Raju’s carelessness, Kidar was so angry that he slapped Raju in presence of all the staff. He, however knew about Raju’s ambitions to be in films. So, when Kidar Sharma decided to produce a film ‘Bechara Bhagwan’ he offered the Hero’s role to Raj Kapoor. The Heroine was to be baby Mumtaz aka Madhubala-in her Teens- and the Music Director was to be Snehal Bhatkar. When Kidar’s partner, Chandulal Shah learnt about this casting, he was furious and took back his investment as a partner, since he never wanted Raj and Madhubala as a Lead pair. He also did not approve Snehal Bhatkar as the music director.
Kidar was determined. He returned all the money to Chandulal, but stuck to his choices. The name of the film was changed to ‘Neel kamal’. When the film was completed, Chandulal Shah saw the preview and magnanimously accepted his mistake. He purchased the distribution rights of the film immediately. When he made money out of ‘Neel kamal’ he rewarded Kidar Sharma with rupees one lakh ! All this episode is described by Kidar Sharma in his Autobiography.
From the beginning, Raj was a woman chaser. He liked beautiful women and that too in white. No wonder he fell in love with Nargis. She was just 19 years old at that and ready for a relationship. If it was not Raj, it would have been someone else at that juncture. Raj just happened to be her First Boy Friend.
After pairing with Raj Kapoor in 16 films, Nargis realised by 1956 that though he was in her love, he would never marry her. He was already married and she was determined not to spoil his married life. But she did not know how to fructify her relationship with Raj. She even met Morarji Desai-Chief Minister of Bombay to find out if the new amendments to Hindu Marriage Law allowed second marriage legally. The answer was negative. She realised that she was clinging to a one sided relationship which had no future. According to a book “Darling ji” written by Kishwar Desai, she even thought of committing suicide !
Then in 1957, ” Mother India ” happened and Nargis found an outlet for love in Sunil Dutt, who treated her respectably as a normal woman.
After Nargis, Raj could never remain the same !
But all this was much later. In Pyaar (1950), the pair of Raj and Nargis had clicked. Incidentally, this was also the first time (and the last too) when Raj sang in Kishore’s voice.
In 1950 Kishore was in deep trouble. He had married Ruma Ghosh (later Ruma Guha Thakurta),and was to become the father of Amit Kumar. There was stiff opposition to this marriage from his family and he was made an outcast. The newly married couple was living in the far off suburb of Dahisar in Bombay. Under these circumstances, it was dada Burman who helped Kishore. He gave him songs in his films, including Pyaar. Later on, he must have realised that Kishore’s voice did not suit Raj Kapoor.
In any case , after Barsat and Awaara, Raj had decided on Mukesh as his voice. Of course when he worked outside RK films, he never objected to the Music Director’s choice of the singer. Thus several singers like Rafi, Talat, Kishore, Manna Dey, Shankar Das Gupta, Hemant Kumar, Chitalkar, Narayan Dutt (Neel kamal) and Kamalesh Awasthi(Gopichand Jasoos) gave playback to Raaj kapoor. Even Raaj himself sang in one film.
Here is the second set of statistics for Kishore’s songs-
As an actor he sang 234 songs in 93 films
as a Director he sang 58 songs in 8 films
as a singer(in all languages) he sang 2703 songs in 1189 films
as a Music director he sang 83 songs in 11 films and
as a lyricist he sang 17 songs in 10 films.
Kishore did Double roles in 6 films and in ‘badhati ka naam Dadhi’ he did 6 roles.
His Silver Jubilee films where he acted and sang were Ladki, Adhikar, Pahli Taarikh, New Delhi, Ilzaam, Chandan, Shararat, Bewqoof and Pyar kiye jaa.
His Golden Jubilee films where he acted and sang were Luku Churi(Bangla), Chalti ka naam gaadi, Bhai Bhai and Asha.
Though he was known to be an extreme miser, not many people know that he was sending Rs.5000 every month to the widow of Arun kumar Mukherjee, singer, Music Director and his cousin. He financed Satyajit Ray for “Pather Panchali” and also financed “Daal mein kaala”.
Let us now enjoy today’s duet from film Pyar-50. THis song is written by Rajinder Krishan.

It seems to me (and I could be well mistaken) that this song sounds simlar to the song from Bambai Ka Babu (see https://atulsongaday.me/2012/11/29/tak-dhoom-tak-dhoom-baaje/ ) sung by Manna De? It might be possible, since SBD was the music director for both the movies – although they were separated by 10 years in time.
It would be nice to have some other members of this blog verify my suspicion (or refute my claims too !!)
