This is the 16th song in the series ” VINTAGE KISHORE “. It is sung by Kishore and Shamshad Begum. Chitragupta is the Music Director.

Some time back I had asked a question whether Real life follows the Reel life or the Reel life follows the Real life. That way Indian Cinema has always been alive to country’s trends. In the early days of film making, when Kings and Nawabs patronised the industry, films were made on Kings, Queens and Vazirs. When the country was fighting for Freedom, the films tried their best to give messages of Patriotism through the movies and songs.

When Division of India was imminent and unavoidable and finally the Partition took place, many families were devastated, broken and destroyed. Indian Film Industry came forward during this period making films that encouraged building joint families, upholding family culture and values, an unified social structure and an united country. During the period from around 1945 to about 1955 many films were made on the central theme of “GHAR” or the benefits of joint family, cultural values and importance of strengthening the united family life.

Take a look at the Titles of films made during this period-

Ghar, Gharana, Gharbar (48 and 53),Ghar ghar ki kahani, Hamara Ghar, Ghar ghar mein Diwali, Ghar ki bahu, Ghar ki Izzat, Ghar ki Numaish, Ghar ki shobha, Gharonda, Ghar sansar, Hamara Sansar, Hamara watan, Hamari beti, Hamari duniya, Hamari manzil, Hamari Kismet, Hamaari Shaan, Pati Parmeshwar, Pati sewa, Samaaj, Samaaj ki Bhool, Samaaj ko badal dalo(47), Maa baap ki laaj, Maa ka pyaar, Maa ke aansoo, Badi maa etc etc.

Hamara Ghar-1950 was one of such films in which the message of benefits of integrated family benefits was very strongly depicted. The film was made by ‘Hindustan Chitra’ and was directed by Nanabhai Bhatt ( father of Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt). Music was by Chitragupta. The cast was Durga Khote, Umakant Desai, Veera, Agha, Meena Kumari, Geeta Bose, David, Jankidas, Ramesh Gupta etc. There were only 7 songs in the movie which were sung by Rafi, Geeta, Kishore and Shanti Sharma. Lyrics were by Anjum, Rammurthy Chaturvedi and Bharat Vyas.

The story was built around a happy family of 5 brothers, their wives and their Mother-Durga Khote. It is a joint family, with all its benefits and shortcomings. One of their relatives, a brother of a Bahu, tries to break the family by instigating the brothers to take their shares and get separated from each other. When this news reaches the mother, she calls all the sons together and gives them a lecture exhorting them to remain united. One of her dialogues in this lecture became very popular in those days. It was-

” SANGHATIT GHARON SE HI SANGHATIT RASHTRA BANATA HAI ” ( Only United families make an United Nation).

After this dialogue, people in the theatre used to clap, whistle and shout with approval ! Her dialogues were quite lengthy as she gave them examples from History. This lecture was the Highlight of the film.

After many ups and downs, twists and incidents, the film ends on a happy note, throwing the instigator out of the house and after a Group photo with ‘Mother India’ in the centre.

In the cast you must have seen the name UMAKANT DESAI. I am sure most people would not know anything about him. People remember Dilip Kumar for his double role in ‘Ram aur Shyam’ and Triple role in ‘Bairaag’, you also remember Sanjeev Kumar for his 9 roles in ‘ Naya Din nayi Raat’ or Kamal Hassan for his 10 roles in Dashavtar, but hardly anyone knows that Umakant Desai was the FIRST actor to do 3 Roles in a film ” Hukum ka Ikka “-1939( Rajkumar, Madari and a common man).

Umakant Desai was born in Sankheda, near Vadodara (Baroda), Gujarat on 13-6-1908. After matriculation, he came to Bombay and did a job in B.B. & C. I . Railways (Bombay,Baroda and Central India Railway, a private Railway company of pre Independence period). He used to do roles in local dramas. One day Director Chimanlal Desai saw him in a drama called ” Jaya and Jayant”. He was so impressed with him, that he took him to act in Gujarat’s First Talkie ” Narsi Mehta”-1932. In this film Umakant did the role of Krishna.

So,the son of a landlord Himmatbhai Jagubhai Desai became a film actor. He joined Prakash Pictures on a salary of Rs.150/- pm, but when he left Prakash,he was drawing Rs.3000/- p.m. In 1934,he worked in Gujarati film ‘Sansar Leela’. He sang 2 duets with Rajkumari in this film. The film was a Hit and it was remade in Hindi as “Nai Duniya”. He worked in Bharat Milap-42. His best rememebered role was as LAXMAN in the film ” RAMRAJYA”-1943 which created several records, including that it was the first and the only film Mahatma Gandhi ever saw in his lifetime !

Umakant worked in 59 Hindi films and 15 Gujarati films. Anmol Moti-48 was his last film as a Hero. Then he switched over to doing character roles. He had worked with Durga Khote, Shobhana Samarth, Pramila, Ratnamala, Ranjana, Sitara, Snehprabha Pradhan, Meena Kumari, Amita, Vyjayanti mala, Nalini Jaywant, Kamini Kaushal etc. He had appointed a Teacher for himself in order to acquire fluency in Hindi and Urdu.

He worked in 26 films of Prakash, in which 8 films were directed by Vijay Bhatt. He mostly worked in mythological and social films. Some of his films were, Miss Mala, Chhote Babu, Station Master, Amar Asha, Poornima, Anmol Moti, Kavita, Hamara Ghar etc .

Umakant’s son and daughter in law died tragic deatsh in the Snow Blizzard in USA in 1975. His wife Kaumudiben died in 2006 and Umakant died on 25-1-2007.

He was awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award in 2004.
( Thanks to Shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji,famous film historian, compiler and writer, for his Gujarati article on Umakant).

Let us now listen and enjoy the duet of Kishore and Shamshad Begum from the film Hamara Ghar-1950. Lyrics of this song were sent by Nitin Shah.

Nitin ji,

So,you too got confused ?
Dadasaheb Phalke Academy is a private, insignificant institution giving away awards for Actors,Directors,Singers, etc.
This is different than the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award given by the Government of India.
