I am presenting a song ‘tumne mujhse prem jataa kar’ from the film WAAPAS (1943). At first, the voice of the singer in the song appears to be that of Jagmohan Sursagar. In fact, one of the uploaders of the audio clip has mentioned Jagmohan Sursagar’s name as the singer of this song. Actually, the song is sung by the singer-actor Asit Baran. I am not surprised with this slip up on the part of the uploader. I for once also felt that the voice was that of Jagmohan Sursagar. The music composition of the song also gives an impression that it is a non-filmy song. The song is written in a ghazal format by Munshi Zakir Hussain which is set to music by R C Boral.

WAAPAS (1943) was produced under the banner of New Theatres Limited and was directed by Hemchander Chunder. Asit Baran and Bharti Devi were in the lead roles with Dhiraj Bhattacharya, Nawab Kashmiri, Indu Mukherjee, Raj Laxmi, Hiralal etc. in supporting roles. The synopsis of the film given by Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh has already been covered in the post jeewan hai bekaar bina tumhaare.

The film is a love story between a city bred girl (Bharti Devi) and a boy (Asit Baran) brought up in a village. With different cultural backgrounds, parents of both the families oppose the marriage. The father and daughter leave the village for the city. After sometime, a marriage proposal for Bharti Devi comes from an affluent family for their nephew (Dhiraj Bhattacharya). The marriage is fixed. In the meanwhile, Asit Baran also lands in the city and becomes the coachman of Dhiraj Bhattacharya. He comes to know about the impending marriage of his fiancée with Dhiraj Bhattacharya. The song under discussion is the aftermath of the situation in which Asit Baran finds himself.

The film has a happy ending. When Dhiraj Bhattacharya comes to know about his ‘would be’ wife’s relationship with his coachman and their love for each other, he agrees to arrange their marriage by saying to Asit Baran ‘I am returning (waapas) hopes and aspirations of your life to you’. The film ends with Dhiraj becoming a coachman to the newly wedded couple and they all sing a shorter version of bhool na jaanaa aaj ki baaten.

The film had seven songs of which five songs have already been covered in the blog. The song I am presenting here is the sixth song. The audio quality of the video clip of the song is not so good. Hence I have also given the link to the audio clip which has a good audio quality.

Lyrics

tumne
mujhse
prem jataa kar
tumne
mujhse
prem jata kar
duniyaa se begaanaa kiyaa
duniyaa se begaanaa kiyaa
dil thhaa ek sukh dukh kaa saathi
dil thhaa ek sukh dukh kaa saathi
uss ko bhi deewaanaa kiyaa
uss ko bhi deewaanaa kiyaa
tumne
mujhse
prem jataa kar
duniyaa se begaanaa kiyaa

dil kaa sheeshaa naazuk sheeshaa
dil kaa sheeshaa naazuk sheeshaa
thhes lagi bas choor huwaa aa
thhes lagi bas choor huwaa
beeti jo kuchh mujh par beeti
beeti jo kuchh mujh par beeti
logon ne afsaanaa kiyaa
logon ne afsaanaa kiyaa
tumne
mujhse
prem jataa kar
duniyaa se begaanaa kiyaa

aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
tumse jo uss din aankh lagi ee ee
ab tak na hamaari aankh lagi ee ee
tumse jo uss din aankh lagi ee ee
ab tak na hamaari aankh lagi ee
dard kaa saudaa mol liyaa aa aa
dard kaa saudaa mol liyaa
sukh chain tumhen nazraanaa kiyaa
sukh chain tumhen nazraanaa kiyaa
tumne ae
mujhse
prem jataa kar
duniyaa se begaanaa kiyaa
duniyaa se begaanaa kiyaa

This song and almost all songs of Asit Baran ware sung by my elder brother superbly, and even today we sing it in almost all family gatherings remembering AB and my brother.
