Yesterday (31 january 2014) was the tenth death anniversary of Suraiyya and we reached the figure of 200 songs of Suraiyya in the blog on the occasion.

Though I have not done any thorough research on the songs of Suraiyya, I think that I have a general idea about the statistics related to songs sung by Suraiyya, based on comments made in this blog and elsewhere.

It would appear that Suraiyya sang about 306 songs in all (give or take a few). It means that now only about one hundred Suraiyya songs are left to be covered in the blog. We have covered 200 Suraiyya songs in the blog during 66 months of existence of this blog, which works out to an average of 3 songs per month. If we post around ten Suraiyya songs per month from now onwards then we should be in a position to cover all Suraiyya songs by the end of this year.

Researchers on Suraiyya have estimated that she sang for around 35 music directors in all. But the main music directors for her were just two, nalely Husnlal Bhagatram and Naushad. Even I have noticed this fact while discussing songs sung by Suraiyya. I have also noticed that Husnlal Bhagatram reused at least two Suraiyya songs in two different movies. They first composed these songs for “Amar Kahaani” (1949) and then reused them in “Kanchan” (1955). I had initially discussed these songs under “Kanchan” (1955) and when I was discussing them under “Amar Kahaani” (1949) then I came to know about this duplication. These songs are Ik teri nazar ik meri nazar and
Khushiyon ka zamaana beet gaya. I have no idea why this reuse of the same songs took place. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this matter.

In my bid to cover all Suraiyya songs by the end of this year, here is the 201st Suraiyya song in the blog. It is from “”Aaj Ki Raat” (1948). This movie was directed by D D Kashyap for Famous Pictures production. The movie had Motilal, Suraiya, Yakub, Leela Misra, Raj Mehra, Anita Sharma, Sangeeta, Shah Nawaz etc in it.

From the lyrics, it can be noticed that this is a joie de vivre genre of song as well as the title song of “Aaj Ki Raat” (1948). Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

aaj ki raat mohabbat hai jawaan
aaj ki raat mohabbat hai jawaan aan aan
aaj ki raat
aaj ki raat mohabbat hai jawaan
koi dekhe meri duniya ka samaa
koi dekhe meri duniya ka samaa aa aa
aaj ki raat
aaj ki raat mohabbat hai jawaan
aaj ki raat mohabbat hai jawaan aan aan
aaj ki raat

koi aayega yahaan pyaar ki duniya lekar
koi aayega yahaan pyaar ki duniya lekar
dil mein armaan to aankhon mein tamanna lekar
dil mein armaan to aankhon mein tamanna lekar
muskuraayega mohabbat ka jahaan
muskuraayega mohabbat ka jahaan aan aan
aaj ki raat
aaj ki raat mohabbat hai jawaan
aaj ki raat mohabbat hai jawaan aan aan
aaj ki raat

jab sunayega mohabbat ka fasaana koi
jab sunayega mohabbat ka fasaana koi
pyaar mein dooba hua dil ka taraana koi
pyaar mein dooba hua dil ka taraana koi
do dil ho jaayenge phir ek yahaan
do dil ho jaayenge phir ek yahaan aan aan
