Ding dong ding dong ding lalla

This article is the 9400th song post in the blog.

It seems to me that we just did the century milestone. I simply turn around, had just taken one breath, and there is Atul ji’s message that we are on to the next century stone. Wo, I say to myself, this is not right. But then I check, and it is. 9400, OMG.

Welcome all to the ninety four hundredth post on this blog. Give or take a couple of days here and there, but the regularity is fairly consistent. And the rate at which the larger target is approaching, wow, it seems to be speeding up now. Reminds me of the Doppler’s effect in Physics. An object that moving towards you, appears to be moving very slowly when it is at a great distance. But as the distance in between gets shorter, the object gives an appearance of having gained speed.

Or to put it another way, when we are moving, let’s say on the highway, then the landmarks that are farther away, seem to be approaching very slowly. But when we get closer to them, it seems that we are reaching the very same landmark at a faster pace. The whole concept and the actual experience has to do with the in-between distance – as it gets smaller, it seems as if the traveling object (i.e. us) and the target are gaining speed. I will spare the maths behind this, and simply say – wow, this 10K target seems to be approaching at a greater speed now. It was unthinkable say three years ago, it seemed possible two years ago, it seemed within reach one year ago, and now, just about three months away, it is beginning to seem like a towering mountain we are approaching. A mountain that three years ago was just a speck on the horizon.

Once again, the team work of all people involved is simply immense. The consistency is almost beyond belief. So much has been written about it that not many more words can be added to the platitudes already documented. And ah yes, the few words that are remaining, I am going to save them for the upcoming occasions. 🙂 Fair enough?

And what is a century milestone without an accompanying celebration? We must have one, I can almost hear your response already. And so yes, we have, a very significant milestone to celebrate today – the 500th post for the melodious nightingale, Geeta Dutt.

As I write this post, I suddenly realize what an amazing co-incidence it is. My post on 28th Jan is a greeting to Suman Kalyanpur. On 31st Jan, my post is a tribute to Suchitra Sen. And today’s milestone post is a celebration for Geeta Dutt. Do you see the connection? OK, let me reveal it. All the three artists were born in East Bengal, which is now known as Bangladesh. Quite a coincidence.

The story has been told often. Born in Faridpur in 1930. Family moved to Bombay in 1942. 1945 or so, the young Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhary is just 15 years old. And fate brings the music director Hanuman Prasad to the building in Dadar area where the Roy Chowdhary family stays. The young Geeta is singing. Hanuman Prasad hears the voice and goes to search out where it is coming from. He meets with the family and convinces them to allow the young Geeta to be trained by him. It is 1946, and a sixteen years old Geeta records her first songs for the film ‘Bhakt Prahlad’ under the music direction of her mentor.

Thence starts the ups and downs of a singing career, that always shone brightly, in popularity as well as in memories. But it was also a saga that was so full of personal trials and tribulations that this shining star never really found its due place in the skies of the film industry. Looking back at the troubled decades that followed her debut, and the songs that really launched her, one is wonderstruck by the divination of the things foretold at the onset, about the future to be.

Readers will know that I refer to the film ‘Do Bhai’ from 1947. Under the baton of Sachin Da (SD Burman), she has rendered two songs. One of them tells the story of her life. And the second one is almost as if she sang her own epitaph, right at the start of her career. The first song I refer to is “Mera Sunder Sapna Beet Gaya” and the second one, “Yaad Karoge, Yaad Karoge, Ik Din Hum Ko Yaad Karoge”. It’s a wonder that she rendered these songs when she did. And then she lived the essence of these songs for the rest of her life.

For today’s celebration, I present what easily makes it to the category of a super duper song of joy in love, of having your heart stolen away. And then you sing out the jubilant words by Shakeel Badayuni , tuned to such a foot tapping melody by Ravi, that it will be difficult to sit still as this song is played. The film is ‘Grihasthi’ (1963). Produced under the Gemini banner, it is directed by Kishore Sahu. The cast is very impressive and includes Ashok Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Rajshri, Indrani Mukherjee, Sudesh Kumar, Lalita Pawar, Bipin Gupta, Jagirdar, Iftikhar, Kanhaiya Lal, Niranjan Sharma, Achla Sachdev, Pushpavalli, Bharti Malwankar, Mehmood, Shobha Khote, and many more not listed.

The video clip does not contain the full song. I actually went back to confirm it from the disc version I have. Appears that only one stanza of the song is filmed, whence it is interrupted by another event. I will not go into the details of the storyline, just a little piece around this song.

It is being performed on a stage, in a theatre in Rangoon, Burma. The time in history is when the second world war was in progress. As the theatre performance is in progress, it is interrupted by an air raid by the Japanese air force. The song is abandoned, as everyone runs to safety. (I have also included the audio clip which contains the complete version of the song.)

So listen to this voice that is so vibrant with the joys of love. The lilt in the rendering almost makes one feel the dance in the step, as the heart is pushing the emotion into the vocal chords. Listen, and enjoy.

And also wonder. The persona behind this artist. What a life she led. And that too, summed up in another song by herself –“Waqt Ne Kiya, Kyaa Haseen Sitam”.

I read the star cast and noticed that you have not mentioned the actress who sings this racy number! She is Devika, a very well known and popular actress in Tamil movies.

Congratulations on another century.

Thank you Sudhir ji for the post and the song.

Whether this Devika is the same Devika who starred in hindi movie Gharana(1961) ???There is one Bhajan also picturised in Gharana on her.

Here comes the another twin occasion of celebrations with unfailing regularity like our festivals. As Sudhirji pointed the bigger milestone is visible now and is just about 3 months away
What to say about GD who could be seductive, emotional, beseeching, soulful as the occasion merited. She could sing cabere and bhajan with consummate skills. The first lines she sang for Bhakt Prahlad:
ab jaani re pehchani re
suno suno vinti hamari
suno suno hari ki leela
jaag uthe hum jaag uthe
She had a typical bangla voice which conveys sarvaswa arpan bhavna like aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo janam safal ho jaaye
She has sung over 1200 hindi film songs. Lot of catching up required.
I think a postage stamp was released in her name.

Atulji,
Congratulations on this double celebrations!!!!
Sudhirji,
Thanks for the wonderful post. The Doppler effect…. aha…… reminded me of the Physics lab of Mithibai College, Mumbai. The experiment that our professor, Mr. Purohit (so proud of myself, still remember his name) explained scientifically then and now, I can visualize the philosophy behind it.
Thanks again.
