Raag Maalikaa in Hindi Films – 3
=====================
Rajkamal Kalamandir’s Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje was a 1955 Indian classical dance (Katthak) based film, produced and directed by V Shantaram. Shantaram’s wife Sandhya and dancer Gopi Krishan were in lead roles along with Keshavrao Date, Madan Puri, Manorama, Bhagwan etc. One of the earlier Technicolor films made in India, it was a “Super Hit” at the box office.

Hasrat Jaipuri was the lyrics writer and Vasant Desai composed great classical based songs with the voice of Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey and Hemant Kumar.

The film was awarded as Best Feature Film in Hindi at the 1955 3rd National Film Awards. In 1956, the film won the Filmfare Best Movie Award. The other Best Awards also won for ‘Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje’ were ‘Best direction – V Shantaram’, ‘Best Art Direction – Kanu Desai’ and ‘Best Sound Design – A K Parmar.

The situation of this RaagaMaala, in short, can be described as follows:
Classical dance guru Mangal Maharaj ( Keshavrao Date) stumbles on a dance performance in a lavish haveli by Neela (Sandhya). He orders his talented son Girdhar (Gopi Krishan) to demonstrate to the audience the true method of classical dance. Entranced by Girdhar’s skill, Neela begs Mangal Maharaj to admit her as a pupil. He finally agrees on two conditions: she must devote her life to art and she must partner Girdhar in the Tandav portion of an upcoming dance competition. As the two practice together, she begins to fall in love with Girdhar.
The raagas used in this Raagamaala are Yaman, Basant bahar, Megh Malhar, Pahadi and Khamaj, sung superbly by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar.
