Today, I feel like shri Vitthalpant Kulkarni-father of Sant Gyaneshwar (Dnyaneshwar)-who had come back to Grihasthashram from his Sanyas. He came back to this material world, on the instructions of his Guru, as he was destined to give birth to the Saint.

In my case, I just concluded the “Debut or First Film Songs Series”, and now I realised that an important Debut song of a Singer from the 40s was still left to be discussed. So, here I am again to present the Debut song of the singer NASEEM AKHTAR from her First film NISHANI-42.

The history of Hindi Films and Music is replete with unsolved mysteries, disputes, misinformation, riddles and puzzles as well as half or wrong informations. Fortunately, there are a few dedicated workers who constantly dig out correct information and few matters are thus resolved. Though delayed, at least the true information thus becomes available for the future.

There was the case of who actually sang the song ” Dilli se aaya bhai Tingoo” from film EK THI LADKI-1949. For almost 50-60 years it was believed that Honey O’Brion, who lip synched this song in the film had sung this song herself-though there was no history of her singing any songs anytime. And then the interview of singer Binota Chakraborty (nee Vinita Amladi ) was published in July 2007 in the Listeners’ Bulletin of Hamraz ji, and it was revealed that it was she who had actually sung this song !

Similarly, the name of the Music Director Mohan Junior (Ajamil-48 and Dana pani-52) was treated as the cover-name of Music Director Madan Mohan. After about 60 years, it was proved that Mohan junior (Real name- Mohan Kanoji Rajpoot) was a Gujarati composer and a different person-and NOT Madan Mohan. Even Madhubala Jhaveri who sang for him also confirmed this in an answer to a Telephone call made to her.

It was commonly believed that the Music Director pair of ” VASANT-RAMCHANDRA ” ( Kalakar, Suhagan of 1954) was short forms of Vasant Desai and C.Ramchandra. The myth of almost 65 years was busted when it was revealed that C.Ramchandra himself had said, that it was not him and Vasant Desai, but they were Vasant Prabhu and Ramchandra Vadhavkar.

One more example is that of Child actor Shashi Kapoor. It was popularly believed that Shashi Kapoor (Deewar, Trishul,Dharmaputra fame) had acted as a child artist in about 25 films. This misinformation was cleared when the real child artist-Shashichand Kapoor gave an interview on Cineplot and Maitri Manthan, explaining that it was him who had acted in 21 films as child actor (Bhakta Prahlad-46 etc). Shashi Kapoor (Deewar wala) had actually done only 5 child roles-in Aag, Bhakta Bilwamangal, Patanga, Sangram and Aawara.

In case of today’s singer-Naseem Akhtar also, the same thing is happening. Till now, it was popularly believed that Naseem Akhtar is the sister of Sardar Akhtar( wife of Mehboob Khan) and Bahar Akhtar( wife of A.R.Kardar but it NOT TRUE !

Shri Kamalakar Pasupuleti, senior Film and music historian has informed me that Naseem was NOT their sister.

Both Sardar Akhtar-known as Daari and Bahar Akhtar-known as Beharo were tawayafs of Hiramandi Lahore. When A R Kardar eloped with Bahar Akhtar and married her, Sardar Akhtar registered a Police complaint of abduction. Kardar and his family were arrested and put in lock up. It was only after Bahar’s statement that she married Kardar on her own choice that they were released. Sardar Akhtar herself later married Mehboob Khan.

Naseem Akhtar’s father was a Sarangi player. they were originally from Kashmir. She was born in 1924. She started singing on Lahore Radio. Impressed with her singing style, composer Pt. Amarnath gave her a break in Nishani-1942. Till then she used to sing at rich persons’ functions and mehfils etc. After Nishani, she came to Bombay to sing for Khooni Laash-43. She never acted in any films. She sang in Bhai, Ek din ka Sultan, 40 karod, Flat no.9, Pehli nazar, Ratnavali, Dharma, Sanyasi, Tadbir, Shahjehan, Nek Parveen, Safar, Keemat, Sohni Mahiwal, Bhanwar, Ek Roz, Doli, Parai Aag etc. She sang for Naushad, Ghulam Mohd, Anil Biswas, Shyamsunder, Ghulam Hyder, Rafiq Ghaznavi, Govind Ram, Sajjad Hussain, Firoze Nizami and C.Ramchandra.

She left for Pakistan after Partition and sang in a few films, but was not successful. She got married and settled as a housewife. It seems that she died in Lahore on 11-5-2007 at the age of 87 years. Shri Kamalakar ji’s friend Mr. Sayeed Malik, a famous Film and Music Historian of Pakistan, had interviewed Naseem Akhatar and got information about her from her in person. Sayeed Malik’s articles on pre partition films/music are published on internet and some are available even today, on RMIM Archieves, for anyone to read. Sayeed Malik also died in 2007. ”

Film Nishani was made by Shorey pictures. It was produced and directed by Roop K Shorey. Aziz Kashmiri was the lyricist and Pt. Amarnath was the music director. It was the First Hindi film for Pt Amarnath as well. The cast of the film was, Majnu (real name was Harold Lewis-a favourite of Shorey.he paired with I S Johar later as a comedian), Ragini, M.D.Kanwar, Rooplekha, Rani, Mala etc.

Our younger readers may not be knowing about RAGINI.

The upturned curves of those eyes had magic in them. On top of that (literally!), her eyebrows accentuated that affect. Lotus Eyed or Aahoo Chashm Ragini, as she was called in the cinema world, took the world by storm, when she first appeared on the silver screen, back in the early 1940s.

Ragini was born Shamshad Begum, in 1923, at Gujranwala, in a bazaar, where, to quote that great sage, Agha Hashar, “Days are dormant and nights wide awake.” Her mother named her Shamshad Begum, and her father, Seth Diwan Parmanand, happily allowed a Muslim name. But, her mother died during her childhood, and Diwan took this young girl from Gujranwala to Lahore. Even this early, Ragini had the looks that made her noticeable. In those days, the classical sense of beauty was quite different. Large, sparkling eyes and a fair complexion was enough for any girl in the films to be termed beautiful. Aahoo Chashm Ragni and Pari Chehra Naseem (Saira Bano’s mother) were both considered the epitome of beauty, although young people question those attributes today as “just average”.

Ragini was not able to go to school for undisclosed reasons, although she had a happy childhood. Diwan Sahab’s good friend, Roop K. Shorey was a well known film maker, and one day, while visiting his house, he noticed the girl child. “Isn’t she cute?” he said. “She has the looks of a fine film actress.” Although Diwanjee had some reservations about allowing the girl to join the industry, Shorey pledged that he would look after her at every step of the shootings. In those days, there were very few girls in the industry. To find a seventeen year old girl as the heroine meant that you had hit the jackpot. Shorey cast Shamshad as Ragini, in Kamla Movietones’ Punjabi film, Dulla Bhatti in 1940. M.D. Kunwar was the hero, while Ragini played Nooran in the film. It was a hit and people were spellbound by her charm. Her next film, Sehti Murad did not make such a bang. She also did ‘himmat’ and ‘Raavipaar’. Later, she worked in many films before Partition, including her first Hindi film,Nishani-42,,naila,Anarkali,Poonji, Kaise Kahoon, Dasi, Shirin Farhad, farz and others. In A.R. Kardar’s film, Shahjahan, Ragini played Mumtaz Mehel, while her first hero, M. D. Kunwar, who had done Dulla Bhatt’s role, characterized Shahjahan with great aplomb. Kunwar was so enamoured of Ragini that he had requested Kardar for the role, to be close to Ragini. Unfortunately, Ragini did not respond to his romantic advances, and Kunwar sank himself in perpetual drunkenness, which led to his getting infected by tuberculosis and his death soon after that.

After Kardar’s Shahjhan, Ragini did a few more films before Partition, namely Nek Parveen, Farz, etc. Amongst these, director Narinjan’s film, Farz was Sudhir’s first film too, and Ragini played the lead with him. Ragini got married to mian Mohd. Aslam in 1945 and took a break for raising a family. After Partition, she migrated to pakistan and was welcomed with open arms in Pakistan. She worked as the heroine in films like Mundri, Akeli, Nazrana, Beqarar, Shararey, Mumtaz and Zanjeerin Pakistan. Radio Pakistan , during its creative days, used to play the hit songs of Beqarar, Naukar and Bedari in the 1960s. The song from producer S. Gul and director NazeerAjmeri’s 1950 film, Beqararis still played on the radio. It is phrased Dil ko laga ke kaheen thokar na khana. It was sung by Ali Bux Zahoor and Munawwar Sultana, and remains one of the earliest hit duets of Pakistani films.

Ragini was an expressive character actress, who did a variety of roles in films like Husn o Ishq, Anarkali, and Aab e Hayat She made a perfect Mumtaz Mehel in Naseem usSaqlain’s Taj Mehel, although she wore a half veil in some of the scenes. It was a remarkable spectacle, but flopped because the local audience could not understand its historical significance. A huge expense to uplift it, with superb costumes, apart from the details taken care of during the royal procession shown in the film, are its high point. Ragini was able to use her arching eyebrows and expressive eyes brilliantly in Taj Mahal. Much has been written about her intimacy with famous producer, S. Gul, but he always maintained and proved by his actions that he had sympathy and reverence for her and shared her grief and heart felt fondness for the good times she had spent in the undivided India.

Ragini was invited to India for doing two films,Chamkee-52 and Insaan-52. She did these and went back to Pakistan. Later she divorced her first husband and married producer Gul. Her last days in Pakistan were very sad. She was thrown out of her house by her Son in Law,as he did not want an actress in his house. She spent her last days in a small room in Lahore and died unsung on 27-2-2007 at the age of 85 years.

The story of NISHANI-42 was…

Not far from Lahore is a village, Desoo. There lives Ajit, the son of the Choudhari-a graduate without work. His father wants to get him married. But Ajit finds it ridiculous. He leaves the house to escape matrimonial bondage. Tired and fatigued he sleeps under a tree.

In Lahore- Lives an exact double of Ajit. Ranjit and his beautiful wife, Indira, are a happy couple enjoying each other’s love and devotion. Ranjit is a rich man and fond of excitement and adventure. . Ranjit bumps into Ajit. The collision leads to complications. Ranjit’s motor-bike runs out of control just where Ajit is lying asleep. The one is taken for the other. Ranjit gets caught among the villagers of Desoo and considered a lunatic. He is sent to Lahore asylum. Ajit is taken for Ranjit and is removed to house.

Ajit is dazed to find himself married without marriage. He wants to avoid Indira, the wife of Ranjit. Doctor Ganesh Das puts him down as an unhinged brain. But Ajit knows he has to act under the circumstances. And as usual, the youngman finds love the only thing for a useful diversion. He makes friends with one L.Kishori Lal whose sister Leela easily takes for him. Indira comes to know about the proposed `remarriage’ of her `husband’.

But all her efforts to avert this crisis are of no avail. The pair makes good to escape. Ajit and Leela are enjoying their honey-moon in the Green Hotel. On the other hand, Ranjit manages to escape from the lunatic asylum and comes to town. Here again Ranjit and Ajit exchange their identities.

Ajit is at a barber’s shop when taken for Ranjit, the runaway lunatic. Ranjit is claimed by Leela at Greens. Ranjit knows there is a mistake but cannot help it and there is a terrible row. In the midst of this scene jumps the party headed by Indira and Kishori Lal, chasing Leela Ajit. And then someone calls the Police too.

Finally, it is Indira who checks the Birthmarks of Ranjit and declares him as the Right Ranjit. Thus she gets Ranjit. Then Ajit is brought from the Assylum and identified by the birthmarks by Leela. He is also certified. This way the ‘Nishanis’ or the Birthmarks save everyone( including the audience) and the film ends on a Happy note.

Let us now enjoy this DEBUT SONG of singer Naseem Akhtar from this film. This rare song was procured and uploaded on You Tube by our Sudhir ji. He has also supplied the Hindi and English Lyrics of the song. Thank you Sudhir ji.

I am hearing this song for the first time. Her singing does not give an impression that it was her debut song. In fact, her singing in deep voice has enhanced the beauty of this song of simple melody.

Nishaani (1942) was also Zeenat Begum’s debut Hindi film as a playback singer as per Vidur Sury’s list of her songs which appeared on Cineplot. Since I could not locate her song of this film on YT, this needs to be confirmed.

Kamath ji,
Her singing seems mature, ( may be ) because she had been singing on Radio and as a professional singer in mehfils and programmes of the rich and affluents for quite some time. This is what I think.
Further,Zeenat begum started her singing career from Poonji-1943,under Ghulam Hyder. The song was’ Ab koi toote hue dil ka sahara na rahaa’ (as per Swaron ki yatra).
Anyway,as per HFGK,there seems to be no song of Zeenat Begum in Nishani-42.
I have also seen Vidur Sury’s comment-as you said- but then he has missed the boat in many cases.

Zeenat Begum sang in at least 5 songs I know of in NISHANI (1942) that I have in my collection. Cineplot has credited G. M. Durrani as the male voice, but it sounds much more like S. D. Batish. Keep in mind she also sang in MANGTI (1942) and GAWANDI (1942), both Punjabi films. Here are the NISHANI (1942) songs:

(1) Dheere dheere aa jaa o baanke sipahiya (with S. D. Batish, Naseem Akhtar, and chorus)
(2) Hui dil mein paidaa jalan meetthi meetthi (with Shamshad Begum and Naseem Akhtar)
(3) Zaraa dheere dheere haan zaraa haule haule (with S. D. Batish and chorus)
(4) Yeh kya sun rahi hoon ke tu bewafaa hai (solo)
(5) Woh hamen tadpaa rahen hain kya karen kya karen (solo)

Shalin ji,

This is a great information. Looks like you have these records with you,so it is a genuine information.
I have mentioned that as per HFGK, she is not credited with any songs in this film.
However, your info must be more accurate.
Thanks a lot,sir.

Sadanand ji,
If shalin ji’s info is correct, then your observation is also correct that this song does not sound like her debut song.

Arunji,
You have collated some information of great historical importance. Congratulations. Interestingly, today itself earlier in the day I read the story about Naseem Akhtar being sister of Sardar Akhtar etc., in one of the earlier posts on this blog. I am sure that would be corrected.

The singer of this song is not Naseem Akhtar, but rather Zeenat Begum. Listen to the way the lines “khushiyon ki barsaaten thi, aashaaon ka moti gir kar phoot gayaa” and “saajan ham se rootth gaye” are sung. It is highly characteristic of Zeenat Begum, not Naseem Akhtar.
