Men, they say, are from Mars. I am sure all the lady friends and readers on this blog will readily agree. No doubt when they need favors from their better halves, the pleading, hang-dog look on their faces is really very “maasoom”. But when they are in their own swing, well then the head is in the sky, and the whole creation is tiny and petty in comparison. Or so they say.

The trait of arrogance is very native to the masculine psyche. They take the epithets of the ‘Lord’ and the ‘Lady’ quite literally and, yes what else, they will behave like one. They will foist their ‘Lordship’ on everyone and believe themselves to be the ‘Lord’ of everything they survey. These adages from time immemorial are not just conversation pieces, and are not baseless. These adages are brimming with social wisdom harvested over centuries of existence.

History bears out this phenomena, and simply adds to it, era by era. One will read about a thousand heroes, and then maybe just one Joan of Arc. One will read about a thousand warriors, and then maybe one Rani Laxmibai. The roles that have traditionally been set aside, were never meant to leverage superiority. In every social dictum, these roles basically started off as a division of labour and responsibilities, for clearly it is not feasible to sustain social structures singlehandedly. As they say in India – ‘grahasthi ki gaadi, aur us ke do pahiye’ – the wagon of household runs on two wheels. And any driver worth his grease knows, the wheels must be “aligned” and must be “balanced” and must have the “same pressure”. For else, the ride would be very wobbly – and that is a matter of common experience.

But hey, who would teach that to or try to convince the males of this world. The balance remains only till the time their need based and convenience based things have to be taken care of. Once that is done, well then the bull will rise from the grass, and let it be known as to who is in-charge.

And so this age old standoff remains. Shakespeare immortalized, or shall I say controversial-ized this for eternity, in his creation – “Taming of the Shrew”. If the “shrew” of Katherina is the central theme of the play, then the stubborn and high handed Petruchio ought not be discounted, for in the final analysis of the Bard, it is the arrogance of the male that emerges victorious. Claimants to imitation may be many, but really how many males, ‘Petruchios’ that they are, have actually faced a real ‘Katherine’ in life. The argument is a toss-up, and the fact is – the ‘Petruchio’ simply does not go away.

And what does that do to love. Aah, the flavors are many. The same Rocky who is thankful for “Tumne Mujhe Dekha Ho Kar Meharbaan” is also the same Shyam who tosses the challenge “Haseen Ho Tum Khudaa Nahin Ho, Tumhaara Sajdaa Nahin Karenge”. The same Prakash who croons to conquer – “O Mere Dil Ke Chain, Chain Aaye Mere Dil Ko Duaa Kijiye” is the same Dharma who will disdainfully dismiss “Arre Jaana Hai To Jaao, Manaayenge Nahin” (‘Bandhan’, 1969). The same suitor who dares family pronouncements to shred his heart in tears in “Dil Jaltaa Hai To Jalne De” is the same ‘Aashiq’ who will sing this song – “Maashooq Har Jagah Hain Aashiq Kahin Kahin”.

A very rare find from the 1941 film ‘Shaadi’. Of all the 14 songs that Khemchand Prakash tuned for this film, this is the only song that he got Motilal to render for himself. As an actor, Motilal has been active in the industry since the early 1930s. In the early part of his career from 1933-34, till early 1940s, he has also sung a few songs for himself to perform on screen. This song is one of them.

The film is from the Ranjeet Movietone stables, and is directed by Jayant Desai. The cast of actors is listed as Madhuri, Moti Lal, Khurshid, Ishwar Lal, Dixit, Ghori, Bhagwan Das, Kanti Lal, Bhoopat Rai, Tara Bai, Brijmala, Keshari, Baby Kamla and others. The words for the fourteen songs of this film are written by DN Madhok and Munshi Dil. However, the records do not specify which song is written by whom. The music is by Khemchand Prakash.

The rendering of the song, coupled with the image of the type of natural actor Motilal was, one can clearly visualize how this song is being performed by him on screen. The words so explicitly speak to the arrogance of male supremacy as the privileged high and mighty lover, expressing disdain for the ‘dime-a-dozen beloveds’ –

tum se to sainkadon hain
mujh sa koi nahin
There are hundreds like you
Ah, but none like me

Wow, that must have taken a heart of lead and the (mindless) courage of a wayward bull to proclaim these lines.

In any case, whichever side you are as a reader, let us enjoy this real treat of a rare rendering in a voice that probably has not sung more than 20 or 30 songs in films. No votes, no conclusions, no verdicts – just the eternal tussle – Men are from Mars and Women are from Atlantis. 😀 😀
