Here comes the song no. 9 of the series, which is the oldest song so far. I am actually indebted to Sudhir Kapoor Sir, for suggesting this song for the series. This was not available on youtube. Sir was kind enough to upload the song and he also provided the lyrics both in English and Hindi script.
The era prior to era of playback singers was all about singing stars. I knew only Suraiyya and Sehgal. Kuchh pataa nahin hotaa hai tab bhi ham samajhte hain ke hamen sab kuchh pataa hai. Somebody has rightly said that it is possible for some people to know everything some of the time and know something at all times, but not possible for any one to be so knowledgeable that they know all things at all times. Hopefully I have managed the gist of the wise quote correctly here.
It is simply because the factual position keeps changing, growing and reducing, dividing and regrouping.
The song being presented is ‘kaahe ko nain milaaye nain milaane waale’. It is from the film Din Raat (1945). It is produced under the banner of Navyug Chitrapat Ltd. and is directed by Shori Daulatavi. List of actors includes Snehparbha Pradhan, Paresh Bannerji, Sulochana Chatterjee, Vasant Thengadi, Firoza, Dar Kashmiri and others.
So the singer actors performing this song are Snehprabha Pradhan and Paresh Bannerjee. Snehprabha Pradhan is no stranger to this blog as she is listed in the list of singers with 5 songs. I did not find the name of Paresh Bannerjee in the list, so this must be his first song to be posted here. Lyricist Santokh Nadeem and music director Dada Chandekar are also new names for me. The lyricist name is there in the list on the stats page as Santokh Nadim, which must be the same person. There is another lyricist named Santokh Singh. Could it be Santokh Singh ‘Naadim’ ? ‘Naadim ‘ means ‘apologetic’ or ‘ full of regret ‘. Another word for it in urdu is ‘pashemaan’. As the name Santokh Singh sounded familiar I seached for more information. I found this page about Santokh Singh ‘Dheer’ (1920-2010). One wonders if it is the same poet.
Dada Chandekar also has 5 songs in the blog, including one song from this film ‘Din Raat’.
Only audio link of this song too, but the rare song is uniquely enjoyable.
