Nain mere tum sang laage ji

A song that I had explored and located, albeit very delayed for the purpose. This song fits in so well with the ‘Nain Laage’ series that Nahm ji has treated us with, in the recent past. By the time I was able to locate this song and upload it, Nahm ji had already dropped the curtain on the series. And so, with her permission, I am posting this song directly.

The song is from an obscure film from 1947, that is taking its place on this blog for the first time today. The film is ‘Aarsi’ from 1947. The word ‘aarsi’ in Hindi means ‘mirror’ or ‘aaina’. In some ways, a unique name for a film. I wonder what may have been the theme and storyline of the film. I tried to search for more info on this movie, but have drawn a blank so far, from the online resources. I request our knowledgeable friends on the blog to add more information about this film.

Produced under the banner of Jeewan Pictures, the film is directed by Daud Chand. There are eleven songs in this film, all written by Saarshaar Sailaani. The music composition is shared between Shyam Sunder and Lachhiram. The music of this song is composed by Lachhiram. The list of actors includes Meena, Al Nasir, Ajmal, Asha Posle, Ramlal, Zahoor Shah, Kamla, Iqbal, P N Bali, Chandrashekhar, Bheemsen, Kukku, Pran etc. The first name in this list, Meena, could be Meena Shorey, but that is just a guess from my side.

The singing voices are those of Zeenat Begum and Munawwar Sultana (the singer Munawwar Sultana and not the actress). The Geet Kosh does not list information about the singers, and the source is inputs and comments from knowledgeable friends. Regarding the singing voices, there is some discussion, as it has also been suggested by another comment that the second voice could be Dilshad Begum. Once again, I request our more knowledgeable readers and friends to provide inputs to help clarify / confirm the names of the singers.

The song is an exchange between two lady friends. One of them is smitten in love and is waiting for her beau. She complains about his indifference towards her situation – that she is crying and waiting for him all day long, and he is probably comfortably sleeping.

Listen and enjoy.

Sudhir ji,

Thanks for a song from the 40s.
1. The song is sung by only Zeenat begum with chorus. This is confirmed by shri Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji,who has this 78 RPM record and is an expert in identifying old time singers.
2. As far as my information goes,Munawwar Sultana, the singer from Pakistan has sung very few songs in India, mostly in 1945 and 46. She never came here in 1947 nor has she sung any song in India in and after 1947.So, I feel she may not be one of the singers here. Cineplot describes the song as a duet of Zeenat and Dilshad Begum. I however dare not trust info from cineplot in this case.
3. The ‘Meena’ in this film is indeed meena Shorey-only thing is that she had not yet become shorey. In this film, she met Al Nasir and married him, only to take a divorce within 1 year due to Al Nasir’s womanising traits.
4.One surprise for you !
The actor ‘ Bheemsen’ in the credits is no one else other than Lyricist SARASHAR SAILANI. Yes,his real name was Bheemsen.

Arun ji,

Thanks for your detailed comment, full of so much additional information, as always.

Regards to the singers voices, it is quite clear that there are two main female singers in this song. And actually it is Girdharilal ji himself who has confirmed to me that the second singing voice to be Munawwar Sultana. He left this information in a comment on the YouTube page for this song, and then we followed up with email exchange to confirm. And as I mentioned in the write up, another comment immediately followed, this time by Vidur Sury ji, suggesting that the second voice may be Dilshad Begum. I am going with the information provided by Girdharilal ji, for the same reason as you suggest. I also acknowledge his expertise in this area.

So Saarshar Sailaani is also an actor with the name ‘Bheemsen’. I would also like to share that as one browses the Geet Kosh entries, especially in the 1930s and 40s, one comes across many names which sound very suspiciously same as some individuals who are better known as lyricists and music directors.

Thanks again, for continuing to add information in all ways possible.
