“Raahi”(1953) was a Naya Sansaar Production movie. It was directted by K A Abbas. The movie had Dev Anand, Nalini Jaiwant, Habib Tanvir, Balraj Sahni, K. Sethi, Manmohan Krishnan, Achla Sachdev, S. Michael, Rasheed, Shaukat Hashmi, David Abraham etc in it.
Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.
Today (31 may 2014) is the 11th death anniversary of Anil Biswas (7 july 1914-31 may 2003). On this occasion, here is the fifth song from “Raahi” (1953).
Though the video of this song is available, its quality is not upto the mark. It is difficult to make out the lyrics of this song. Lata, Meena Kapoor and Hemant Kumar are supposed to have sung this song. Hemant Kumar’s voice can be identified, but identifying the female voices in a togh job. Moreover, the song also contains at least one unidentified male voice.
Lyrics are written by Prem Dhawan. Music is composed by Anil Biswas.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.
The audio of the song are quite poor and it is difficult to make out the lyrics. As a result, good chunk of the song have remained undecipherable and represented as ??? in the lyrics.
Only one source of this song seems to be available. Unless a better quality source material of this song becomes available, it will be a tall order to decipher the lyrics of the song accurately.
Nevertheless, I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the missing words and lines as well as suggest corrections in the lyrics of this song.

When I read the write up by Atul ji, I just thought I will take a listen to this song and help with the words. Realizing that the current posted link does have audio problems, I first checked into my collection to look for this song. I checked with the Geet Kosh, and noted with interest that this song appears as no less than 4 different parts in the song list for this film. I was intrigued. I started looking for the different pieces, and will some effort I am able to locate all the four pieces. I have combined them into a single recording. The resulting song is more than eight minutes long.
It appears that this song may have appeared maybe two or even three different occasions in the film. Or maybe even sung at a single stretch. The combined song as a single entity flow quite naturally and does not have any noticeable breaks. The transition between the different parts is fairly smooth.
The interesting part of this song is the number of singing voices. Besides the noted singers i.e. Hemant Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, and Meena Kapoor, there are two more (yes two, not just one) unidentified male voices. The fourth voice joins in the fourth part of the song, which is now part of the combined song that I have uploaded. The third voice already identified sings just three lines and then does not appear again. But in the latter half of the song, Hemant Kumar and the second unidentified male voice have significant singing lines. My intuition is that the second unidentified male voice could well be the music director Anil Biswas himself.
The recordings that I have been able to acquire are much more clear, and hence almost all lyrics are noted. But there is one line that I am just not able to catch despite the fact that I have spent almost a few hours just on this one line (marked with (??) in the lyrics noted). I request readers and friends to please help to decipher it.
In its entirety, it is quite a wondrous song. Through the lyrics, one can conjure up the entire world of migrant labor, their working conditions and their tribulations. Coming from Prem Dhawan, and especially teamed up with director KA Abbas and music director Anil Biswas, nothing less is expected, given the leftist and socialistic mind set and their roots in the IPTA movement. The song tells of a labor class that is oppressed by outsiders (“bidesiya”) who are not their own people. The men and women of the working class have left their homes in search of work and earnings, to keep body and soul together.

The song moves on to tell of the cruel work masters.

Then in the latter half of the song, the tone changes and becomes more assertive and rebellious. A new refrain is added to the singing
hamaare bhi to din hain aanewaale
The defiance emerges in the second half of the song, as the singers now dare to challenge the authority of the work masters, warning them of how the leaves and buds will become weapons in the fight against oppression.

As I said earlier, a wondrous song this one turns out to be. In the stretch of 8 minutes, the creators have painted the whole story about the repression of the working class and their revolt against the mindless cruelties of the rich work masters. Certainly, a lot of food for thought.

Atul ji,
As I tried to work on the lyrics of this song, I found some interesting things. Firstly, the complete song is somewhat longer than what is posted. And secondly, there is one more singing voice that appears in the later part of the song, I have been able to upload the more complete version of this song.
I have sent you the complete lyrics in English and Hindi separately in email. Accompanying that is a brief write up that I request to please add to the post.
As worked on this song and listened to it thoroughly, I find this to be a wondrous song. Many thanks Avinash ji, for brining it up for posting here.

@ Sudhir ji – Sir, many many thanks for the post and the complete lyrics of this song. I cannot express in words what i am feeling now after i have this special post from you for this song. Another award for me on ‘ASAD’.
I had shared this song to Atul ji , when i was just few months old contributor on this blog. at that time i had not started checking details with ‘myswar.com’ and at that time i think i had also not tried for more links by broadening the search.
On 31st May on Anil Biswas ji’s anniversary i had requested Atul ji to post this as our rememberance on the blog. After that i thought that i would also complete the missing words. And when i checked on myswar.com i find that this song is listed as Part-I & II as ‘ek kali aur do pattiyaan’ and another seperate song as ‘Zulm dhaa le tu sitam dhaa le’, making this song as THREE part song. But now i understand that it is more than that. also in our initial post i had not mentioned Lata ji as one of the singer in this song.
And with your post i think this song has very rightly been presented as it deserves to be !!! Thanks Again !
