Today is 10 august 2014 and the festival of Raakhi falls today. Seeing that this day is not declared as a holiday in most offices, it helps if this festival falls on the weekend, like how it is this time, when it has fallen on a sunday.

This is the seventh Rakhi festival for the blog and we have discussed Rakhi songs in the blog on all such occasions.

The first Rakhi festival for this blog was on saturday 16 august 2008, following in the wake of the independence day on the previous day while the next day was sunday. I still remember that first Rakhi festival for the blog. The blog used to post just one song a day those days and I had specifically planned to post a special Rakhi song-namely- Bhaiyya mere raakhi ke bandhan ko nibhaana(Chhoti Bahan)(1959). I had hoped that this song would enable me to attract record breaking readers on that day. Indeed, this blog which used to see visitors in two figures daily attracted just under 200 visitors that day, which was a new high for the blog those days. 🙂 These days we get such number of visitors in one hour, but it was a big breakthrough for the blog those days and I was as overjoyed that day as Raakhi sellers. 🙂

In 2009, this festival fell on 5 august. Another iconic Rakhi song was discussed that day, which was Bahnaa ne bhaayi ki kalaayi se pyaar baandhaa hai (Resham Ki Dori)(1974).

It was a coincidence that both the Rakhi songs were Shankar Jaikishan compositions, created 15 years apart.

In 2010, Rakhi festival fell on August 24. As many as six Rakhi songs were discussed on that day, and what songs they were ! They were songs like Mere bhaiyya ko sandeshaa pahunchaanaa (Didi)(1959) , rang birangi raakhi leke aayi behnaa (Anpadh) , Abke baras bhejo bhaiyya ko baabul (Bandini) , Mere bhaiyya mere chandaa mere anmol ratan (Kaajal) , Phoolon kaa taaron kaa sabkaa kehnaa hai (Hare Rama Hare Krishnaa) , and Ye raakhi bandhan hai aisaa ye raakhi bandhan hai aisaa (Beimaan) . These awesome Rakhi festival songs were been penned by Sahir Ludhianvi (two of them), Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Shailendra, Anand Bakshi and Verma Malik and were composed by N Datta, Madan Mohan, S D Burman, Ravi, R D Burman and Shankar Jaikishan. The songs were sung by Lata (four)and Asha Bhonsle (two), with Kishore Kumar and Mukesh figuring in two songs. So almost the entire cream of HFM era artists have been involved in creating iconic rakhi songs that are remembered to this day.

In 2011, 13 august was the day for Rakhi festival. Five Raakhi festival songs were discussed on that day. They included Rakhiyaa bandhwaa le bhaiyya (Actor)(1951), Raakhi kehti hai tumse bhaiyya (Ek Phool Ek Bhool) , Meri bhi koi behna hoti (Do Khilaadi), O meri laadli pyaari behna (Aatish) and Meri behna deewaani hai (Andhaa Kaanoon) .

If one thought that all Rakhi festival songs from Hindi movies were exhaused by then ,the reply came the next year on 2 August 2012 when the Rakhi festival day saw as many as six more Rakhi songs discussed. They were Raakhi ka aaya tyohaar sakhi (Raakhi)(1949), Raakhi dhaagon ka tyohaar (Raakhi)(1962), Chanda re mere bhaiyya se kehna (Chambal Ki Kasam)(1980), Meri behna ye raakhi ki laaj (Ghar Dwaar)(1985), Mujhe maaf karna Om Sai Ram (Insaaniyat Ke Dushman)(1987) and Hum behnon ke liye mere bhaiyya (Anjaana).

In 2013, Rakhi festival was on 20 August. Four more Rakhi songs were discussed this time. They were Aa birna morey birna (Samaaj)(1954), Meri raakhi ki rakhiyo tu aan re (Naya Kaanoon)(1965), Raakhi ke din waada karo waada nibhaaoge (Pyaari Behna)(1985) and Maata bhi tu pitaa bhi tu (Vatan Ke Rakhwaale).

The above list of 23 Rakhi songs is all one needs if you have to present a TV programme on Rakhi. All songs discussed by TV channels on this occasions are bound to be from the above list. But we in this blog do not repeat the same song. So we have to search for other Rakhi songs to discuss on the occasion. One rare song from 1936 has already been discussed by Sudhir ji today. Here is another rare Rakhi song. This song is from “Jeene Do” (1948). The song is sung by Geeta Dutt and Shankar Dasgupta. shewan Rizvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naashaad.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Only the audio of this song is available. The audio is a recording from a radio station (SLBC, most likely). Unless a better quality recording of this song is available, this is all we have as far as this rare Rakhi festival song is concerned. Poor quality or not, this song is a lovely song to listen to.

Song-Raakhi ka mausam aaya re (Jeene Do)(1948) Singers-Geeta Dutt, Shankar Dasgupta, Lyrics-Shewan Rizvi, MD-Naashaad

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

raakhi ka mausam aaya re
banjaare raakhi bandh le
o o o
raakhi ka mausam aaya re
banjaare raakhi bandh le

chandra des se aaya ri banjaara
rakhi bandh de
chandra des se aaya ri banjaara
raakhi bandh de
o o o

raakhi ka mausam aaya re
banjaare raakhi baandh le

ek baras se aas lagaaye
ek baras se aas lagaaye
baithhi thhi main nain bichhaaye
baithhi thhi main nain bichhaaye
aaj tumhen jo maangna hai
maang le
ae ae ae
aaj tumhen jo maangna hai
maang le
maang meri meri albeli
raakhi bandh le
o o o

raakhi ka mausam aaya re
banjaare raakhi baandh le…..

preet ka jag mein
preet ka jag mein kuchh nahin mol
bol de hanske bas do bol
bol de hanske bas do bol
aur behna kehke
baanhe gale mein daal de
daal de re banjaara
raakhi bandh le
ho o o
raakhi ka mausam aaya re
banjaare raakhi bandh le

mera bhi tu ek kehna maane
ae ae
ae ae
ae ae
ho
ab na jaiyo des begaane
ab na jaiyo des begaane
gar maan sake to itna
kehna maan le
maan le re banjaare
raakhi baandh le
o o
raakhi ka mausam aaya re
albeli raandhi baandh le
o o o

raakhi ka mausam aaya re
banjaare raakhi baandh le
