Chandni Raaten – Song no. 3
———————————

‘Have you ever seen such stars?’ she asked.

‘You asked me that last night. You need some new material.’

‘Well, they’re worth a second mention.’

‘Don’t get the appeal myself,’ he said. ‘Then again I’m not in the least bit romantic. As far as I’m conecrned stars are stars.’

‘You forget I haven’t seen these exact stars in a very long time. If you see there, low in the east Pisces, the fish, and Cetus, the whale, Mira, a star within Cetus periodically changes its brightness.’

‘Don’t tell me you studied astronomy too.’

‘Only enough basic concepts of astronomy and astrophysics to pass the Harvard post-grad written placement examination. But by then I also realised how much appllied maths and how little star-gazing would be involved in the post-grad studies, so I let it go.’

‘Big shock.’

‘These stars are special because they only look like this in this part of the world. Looking up at the Milky Way, arching across the sky from north-east to south-west, I know I’m home. See?’

‘Nothing I did’nt learn at the school trip to the Planetarium so far, Ms Ivy League. I’d ask for my money back if I was you.’

‘Fine. Then look directly overhead and you’ll see Capricorns, the sea-goat, and Aquarius, the water carrier.’

‘And over there,’ she said, ‘towards the south-west there’s that Southern Cross. It can’t be seen from the northern hemisphere yet its visible here throughout the entire year. It never disappears below the horizon. Isn’t that something?’

‘It’s gorgeous.’

Song-Kyun khoye khoye chaand ki firaaq mein (Khoya Khoya Chaand)(2007) Singers-Swanand Kirkire, Ajay Jhingran, Lyrics-Swanand Kirkire, Music-Shantanu Moitra
Chorus

Lyrics

Aaj shab jo chaand ne
hai roothhne ki thhaan lee
gardishon mein hain sitaare
baat ham ne maan lee
andheri siyaah zindagi ko soojhti nahin gali
ke aaj haathh thhaam lo
ek haathh ki kami khali

kyun…..
khoye khoye chaand ki firaaq mein
talaash mein udaas hai dil
kyun…..
apne aap se khafaa khafaa
zara zara sa naaraaz hai dil
ye manzilen bhi khud hi tay karen
ye faasle bhi khud hi tay karen
kyun..
to raaston pe phir saham saham
sambhal sambhal ke chaltaa hai ye dil
kyun…..
khoye khoye chaand ki firaaq mein
talaash mein udaas hai dil

zindagi sawaalon ke jawaab dhoondhne chali
jawaab mein sawaalon ki ek lambi si ladi mili
sawaal hi sawaal hain
soojhti nahin gali
ke aaj haathh thhaam lo
ek haathh ki kami khali

jee mein aata hai
murdaa sitaare noch loon oon oon
idhar bhi noch loon
udhar bhi noch loon oon oon
ek do ka zikr kyaa
main saare noch loon
main saare noch loon
idhar bhi noch loon
udhar bhi noch loon
sitaare noch loon
main saare noch loon
idhar bhi noch loon
udhar bhi noch loon
sitaare noch loon
main saare noch loon
kyun…
tu aaj itnaa wehshi hai
mizaaj mein majaaz hai
ae gham-e-dil
kyun…..
apne aap se khafaa khafaa
zara zara sa naaraaz hai dil
ye manzilen bhi khud hi tay karen
ye faasle bhi khud hi tay karen
kyun..
to raaston pe phir saham saham
(raaston pe phir saham saham)
sambhal sambhal ke chaltaa hai ye dil
(sambhal sambhal ke chaltaa hai ye dil)

kyun…..
khoye khoye chaand ki talaash mein
firaaq mein udaas hai dil
(khoye khoye chaand ki talaash mein
firaaq mein udaas hai dil)

dil ko samjhaana
keh do kyaa
aasaan hai
dil ko fitrat se sun lo na
beimaan hai
ye khush nahin hai jo milaa
bas maangtaa hi hai chalaa
jaantaa hai har lagi ka
dard hi hai bas ik silaa aaa
jab kabhi ye dil lagaa
dard hi hamen milaa
dil ki har lagi ka sun lo
dard hi hai ik silaa
jab kabhi ye dil lagaa
dard hi hamen milaa
dil ki har lagi ka sun lo
dard hi hai ik silaa

kyun
naye naye se dard ki firaaq mein
talaash mein udaas hai dil
kyun…..
apne aap se khafaa khafaa
zara zara sa naaraaz hai dil
ye manzilen bhi khud hi tay karen
ye faasle bhi khud hi tay karen
kyun..
to raaston pe phir saham saham
sambhal sambhal ke chaltaa hai ye dil
kyun
khoye khoye chaand ki firaaq mein
talaash mein udaas hai dil
kyun…..
apne aap se khafaa khafaa
zara zara sa naaraaz hai dil
ye manzilen bhi khud hi tay karen
ye faasle bhi khud hi tay karen
kyun..
to raaston pe phir saham saham
(kyun…..raaston pe phir saham saham)
sambhal sambhal ke chaltaa hai ye dil

It is interesting to compare Swanand Kirkire’s verses of this song with Majaaz Lacknawi’s verses in his ‘Aawaara’ :

Swanand Khirkhire

jee mein aata hai
murdaa sitaare noch loon oon oon
idhar bhi noch loon
udhar bhi noch loon oon oon
ek do ka zikr kyaa
main saare noch loon
main saare noch loon

Majaaz Lucknawi

jee mein aata hai murda chaand taare noch loon
iss kinaare noch loon uss kinaare noch loon
ek do ka zikr kyaa saare ke saare noch loon
ae gham-e-dil kya karoon, ae vahshat-e-dil kya karoon

There seems to be a hint by Swanand Kirkire in the song itself to discreetly acknowledge the source:

tu aaj itnaa wehshi hai
mizaaj mein ‘majaaz’ hai
ae gham-e-dil

This ‘chaand’ song is one of my very few favourite songs from the Hindi films of 21st century.

Still he should be booked under plagiarism laws as he got the proceeds and royalty and not Majaz Lacknawi.

I have the highest respect for Mr. Nitin Shah but on this account I would beg to differ from him.
It is not as if Swanand Kirkire has copied a huge portion of Majaz’s immortal Ghazal. He has also not shied away from acknowledging Majaz’s debt.
He admits that he has been inspired by Majaz and this creation is the child of that mood.

But Shah saheb is entitled to his views just as I will cling to my humble opinion.

Thank you very much Nahm saheb for uploading this song.
I have not seen this movie nor took much notice of this song, which I consciously listened to for the first time only now through courtesy of your post.
The song is much in the same tempo as the Gulaal song and the overall effect is quite pleasing.

Nahm ji
Nice selection of song,
I love the title of the movie itself “Khoya Khoya chaand”

I haven`t seen the full film, but I have seen portions of this movie. From whatever I have seen, I have liked the aura created by the director(I like Sudhir Mishra`s direction very much-He has created the scenes pertaining to the bygone era of Hindi movie industry very well in this movie ) of the movie. Thanks for reminding me the song and all the details about the song.

I also like the music of Shantanu Moitra in
Leela(2002)Yahaan(2005),Parineeta(2002),Hazaaron Kwaishein Aissi(2002),3 Idiots

Shantanu Moitra & Gulzar created some of my favourite songs in Yahaan(2005->Naam ada likhna,Urzu Durkut)

I also like the creations of Swanand Kirkire.

Thanks again for bringing up the song to the blog.

Prakashchandra ji,

I agree with your summation of the film having seen it than. The song has been a favourite since the movie released. Shantanu Moitra and Swanand Kirkire have done few films music but all of them were appreciated.
