“Funtoosh” (1956) was directed by Chetan Anand for Navketan. This movie had Dev Aannd, Sheila Ramani, K N Singh, Kumkum, Bhagwan Sinha, Jaggi, Abu Bakar, Bheemji Bhai, etc in it.
Six songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is a song from this movie. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle. It is picturised as a club dance song on Kumkum. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.
The music sounds quite O P Nayarish to me, including the usage of Asha Bhonsle for all female playbacks, irrespective of the actress lip suncing in her voice. Thus we had Sheila Ramanai as well as Kumkum lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in different songs of this movie.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

FANTOOSH was the first movie in which the credits appeared in cartoon form and it was a big draw. Then, I remember, DULHA DULHAN, had such cartoonish credit titles. Talking of credit titling, films in Hindi, probably, are the only films in which the credits appear in other language. This was caused because of the rift between Urdu-walas and Hindi-walas as Urdu-walas said the film is in Urdu and not Hindi and Hindi walas said the film is in Hindi. So both agreed on using English as the language for Credits. Madhuri, the Hindi film magazine, started a crusade for credits to be shown in Hindi, Tarachand Barjatiya of Rajshree followed. But Rajshree’s films under Sooraj have gone back to English titles. There are many other interesting trivia in connection with credits. Ashok Kumar insisted that his name should appear first in the list of stars, irrespective of his role in the film. So even in JEWEL THIEF, his name appears before Dev Anand’s. Pran was such a big star draw that his name always appeared ” And Pran” at the last of list of leading stars. Raj Kapoor always gave Nargis the first credit in his films, AAG, BARSAT, AWARA, AAH, and SHRI 420, otherwise the Hero’s name appeared before the Heroine’s name. There was no system of end credits as we see them now.
