In our film industry, there were two types of actors. One-who were lucky and did not have to struggle at all to become successful as a Hero and Two-those who had to struggle hard to be a hero and successful. We are NOT talking about actors like Raj Kapoor, Shammi or Shashi kapoor or R D Burman, for whom already there was a base made by their fathers in the industry facilitating their acceptance and opportunities. However there are examples like Mehmood -son of a successful actor Mumtaz Ali and some other star sons who had to struggle hard to create their own space in the industry.

From category one, there are actors who were good looking like Motilal, Bharat Bhooshan, Karan Dewan, Pradeep Kumar or Shekhar etc. But from this lot I would consider only Motilal and Shekhar as the lucky ones because they had no filmy background or any other connection, yet they bagged their Debut film as Hero ! That too opposite the Top Heroines of their times !!

The other three had their brothers producing films for them. Jaimini Dewan made films for Karan Dewan, Kalidas for Pradeep Kumar and Chandra for Bharat Bhushan. Actor Shekhar (Real name-Indriya Daman) had no such brother. Born on 8-10-1923, at Dehradoon, he did his schooling in Meerut and Graduation from Agra university. Then he worked as an Announcer in All India Radio, Delhi. He came to Bombay with a desire to act in films. He got Hero’s role in Devendra Goel’s first production,” Aankhen”-1950, opposite his own dreamgirl Nalini Jaywant. Composer Madan Mohan also made his debut with Aankhen-50. Inspite of 3 debutants, the film became a Hit. The 5′ 8″ tall, fair and handsome actor became a star overnight.

Shekhar became very famous when he sang “Tujhe kya sunaun main dilruba” from film Aakhri daaon-58( melody made by Madan Mohan and inspired by Sajjad Husain’s ‘ye hawa ye raat ye chandni’ from the film Sangdil,in Talat’s voice). Shekhar was a very lucky person. In one of the interviews he gave in 1956, he himself has recounted incidents where his luck helped him. This interview can be read on Cineplot. After leaving films, Shekhar looked after his production and Distribution business, expanding it further. Shahid Latif was his close friend and when Shahid made his first film Darwaza-54, he gave the distribution rights for Delhi and U.P. of this film to his friend Shekhar. Thus started his business even while he was still acting. Shekhar acted in about 35 films.

In the film Darwaza-54,his Heroine was Shyama. It was her first film as a Heroine. Shyama (Real name Khursheed Akhtar) was born on 7-6-1935 at Lahore. Her family shifted to Bombay and her father started a business of fruits and vegetables in Byculla market in Bombay. He was very orthodox in nature. Shyama was very much interested in films. She learnt Kathak dance from Badriprashad. One day she and her family went to see a film shooting of Zeenat, in Shree sound studios. There the director Shaukat Hussain spotted her and asked her if she would do acting. She was ready. Keeping her father ignorant about her acting, she completed the famous Zeenat qawwaali shooting. When her father came to know about it, he was annoyed, but he was pacified by her siblings and mother. But he was an orthodox person and though she earned millions later on, he did not touch a single paisa of her earnings till he died !

From 1945 to 1952, Shyama did 34 films, mainly doing bit roles of sister. She was sister to Balraj Sahni, Motilal, Shyam and even younger sister to K L Saigal in the film Parwana-1947. During the shooting of Nayi maa, director Vijay Bhatt had given her the name Shyama, as already there was a singing star Khursheed in films. Her first film as a Heroine was Shrimati ji-1952 opposite Nasir Khan-Dilip kumar’s younger brother. He had just started his second innings in Indian films after an unsuccessful attempt in Lahore to make a Hero’s career there. He had to run away from Lahore overnight, with only clothes he was wearing, after goons were after him to kill him because of his affair with a married woman there.

Shrimatiji was a hit film and in one day she signed 18 films. In her 45 years’ career, she worked in 6 Punjabi and 168 Hindi films. She was the Heroine in 70 of these movies. She acted opposite almost all major actors like Balraj Sahani, Dev Anand, Raj kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Ashok Kumar, Motilal, Bharat Bhushan, Shekhar,Johnny Walker etc. She did Vamp’s and negative roles as well. She also did a male role in Swarn Sundari. In Kaala Aadmi she did a double role. She had a love marriage with cinematographer Fali Mistry, a Paarsee, in 1953,when she was just 18 year old.

She invested her money wisely in construction business and today she lives a contented life with 2 sons and a daughter in a Luxurious flat in uptown Napean Sea Road, Mumbai.

Film Darwaza was also the Debut film for singer Suman Kalyanpur. The composer was Nashaad, who was bathing in the glory of his hit musical Naghma-53. The film cast was Shyama, Shekhar, Kumkum, Manju, Nazir Hussain, Neelam etc. There were 8 songs. Today’s song is the 3rd song to be posted here. The story of the film was-

Rashid( Shekhar), is a middle – class Muslim young man, just back from England after a long educational sojourn, whose father, MIRZA SAHEB (Nazir Hussain), finds himself as a poet but – being a poor indifferent versifier finds no appreciation least of all from his wife who is impervious to the beauties of her husband’s muse.

In the neighbourhood live a poor, pious old woman. SAIDANIBEE( Amir Bano) and her beautuful young daughter, ZUBEIDA ( Shyama) with whom Rashid used to play when they were children. On his return Rashid makes an effort to resume this thread of friendship and, seeing that Zubeida carries bare wrists, tries to present her with a set of glass bangles, but discovers to his horror and dismay that she may not wear them because She is a widow, having been married and widowed during Rashid’s absence. From the lonely, sequestered life she now leads, he gleans that society has slammed the door of life in her face and that she must for the rest of her life continue to go without the love affection, company and happiness which the enlightened Rashid considers every girl’s birth right.

Zubeida is practically a family member in Rashid’s house and helps his mother in her various domestic duties. She also ministers to Rashid’s personal needs. Rashid has a younger sister, Suraiya( Manju), whom her parents wish to give away in marriage to Jhumman(Altaf), a dissolute young man who acquiesces in the arrangement only because on it depends his inheriting the huge fortune of his mother. Rashid fights this match tooth and nail and makes an enemy of Jhumman who puts up the whole Mohalla against Rashid and Zubeida by spreading false, poisonous rumours. Normal life thus becomes impossible for the widow and her daughter and they are compelled to put an end to her life but a last-minute dash by Rashid knocks over the cup of poison she has prepared for herself and she is rescued out of a horrible fate. Rashid, mean while has succeeded in his right to save his sister from the clutches of Jhummna and has got her married secretly to a young, noble hearted but impecunious friend of his Ahmed (Jagdish kanwal). In desperation, Jhumman sets in motion a series for events whose ultimate effect, however, far from serving his ends, is ruinous to him and he finds himself in Police lock up, ushering in happy endings for all concerned.

Let us enjoy this duet from this film..

Arun-ji,
I had heard a trivia, which may not be a true story, but being humorous and without any malice to anyone, I think, it is worth telling. It is about the song ‘Tujhe kya sunaaun’.
Sajjad-ji being a hot tempered person, angrily accused Madan-ji of copying his tune from ‘sangdil. Madan-ji, very diplomatically replied “Maine koi aire-gaire sangeetkar ki copy nahi ki hai, aur khush hun ki maine to sabse mahan sangeetkar ki copy ki hai”

Bharat ji,

I believe, this has actually happened so.
The music Directors’ Association used to hold meetings in every composer’s house, turn by turn. Once when such a meeting was held in C.Ramchandra’s house,Sajjad Husain, who was angry on
Madan Mohan said in a loud voice,’ aaj kal to log hamare saaye ki bhi nakal utarte hain.’ madan mohan humbly and politely said,’ Yes,but i am proud that i have copied a song from the greatest music director of today.’.
