Suraiyya is one singer whose songs are now almost fully covered in the blog and we have the full, accurate and verified list of her songs. There are now less than twenty Suraiyya songs that remain to be discussed. The encouraging fact is that around four or five of these songs are available as of now. Yesterday nahm discussed one song which I was unable to locate till now. Today I am discussing another as yet unavailble Suraiyya song.

This song is from “Shaan”(1950) and this song was made available to me by Mahesh Mamadapur. I am extremely thankful to him.

This song is sung by Suraiyya and chorus. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hansraj Bahl.

With the details of all Suraiyya song available, we can now put them into statistics. In my earlier writeup on the occasion of Suraiyya’s 300th post in the blog, I had given a yearwise account of Suraiyya’s song and I had also given the list of Suraiyya songs yet to be discussed. Here I give a music directorwise list of Suraiyya’s songs in a tabular form.

The table makes for an interesting reading. It shows that Naushad (11 movies-51 songs) and Husnlal Bhagatram (9 movies-57 songs) have composed one third of all Suraiyya songs (108 songs). Then there are Anil Biswas, Hansraj Bahl, Ghulam Mohammad (5 movies each), Khursheed Anwar, S D Burman (three movies each), Ghulam Haider, C Ramchandra, Lal Muhammad, Sajjad Hussain and Shyam Sundar (2 movies each) who have composed music for 125 Suraiyya songs. The remaining music directors (17 or so) have worked in one movie each with Suraiyya and they have composed music for the remaining Suraiyya songs.

Note: “Amar Kahaani”(1949) with Husnlal Bhagatram’s music had nine songs in it including six Suraiyya songs. The same movie was re -released in 1955 under the title ‘Kanchan”(1955) by the same producer (Ranjeet Singh) for the same Production Kamal Kunj with the same nine songs (including 6 Suraiyya songs). Suraiyya and other actors of “Amar Kahaani”(1949) did not have to act afresh nor did Suraiyya and other playback singers have to sing their songs afresh. So in effect the Suraiyya songs of “Amar Kahaani” and “”Kanchan” are the same songs. To put it differently, “Kanchan”(1955) was the same old wine in the same old bottle, with just the label changed from “Amar Kahaani” to “Kanchan”. So it is incorrect to count the same songs twice, so I have counted them only once. That is why I have not mentioned the name of “Kanchan”(1955) in the list of movies of Husnlal Bhagatram since that movie has already found mention as “Amar Kahaani”.
