We in this blog often discuss songs on the occasion of anniversaries of people associated with movies. On some occasions, we celebrate occasions like festivals, anniversaries of important people, independence days, republic days etc.

While searching for the songs of “Humaayun” (1945), I found a song where birthday of Humaayun’s son was being celebrated. This son would later go on to become emperor Akbar. I wondered if the date of birth of Akbar was known. I searched and found that it was indeed known. Emperor Akbar was born on 14 october 1542 in Umerkot (now in Pakistan) where Humaayun and his wife had taken refuge after losing his empire after his defeat at the hands of Shershah Suri.

The fate of the newborn was uncertain at that time, but now, with the benefit of hindsight, we know that he was to become the greatest Mughal emperor. The struggles of his earlier days make for fascinating reading, because his father Humaayun managed to annex his lost empire (only after the fortuitous death of Shershah Suri in Kalinjar in an accidental explosive blast) only to die soon when Akbar was just a minor. He survived those uncertain times unscathed and with time began to consolidate his empire. Hindi movie makers have made movies on his ancestors (Baabar, Humaayun) and his descendents (Jahaangeer, Shahjahaan etc) but not on emperor Akbar himself, except perhaps Jodha Akbar. Most historical movies show Akbar playing “character” roles, as in “Anarkali” (1953), “Mughal e Azam” (1960), instead of playing the main role.

Well, it is an interesting situation for us in the blog, where we celebrate emperor Akbar’s 472nd birth anniversary with a happy birthday song specially meant for this very occasion in “Humaayun” (1945).

Shamshad Begam is the singer. Pt Madhur is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Haider.

With this song, “Humaayun” (1945) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Waah Atul ji, waah!
What an stretch of imagination! Going deep into the unfathomable depths of the ocean of HFM to find a rare pearl for posting the song heralding the birth of ‘Akbar The Great’ from the film about his father.
Take a bow!
Warm regards,
Avadh Lal
