Today, we celebrate the 400th milestone of that unique voice – the voice of Shamshad Begum.

In 1948, when Ram Ganguly recorded what was to become her first iconic hit song – “Kaahe Koyal Shor Machaaye Re”(‘Aag’, 1948), people were somewhat familiar with this voice that had its own distinctive individuality since she had made a debut in Hindi films, seven years earlier with “Saawan Ke Nazaare Hain” under the music direction of Ghulam Haider Sb for the film ‘Khazaanchi’ (1941). The song from the film ‘Aag’ heralded the eventual institution of her place in the industry a one of the top lady singers.

But not many were aware, then or now, that she had already been in the recording studio, for Punjabi films since 1938. And more, she had already been recording Punjabi non film songs since 1931. 1931?? Wow, an you may ask how old she was then. Well, born in 1919, she was all of thirteen years when first stepped up to a recording microphone. And mind you, she had had no formal training in music or singing, none whatsoever. As per her own words, the gramophone in the family was her only teacher. She would listen to the songs that her father played on it. And then she would attempt to reproduce the song she had heard, in her own voice.

Ghulam Haider Sb, a close family friend, once chanced to hear her imitate the gramophone sounds, during one of his visits to their household. Ghulam Haider Sb was at that time employed with Jino-Phone recording company in Lahore. He took her to the recording studio where he worked, and recorded a Punjabi song with her – “Haath Jodaa Pankhiyaan Daa”. It was 1931, she was thirteen years, and the recorded Punjabi song became a hit with the listeners. That started a regular contract for her, and over the next few years, she continuously recorded many songs (numbers unspecified). She recorded some duets with Umrao Zia Begum, the wife of Ghulam Haider Sb, which are still remembered by the aficionados of old Punjabi music.

It was 1938-39. Pancholi Art Films was becoming a big name in Punjabi films in north India. Dalsukh M Pancholi, the man behind the production company, planned the now famous (and also extremely rare, possibly unavailable) film ‘Yamla Jatt’, in which Pran made his debut on the silver screen. Searching for a new singing voice for his film, Pancholi was suggested the name of young Shamshad, by the recording company. And that is how she stepped into the playback singing world of the film industry. Her first film, ‘Yamla Jatt’ and the second one, ‘Chaudhry’, made it good on the box office. And a major part of the success was because of the music and songs.

Came 1941, and Pancholi released his first Hindi film – ‘Khazaanchi’. The rest, as they say, is simply history.

Shamshad Begum’s voice is different. There is no way to naturally imitate her. The voice has a heavy and thick gruff sound, almost akin to male voice, and at the same time, it is has a sharp nasal twang riding that gruffness, that makes it so very unique and distinctive. And the icing on the cake is a chiming tinkle in the voice, that is simply – well just Shamshad. None else.

Is it to be believed that this was an untrained voice? Wow. With that untrained voice, she captivated the minds and the interest of listeners, consistently for four decades. If it was “Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon” (‘Patanga’) and “Chandni Aayi Ban Ke Pyaar O Saajna” (‘Dulari’) in 1949, it was “Milte Hi Aankhen Dil Hua Deewaana Kisi Ka” (‘Baabul’) in 1950. If in 1951, she held listeners in awe with “Ek Do Teen Aa Ja Mausam Ha Rangeen” (‘Aawaara’), it was “Door Koi Gaaye Sun Ye Sunaaye” (‘Baiju Baawra’) in 1952 that captured their interest. If she sang the unfogettable “Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar Laaga Teer e Nazar” (‘Aar Paar’) in 1954, she seeped into the memories with “Le Ke Pehla Pehla Pyaar”(‘CID’) in 1956. If in 1957 it was “Reshmi Salwaar Kurta Jaali Da” (‘Naya Daur’), then it was “Pyar Jataa Ke Lalchaaye Mora Baalma” (‘Hum Bhi Insaan Hain’) in 1959. If she sought attention with “Sharma Ke Ye Kyun Sab Pardabnasheen” (‘Chaudhvin Ka Chaand’) and “Teri Mehfil Mein Qismat Aazma Kar Hum Bhi Dekhenge” (‘Mughal e Azam’) in 1960, then it was “O Chali Chali Kaisi Hawaa Ye Chali” (‘Bluff Master’) in 1963. If the listener’s regaled with “Jaate Jaate Ik Nazar Bhar Dekh Lo” (‘Qawwaali ki Raat’) in 1964, then the treat listeners got in 1968 was “Kajra Mohabbat Waala Akhiyon Mein Aisa Daala” (‘Kismet’) in 1968.

Today’s post carries a gem of a song from the 1960 film ‘Bahaana’. The song is written by Rajinder Krishan and the melody is composed by Madan Mohan. ‘Bahaana’ is a film from the banner Silver Films, Bombay and is directed by M Kumar. The star cast of the film includes Sajjan, Meena Kumari, Sheila Vaz, Helen, Kumar, Krishna Kumari, Anwar, Mehmood, Nisar, Sulochana etc. A very entertaining song, that tells of willful defiance in the pursuit of one’s object of love. “Adosan Padosan Kahe jo Kahe” – let the people of the world say whatever they may, I have been to see my paramour and that is that. A fun song that is rendered so gleefully by this unique voice. Listen and enjoy.

Just one small point. “Mere piya gaye Rangoon” is from film Patanga (1949) and not from Shehnai.
