Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Reshmi salwaar kurta jaali kaa

Posted on: April 7, 2012

Here is one more song of the popular unofficial genre viz “how come this song was not posted earlier” 🙂 . During my younger days I was only into listening current songs and any song created before 1968 was old song for me. then one fine day in mid 1970s I decided to become mature, viz. become interested in old songs. It was then that I learnt about O P Nayyar. The fact that he made his career without using the voice of Lata voice impressed me a lot. Then I heard O P Nayyar compositions from movies like “CID”(1956), “Naya Daur”(1957) etc.

I was aware of all “Naya Daur” songs by mid 1970s including the song under discussion. In fact, I thought that a song as well known as this was already discussed in the blog. I was wrong of course, but thankfully not any longer. As many as six songs from this movie have been discussed in the blog in the past. With this seventh song, we hopefully do not have too many songs left from this movie to be discussed.

This song is a stage song where Minu Mumtaz dressed in male arrire teases Kumkum. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Shamshad Begam. Though I have heard this song many times, it is only now that I am paying attention to the picturisation of the song. And it is only now that I have come to realise that Minu Mumtaz and Kumkum figure in this movie ! I have watched this movie on the big screen in 1980s, but I suppose my ability to pay attention while watching movies was lost by that time.

Here is this timeless classic song from “Naya Daur” (1957). The lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm.

Song-Reshmi salwaar kurta jaali ka (Naya Daur)(1957) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics(Provided by nahm)

reshmi salwaar kurdtaa jaali ka
roop sahaa nahin jaaye nakhre waali ka
hoy
reshmi salwaar kurdtaa jaali ka
roop sahaa nahin jaaye nakhre waali ka
hoy
jaa re peechha chhod mujh matwaali ka
kaahe dhoonde raasta kotwaali ka
jaa re peechha chhod mujh matwaali ka
kaahe dhoonde raasta kotwaali ka

jab jab tujh ko dekhoon
mere dil mein chhute phuljhadiyaan
karoonga teraa peechha
chaahe lag jaayen hathkadiyaan
arey
karoonga teraa peechha
chaahe lag jaayen hathkadiyaan
kyaa hai kotwaali kaa
roop sahaa nahin jaaye nakhre waali ka
hoy
jaa re peechha chhod mujh matwaali ka
kaahe dhoonde raasta kotwaali ka

main hoon izzat waali
mujhe samajh naa aisi waisi
bade badon ki main ne
kar di aisi taisi
bade badon ki main ne
kar di aisi taisi
tu hai kis thhaali ka
kaahe dhoonde raasta kotwaali ka

reshmi salwaar kurdtaa jaali ka
roop sahaa nahin jaaye nakhre waali ka
haay

Thanks for identifing these two lovely ladies.
This film brings the message from Mahatma Gandhi (he wrote in 1919) to give the preference to cottage industry…so India missed the whole Industrial revolution of 1920.
I know it by heart because I wrote an essay in (1967) on this subject…with pro/con…and still today…I compare everyday in my mind
.
True hero was OPN for this movie…won best award for his music.
