Remembering Uma Devi, on her death anniversary (11 July 1923 – 24 November 2003).
The song is from the film ‘Raj Mahal’ (1953) under the music direction of Pt. Gobind Ram. The lyrics written by Munshi Dil. The movie comes from the production house of Shah Pictures was directed by Nanubhai Vakil. The cast of actors is Shakeela, Trilok Kapoor, Ram Singh, Noorjahan, Murad, Mishra, Bhupendra Kapoor, Gulab, Ansari, Sadiq, Sarla, S Nazeer, Mohini, Uma Devi, Baby Chand, Wazir Muhammad Khan. This film makes a debut on this blog today.
Having acted in nearly 200 movies, invariably in a comic role, she has earlier sang many songs in late forties. S.S. Vasan’s “Chandralekha” (1948) made by Gemini Studios, Madras, had seven songs sung by her. However, singing for this film meant a breach of her contract with producer-director AR Kardar and her quick downfall as a singer. The emergence of Lata and Asha was also a factor for her to stop singing and take up the role of a very successful comedian on the advice of Naushad, her mentor in singing.
Apart from acting, her songs are a treasure and a pleasure to listen to.
