Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 11
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Simply the mention of the song “Main To Aarti Utaaroon Re” is a sure giveaway. 🙂 Yes, we celebrate today, the birth anniversary of Usha Mangeshkar.
Greetings Usha ji, on the anniversary of your birth today. May there be many many more happy returns of this day.
A quiet and unassuming person, who prefers to stay away from limelight. For a person contented with having sung way more duets and group songs than solos, the runaway success of the above listed song would have taken her also by surprise. The time was, in 1975, when the devout would leave their footwear outside the cinema theatres, and bring offerings of money and other things, to the show. This aarti song achieved such rare popularity, that it continues to be played even today, almost four decades later. For that matter, wherever religious programs are being conducted and if songs from films are being played, one be sure to hear Usha ji’s voice in the selection.
Youngest of the five illustrious siblings of the Mangeshkar family, Usha ji has had a fairly prolific career in both Hindi and Marathi cinema. In Hindi films alone, she has clocked in no less than 600 songs in an active career of about five and a half decades. Her career in Hindi films starts with the 1954 film ‘Subah Ka Tara’, in which she sang the endearing song “Bhaabhi Aaa. . . yee”. And then in 1955 she joined her elder sister Lata ji in “Aplam Chaplam”, the famous duet from film ‘Azaad’. Her later songs of wonder include the famous Helen dance from the 1977 film ‘Inkaar’ – “Mungdaa Mungdaa Main Gud Ki Dali” and “Sultaana Sultaana Mera Naam Hai Sultaana” from the 1979 film ‘Taraana’. She rendered again the ‘Santoshi Mata’ songs in the remake of the film in 2006.
For the celebration today, I present this wonderful melody from the film ‘Sakhi Robin’. A song that is very much alive in the memory from the radio listening days.
‘Sakhi Robin’ is a film from 1962, produced under the banner of People Pictures and directed by BJ Patel. The word ‘Sakhi’ (with an extra emphasis on the ‘kh’ sound) is actually an Urdu word with the meaning generous, helpful, beneficent. The cast of actors is Ranjan, Shalini Chonkar, Rajan Kapoor, Nilofer, Babu Raje, Vishwa Mehra, Shri Bhagwan, Dalpat, Habeen, Shyam, etc.
The six songs in this film are written by Yogesh (aka Yogesh Gaud). Three wonderful melodies from this film are already posted here. This is the fourth song from this film – song that is going to steal your heart away. A very wonderfully crafted song. Matching the rhythm of a moving bullock cart, being driven by Shalini Chonkar, a song of simple joys of the heart. We also see Ranjan, in the Robin Hood outfit, complete with the feathered cap, hiding the haystack that the lady is ferrying in the cart.
A word about the singer. Geet Kosh lists the name of the singer as Suman Kalyanpur, but on listening to the song, the voice is very clearly that of Usha Mangeshkar. It is possible that the record version and the sound track version are in different voices. (Needs to be confirmed).
Once again, greetings to Usha ji for good health, and many more musical milestones. Listen to this wonderful sound of joy; I am sure you will want to replay it and listen again. Enjoy.

Song-Arr Rrr Rrr Paayal Mori Chhanke Ho (Sakhi Robin) (1962) Singer – Usha Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Yogesh, MD – Robin Bannerjee
Lyrics
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho. . .
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho
bairan ho gayi
duniya saari
raah chaloon main
tham ke tham ke
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho. . .
naya naya sa hai ye safar
badi kathin hai yahaan ki dagar
main ghabraaun
keh nahin paaun
baat mere mann ki ri
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho
bairan ho gayi duniya saari
raah chaloon mein tham ke tham ke
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho. . .
dhadak rahaa hai dil aur jigar
kisi ko ho naa jaaye khabar
maaane na kehnaa
bairi kangnaa
ghadi ghadi chhanke ji
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho
bairan ho gayi
duniya saari
raah chaloon main
tham ke tham ke
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho. . .
badaa rangeela hai ye nagar
yahaan pe kaise hogi guzar
dekhe duniya
phir bhi bindiya
chandaa jaisi chamke ji
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho
bairan ho gayi
duniya saari
raah chaloon main
tham ke tham ke
arrr rrr rrr paayal mori chhanke ho. . .
