VINTAGE NAUSHAD…….Song No. 1
————————————-
NAUSHAD may be or may not be the best Composer the HFM ever had, but he certainly was a good example of Rags to Riches story of Filmy Duniya. He rose from the footpath and became one of the most successful composers ever in Hindi Films. Added to this was his good nature, Lucknowi Tahzib and hard work. This made him a man with least enemies ( competitors-yes but no enemies ) and on whose name alone films were sold during his peak period.
Naushad was the only composer on whom 6 Documentaries were made. A student Ms.Mala Sinha secured her Ph.D., making Naushad as a subject of her research.
Starting with Rs.40 a month, Naushad was the First to demand and get Rs.ONE LAKH per film and was also the first composer to build his own Bungalow in a posh locality of Bombay with a Music room for doing rehearsals.
When he was on the Top, a trailer of film “Dastaan”-1950 featured Naushad on the screen showing crowds shouting ” 40 karod mein ek hi Naushad “. Such was his saleability that A R Kardar, who had always used Naushad for his own gains, was forced to make Naushad his partner in producing films under their banner ” Musical Pictures .
Naushad was undoubtedly the most successful composer HFM ever had. Out of the 65 films that he did in Hindi, 50% had celebrated jubilees. This is a record unmatched so far. His tally was 3 Diamond Jubilees ( Rattan, Baiju Bawra and Mughal-e-Azam ), 6 Golden Jubilees ( Mela, Andaz, Deedar, Aan, Mother India and Gunga Jamuna ) and 23 Silver Jubilees (Station master, Sharda, Namaste, Sanjog, Pehle aap, Kanoon, Keemat, Sanyasi, Anmol Ghadi, Shahjehan, Natak, Dard, Anokhi Ada, Dillagi, Dulari, Babul, Dastaan, Jadoo, Diwana, Udan Khatola, Kohinoor, Mere Mehboob and Ram aur Shyam ).
Naushad was the First winner of Filmfare Award in 1954 for a song in Baiju Bawra. The Award Ceremony was held in Broadway Theatre, Bombay. Ironically, this was bang opposite this Theatre that Naushad had spent his struggling days and Nights on the Footpath ! Naushad recieved several cherished Awards like Dadasaheb Phalke Award,Padma Bhushan, Lata Mangeshkar award, Maharashtra Bhooshan award, Sahitya and Natak Academy award, Saraswati Award, the IFJ and BFJ awards and scores of other awards.
More than his 65 Hindi films in a span of 65 years of HFM, his contribution towards making classical music popular among the masses and regaling the common man with his ever melodious tunes stands out.
Naushad’s achievements are great, but his career beginning was not spectacular in any way. His initial foray into HFM as assistant to several MDs resulted in flops, like Sunehari makdi-37, Industrial India-38, Pati Patni-39, Ghazi Salahuddin-39, Meri Aankhen-39. All films were flops, creating a big question mark on his future. However, the then famous and inflential Lyricist D N Madhok’s keen eyes spotted the musically accomplished Naushad and Madhok recommended him to Mohan Bhavnani for his film ” Premnagar-40″, at Rs.150 per month salary. Thus started the journey of a Genius composer whose 32 films out of his first 49 films celebrated jubilees in a span of 25 years from 1942 to 1967.
His first 4 films, however were with unimpressive music. From the film Sharda-42, his Luck started changing and then there was no looking back at all for the next 25 successive years. This is exceptional talent and unbelievable Luck. I see 2 reasons which made him successful. One was his hard work. He never ever compromised on rehearsals and however big the singer was (read Lata) he/she had to come to his Music room for rehearsals on a song for at least 7 to 8 days. He never recorded a song unless he was satisfied fully. Secondly, Naushad had tremendous faith and liking for Indian Classical music, which he used extensively in his songs. Almost all his songs had a classical base and he proved that classical music can be made entertaining for the masses, who could not make a difference between 2 Ragas, but would like his simple and hummable tunes. Very rarely his songs were difficult to hum or sing in the bathroom. He always selected singers based on their suitability for the songs.
Naushad was born in 1919- that was 95 years ago. In his honour, I am presenting a New Series VINTAGE NAUSHAD. In this series, we shall listen to his early film songs (1940-1946), to get a feel of his early promise of extraordinary talent, which was to give us the best of the Golden Age of HFM. The first song selected today is naturally from his First film ” Premnagar-40 “.
It is sung by Prof. Pt. Ramanand and Husn Bano-the lead pair of the film. The lyricist was D N Madhok and it was produced and directed by Mohan Bhavnani for his own Bhavnani Productions. There were in all 13 songs in the film. Bimla Kumari, who was the second lead of the film had also sung some songs. Bimla Kumari is yet another ‘ Same name confusion” artiste. At a time, there were several Bimla Kumaris operated adding to the confusion and making it very difficult to tell who did what. The one who acted in this film was the Senior one. She had also acted in Double cross-38, Baghbaan-38 and Zambo ki beti-39.
The Bimla kumari junior was active from end of 40s to 62. She is the one who lip snched ‘Hava mein udta jaaye’ in Barsat-49 and ‘Dheere se aaja ri nindiya’ from Albela-51. She also worked in Sunehra din-49,Sargam-50, Shrimatiji-52. Then she went to Madras and did few Tamil films as a Dancer. In Bombay she again worked in Do Ustad-59 and Sahib,Bibi aur ghulam-62. According to Dr. Suresh Chandwankar, Hon secretary SIRC, even Lahore’s actress/singer Zeenat Begaum sang a few songs as Bimla Kumari.
The Hero of Premnagar (1940) was Prof. Pt. Ramanand Sharma. If you are a regular listener of Radio early in the mornings, you would have heard many Bhajans sung by Sharma Brothers of Shriam Darbar. These 4 Sharmas-Gopal, Sukhdev, Kaushalendra and Raghavendra are the sons of this Ramanand Sharma. These Sharma brothers have sung the famous Bhajan ” Sooraj ki Garmi se ” from the film Parinay-72. Ramanand was the singing Hero of many early talkie films like Noor-e-islam or Aurat ka dil-1934 and Himalay ki beti-1938. he also sang many songs in other films.
After his work in “Premnagar-40″, R C Boral of the New Theatres,Calcutta came down to Bombay and took Ramanand to Calcutta to act in films. But Ramanand was fed up with the film world and decided to only sing Ram Bhajans for his Shri Ram Darbar which he had established. he went back to Muzaffarpur and used to sing Ram bhajans all over India. His 7 albums were released by HMV.
Here is a song from Naushad’s Debut film ” Premnagar-40″, which is sung by Ramanand and Husn Bano. Enjoy…
